Oakland Raiders Kickoff Returns About to be Made in Taiwan

All signs point to the Oakland Raiders making a change at the kickoff returner position. According to Steve Corkran, Taiwan Jones returned all kicks at Thurday's practice. Seems like a great move to me. Jacoby Ford will likely miss his second straight game, and Nick Miller was awful on kick returns vs. the Bills.

I was actually shocked how bad Miller was against the Bills. I think anyone of us could have gotten as many yards as Miller on returns last Sunday, and probably more is we could've avoided slipping.

All reports indicate Jones was fielding all kicks clean and smooth. He certainly has the explosion to succeed. Every time he touches the ball he creates the feeling like he is on the verge of eating up huge chunks of yardage in a breathtakingly short amount of time.

Jones should get a chance to show what he can do. The Jets have had eight kicks returned against them. Nick Folk does not have the leg to boot it out of the endzone. They are very good in kick coverage though. The Jets have the fourth lowest return average in the league at 16.8.

The only teams better are the Bucs, who have only allowed two kickoff returns, and the Raiders and Broncos, who have yet to have a single kick returned against them.

To help get us excited for Jones, here are his highlights from the Saints game:

Finally

You don’t need to be a coach to know this.. should have been done in training camp.

True. The only excuse for Typhoon not being the punt and (w/Jacoby out) kickoff returner is his preseason injury

Well that and he'd be a fumble risk.

It takes a special breed to be a punt returner. Few running backs have mastered the craft.

This should be the end of miller

as soon as Ford or Murphy is back he should be gone.Moore on punts and Jones on kicks.

Probably most likely to be cut when TP is activated at this point

i could have done better than miller returning kicks

i would have let the ball go every time, got us to the 20 on every kick off, thats 5 yards further than millers average.

by RyanTheRaider on Sep 22, 2011 2:51 PM PDT reply actions

I liked his giving up the fair catch on the one punt and letting it bounce when he was at what, the 25? so the ball bounced and the bills got to down it at the 1. .

That play was against Denver and it pissed me off

I wanted him cut RIGHT THEN before the next game. But he kept his job and gave us another horrible performance. Watching him slip in Buffalo on that one return … oh lord

Thank you to whoever made this change

I’m not a fan of Nick Miller. Never have been, never will be. It’s strange because all through preseason everyone (Not including myself) was all for him and talked about how reliable he was. Now, after the heartbreaking Bills game, everybody wants him out. Well I say “About damn time!” I’m glad to hear Taiwan is taking over while Ford is out. This kid is a playmaker and we need him on the field. It’s hard to get him time at RB with DMC and Bush. Returning kicks is exactly where we need him for now.

Happy about this

Miller was absolutey horrid last week and this is a great way to get Taiwan involved in the game.

He did great in the denver game, but man did he ever just fall apart against the bills. Most of the defense did though, so maybe it was just a very bad defensive vibe being given off and that’ll be gone… I hope.

I don't think we have anything to worry about

oh come on now

It was a joke. It’s called hyperbole.

I just don’t like the new kickoff rule very much, it makes kickoffs pretty boring. The best part of the rule is that nobody can return a kickoff against the Raiders, Jano has too big of a leg. They have to go eighty yards every single time.

Taiwan Jones needs to start some where.

KR was definitely a weakness with Nick Miller on the field. He wasn’t getting it done. T. Jones is a young star waiting to happen. Unfortunately, he’s currently behind McFadden and Bush. Therefore, he should definitely get KR duties. The Raiders need to get the ball into the hands of their exciting players. Some are worried if he’d get hurt on KR?! He needs to get game experience. That’s more important.
I’m hoping D. Moore will return punts. He was just as exciting on PR during the pre-season.

yep, I too have heard of this news in which you speak of.

I don’t think it would take a lot. He’s been a huge bust, and the Hawks clearly don’t value him. I’d be all for grabbing him. He’s busted on rushing the passer, but he has been decent vs. the run. I have no idea about his coverage.

Yeah I have seen heaps of him

But from what I have I always thought he was solid in coverage. His tackle and sack stats are pretty good from his first two years. I still think they will want something pretty decent back and you would think he would be a guy that a few teams would be interested in.

perhaps this is passive aggressive of me but

I hate the blame game shit that Kelly was talking after that “other” game last week. That attitude stinks of old raiders and I hope he learns to keep his mouth f%^&ing shut in the future. Its like he’s sayin’ “do your job, it;s what the man pays you for” how about do yours kelly, by making a f%^&ing sack and ending one of those 5 drives. That attitude really irks me, and he’s been around a long time, he should have a way better attitude than that.

by Toolshed1485 on Sep 22, 2011 7:29 PM PDT reply actions

I totally agree

Hue jack addressed that pretty comprehensively and decisively during the week in his press conferences.

I actually think Hue has been brilliant this week.

+1

I don’t think Kelly’s played well enough to be trash-talking his teammates like this. Maybe if he’d gotten 8 tackles, 2 for a loss, and 2 sacks … I’d see where he’s coming from a little bit.

And I do like how Hue’s handled the media’s questions this week as well.

T. Kelly

Kelly did have a sack and it was waived off because MaClain hit fitz in the head.

by bigmark l on Sep 22, 2011 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions

It's funny how differently we reacted to Kelly's comments. I've been enjoying all of them. Hue won't ever say a negative word

about an individual player and that’s fine and good for a head coach. But, when 19 guys are working their asses off and 2 or 3 guys are cruising, well, it is understandable that some players would be upset. I doubt Tommy will be talking to the press about his reservations but I do hope he goes to those two players privately and “shares” with them his opinion of their efforts.

I don’t like the idea of players calling each other out they should be worrying about making sure they are doing their own job addressing other positions is the coaches job.

Hard to soar with Eagles when there are turkeys in your flock. Kelly's a made man, established and tight with Al.

Plus he’s been playing well for over a season; so who else but one of the dominant DL to voice what every conscious fan already knows … our LBs are undermining us with botched assignments and execution. He didn’t mention any names but left the shoes there for the feet that fit them.

TD his first time?

he’s got that elusiveness and ability to make guys miss to where he’s uber dangerous back there, but as bad as Nick was, I didn’t see too many blockers making two or three guys miss on special teams either. Our entire units need to be better to keep him from getting killed out there.

That said, of course i cannot wait to see him get the chance and what could happen! Looking forward to the home opener in the Black Hole in a sold out O. Good times.

TJ's first KR return ... takes it to the house!

This would be freakin AWESOME. And I totally think he could do it.

My prediction is that he takes one back this week. Maybe not the first one, but one of them.

by Brett J Valjalo on Sep 23, 2011 9:46 AM PDT up reply actions

I really think Reece would be a better choice.

Being a fullback, he’s much more capable of taking hits than Moore or Jones. Having been a WR in college, he has good hands and won’t be as likely to muff a ball. He’s also by far the fastest FB in the NFL and has a habit of hurdling defenders.

by Jason Scarbrough on Sep 23, 2011 12:21 AM PDT reply actions

Reece doesn't have the wiggle required to return kicks

and as far as I know he has never done it before

T. Jones is a good choice fot Kick Off Returns...He is a weapon that shouldn't be ignored..

And fellas you have to remember guys have bad games, it happens, I don’t care how big a contract they have. I start Chris Johnson, however, I practice schemes that gives him help over the top when he has trouble playing man. It just happens but it is NO big deal when you make adjustments. The Raiders played a dumb ass defensive game last week, there was a blatant Coaching failure, had they switched to Cover 2 Man and kept getting beat like that it would have been another story. But it was inexcusable to keep playing that defense and watch it get shredded. Stupid is the word that comes to mind.

Taiwan Jones is a nice change of pace and here we go again, why not play him when the starting returner is having problems instead of letting an entire game go by.. Well, with that said, teams can prepare for Taiwan, I would never expose who is going to do what if I didn’t have too.

On Aaron Curry I believe he would be a great addition to the Raiders defense, however, they have to use him right. Seattle is hurting the kids career, with that said he would be a nice addition.

by Rodney Sacramento on Sep 23, 2011 4:58 AM PDT reply actions

I dunno ...

I’m certainly no expert, but I’d tend to think that unless you know you’re going to be kicking off to Devin Hester (back when he was absolutely tearing it up on return duties) or someone of that caliber … the KR preparations/practice probably don’t vary all that much.

I can see potentially wanting to keep who your QB is going to be ‘under wraps’ in certain situations, if you can, but I don’t feel like Hue is exactly ‘tipping his hand’ by letting it be known TJ is going to be on KR duty on Sunday.

In fact, if anything, it might be more likely to create complacency … Jets should have little reason to suspect the move on KR’s to a rookie who’s played on like 1 play in his career so far … means that they need to do some special game-planning for him.

But I have this sneaking feeling that … if they don’t … they might just be in for a big surprise come game day.

Ever since I saw TJ play in the 4th preseason game I’ve been thinking to myself that this guy’s abilities could make him an absolute STAR return man. His ability to cut on a dime, and accelerate very quickly out of the cut, should make him extremely dangerous in an open field type of situation, as is the case on returns.

Bottom-line, I sense that TJ is so shifty that I think he’s going to make people WHIFF hard in the open field.

In fact, I’m going to make a bold prediction here today … TJ takes one to the house in the Jet’s game. Maybe even the opener, if we lose the toss.

by Brett J Valjalo on Sep 23, 2011 9:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Wow, it's almost like they read this blog ...

I think I’ve lobbied for this 3 or 4 different times over the past couple of weeks … you guys remember?

This move just makes an incredible amount of sense, assuming the guy is remotely capable of performing this task.

I have to say though … I kinda expect anyone ‘new’ at this to fumble at least once in the early going of KR duties … I pray this decision doesn’t turn around and bite us in the butt in this game.

Not trying to cast doubt on my own preference, as I really think in the longer term, the move makes total sense … but it does take time to learn how to ‘do it right’. Fortunately KR duty is definitely easier than PR, and a good way to ease him into that task. PR duty is where I think Jones could be REALLY dangerous … but that takes a lot of practice to get good at. Better to ease him into return duties on kickoffs, and if he does well, maybe move him to PR after a month or so, and then we can CUT NICK MILLER.

by Brett J Valjalo on Sep 23, 2011 9:21 AM PDT reply actions

Brett I respect your point of view, with the new kicking rules it does change the game also...

Also on cutting Nick Miller, I know he was on the bubble in camp and was probably the last player to make the team, but I don’t cut Nick unless I am really adding someone. Meaning, if J-Camp throws 4 picks in a game do we cut him? Guys have off days, I know I did playing but it doesn’t mean you are a bad player. The best of the best have off days is what I am saying. So lets see how things go, Nick more than anyone else knows he has to step his game up that’s for sure.

Jones returned plenty kicks in college and he’s a running back he knows how to hold the ball. I expect him NOT to fumble..though things happen…I am with you on this Brett now lets go beat the Jets! Go Raiders!!!

by Rodney Sacramento on Sep 23, 2011 3:07 PM PDT reply actions

I would have saved Sheppard & cut Miller.

We need as much CB experience as possible right now.
