Week #2
The Oakland Raiders lost in an exciting heart breaker this past Sunday with a 35-38 loss to the Buffalo Bills. It is hard to accept a lose in a game in which you throw for 323 yards and run for 131 more.
This week the offensive lineman that had the best all around performance was Khalif Barnes. He ended the day with a run assignment score of 84% with a +1 power score and a passing score of 89% and +1. Those numbers are slightly up from last week.
Let's look at those offensive line grades...

| Did the lineman get the job done or not? These grades are good for understanding value for a team and not necessarily for comparing across teams. A game in the mid 80s to 90% is a decent score. |
How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? These scores are good for comparing across teams and finding the most dominant lineman in the league. |
Anything over zero is a good score. The more over zero the more the lineman dominated the defender. Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the defender. |
The number of success over failures for the lineman when blocking linebackers and safeties on the second level. The lineman must be athletic to accomplish a high second level score. |

Run Blocking Notes:
- Offensive lineman try and have an assignment grade of 80-90 percent each game. The real good run blockers (pro bowlers) will be consistently in the 90s with some dips into the 80s and possibly one game into the high 70s. That being said, Veldheer's 65% run assignment grade is not very good. He often had defenders getting off his blocks and making plays or causing problems. That is a big change from last weeks 86% score.
- Khalif Barnes is the most consistent run blocker for the Raiders over the first two games.
- One of Samson Satele's issues in the running game is holding his block after he has engaged the defender. 3:20 left in the 1st quarter is a good example of this.
- On the scoring run at 11:35 in the 2nd quarter Joseph Barksdale gets a good push on the defender. Nice!
- Samson Satele gets a nice screen block at 2:11 in the 2nd.
- I love seeing those great offensive line surges. Oakland has a really good push on short yardage at1:22 in the 2nd quarter to put the Raiders up 20-3.
- In the 4th quarter Veldeer and Carlisle just fell apart in the run blocking game. Especially Carlisle. He had been doing really well...then...he misses 3 of 4 blocks.

How often did the offensive lineman dominate the block or how often did he get dominated? Each lineman is scored a minus for being dominated, a zero for a draw, or a plus for dominating the block. | How often did the offensive lineman give up pressure on the quarterback? Every once and a while a lineman can do his job but give up pressure on the QB. This stat will help glean more info from the line grades. |
How often did the offensive coordinator provide help for a tough defender or a struggling lineman. Yea, two lineman ended up with the same grade...but how much help did either of them get? |

Pass Blocking Notes:
- On the first play of the game the offensive line give the quarterback almost 6 seconds to throw the ball.
- The Raiders really do a lot of play action, slide protection, and other tactics to slow the pass rush and catch any aggressive safeties.
- At 10:20 in the 1st quarter Jared Veldeer attempts to cut a pass rusher for a quick pass. Unfortunately he doesn't get enough of him to get his hands down.
- Khalif Barnes ends the game with some nice pass blocking. Nice to see a player kick it in when the game is on the line.
