Raiders Add CB Lito Sheppard
Multiple sources, including Jerry McDonald, are reporting that the Raiders have added CB Lito Sheppard to their ranks. The 30 year old Sheppard spent his first 7 seasons with the Eagles before 1 year stints with the Jets and Vikings. Sheppard struggled with the Vikings last year but brings veteran experience to a very young DB corp. With Chris Johnson out after having surgery and rooking CB Demarcus Van Dyke missing the last two practices with an undisclosed injury, the Raiders needed to add to their DB depth.
Now if they'd only do the same thing with the LB corp.

Hardly , Lito is not at all what he used to be

What happened to him?
It’s not like 30 is that old for a CB. Did he suffer real bad injury at some point that he’s never made it back from entirely, or ???
I say no matter what this is a decent signing, provided we didn’t over-pay. We DESPERATELY needed another (preferably solid veteran) corner, and who knows … maybe the Raiders will be where he rejuvenates his career.

He has a ton of miles on him and has regressed
That’s all there is to it. He’s better than Chris Johnson, but at this point so am I.

Is he really better than CJ? Good move if he is. As long as we're improving, even incrementally, that's reason for celebration

He is not better than CJ thats ridiculous

but he gave up some catches and he got some PI’s, and other penalties.

don’t recall that many penalties, cant find that stat anywhere. I do recall him getting a td and a couple of picks which is more than I can say for cb eagles

he got burned a few times.
sure he will stop 2-5 plays, but than the CB burns him for big yards. And I do remember CJ getting some PIs.
But yeah, Lito is still not an improvement over CJ.

As do I
The most notable names, like Tatupu and Tinoisamoa, are coming off of knee surgeries and are huge health concerns. Worst case scenario the Raiders bring these guys in on Tuesday Sept. 13th, because from that date on veteran contracts are no longer guaranteed for the entire season.
Still, the LB corp is weak enough right now to bring in some UDFA or other young guys just for depth. I guess Monday is a cutdown day to 80, so maybe there will be a few more options available then.
Overall the Raiders have done an excellent job filling holes in positions of weakness (DB, OL). The only exception has been at LB and we’re seeing the results of that failure now.

Julian Peterson is the man to bring in IMO
I’d love to see him brought in right away even if it meant guaranteeing his contract

Been heavily avoiding all the drinking of the tasty KoolAid the last few days, since I have a tendency to get too hyped too early, but I really LIKE this signing, I think Sheppard’s got plenty left in the tank and gives us some MUCH needed depth.

Pretty sure he was at LEAST that old when he came to the S & B
Although his great years were behind him, he definitely still had a few good years left in him. I feel like that’s probably all we really need from Sheppard as well … A few years of solid, dependable play to close out his career.
I could see him beating out CJ for the starting job, too. CJ really ain’t that good and seems pretty injury-prone.
With this news coming out about how impressed everyone is with Taiwan, and how well Denarius Moore is coming along, and the improvements in the play of DHB … I’m starting to wonder whether or not we might actually have us an ‘elite’ caliber offense this year, one that puts up so many points that we don’t even NEED a great defense to make the playoffs (which is all I’m really hoping for this season, tbh), ala the Colts and Patriots.
by Brett J Valjalo on Aug 26, 2011 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions
partially disagree on CJ
he is injury prone but when on the field the last couple years he’s played reasonably well. accounts are that lito was horrible last year.
I like the signing for depth and experience but he won’t start.

I doubt Sheppard even makes the roster
With CJ37 and DVD nicked up, they need some warm body to fill out the CB corps for the last 2 preseason games. If Sheppard proves he’s still got something left in the tank, awesome.
Still think the final CB depth chart looks like this:
Routt
CJ37
Moore
DVD
Ware
Chekwa
Walter McFadden is going to get cut.
Kamerion Wimbley is the truth
hasn't cc been playing safety?
if lito doesn’t break down, he’ll be on the roster and probably playing plenty

Stevie Brown will probably be backup FS unless Chekwa really lights it up there and I haven’t heard anything to indicate he has.

The following is a list of everything Darren McFadden is bad at: 1) Giving birth. End of list.

Q: Is Lito Sheppard signing an indication of Chris Johnson and DeMarcus Van Dyke’s injuries or you would have brought him in anyway?
Coach Jackson: I would have. I mean in my eyes we would have brought him in anyway. I mean from what we have seen is a guy that was sitting out there. As I keep saying we are going to continue to improve our football team from top to bottom. The roster is still ongoing and until we continue to turn over the rock and uncover everything that we can, we are going to look for good football players and improve our team that is all that is. I mean Lito [Sheppard] is a tremendous player and I am glad to have him.
