Oakland Raider Free Agent Signing Thread 9-4-11:

With all of the action well under way, I figure that we should use this thread to keep up with all of the signings.

So far, Brian Waters is a Patriot, Adibi is a Viking, Diles is a Buc, Meariweather is a Bear, Tolzien is a Niner and there are many more to be announced over the coming 24 hours including who will be on the Oakland Raider practice squad and who will fill the obvious holes at LB, FS and OG.

I use KFFL on days like these because they do a great job at getting the stories from may sources and confirming them before they publish them.

Here is my preferred link: LINK

It is looking more and more like Tatupu and, maybe, Langston Wallker will be the chosen few, because all of the names that I was keen on are falling by the side of the road as teams like the Pats and Vikings get even better.

Cheers!

Isn't that the second time Maybin has been cut this offseason?

I still think you could be worth a shot though for a minimum salary. Can’t be too much worse than Groves

Talent wise were worse? How so

We loose aso miller and gallery grant it those were 3 of our most talented players but we add tawain, d Moore, d hagan, DVD, ausberry barksdale and wiz I would call that an upgrade

by 209raider on Sep 4, 2011 1:23 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Losing Zach Miller hurts pretty badly.

I think the offensive line will be just fine without Robert Gallery. I think the pass defense can still be top 10 without Nnamdi Asomugha.

Taiwan Jones and David Ausberry figure to be non-factors this season. Joe Barksdale might also be a non-factor. DeMarcus Van Dyke hasn’t looked good. We’ll see just how good Denarius Moore and Stefen Wisniewski are.

Derek Hagan has played well enough to earn a starting job, and Kevin Boss should be a decent target and a great run blocker.

Overall, talent-wise, we’ll just have to see how the season plays out.

Jones is only seeing the field if McFadden gets hurt and misses a game or two.

Even if McFadden does, Jones won’t be utilized as much as McFadden. Bush becomes the feature back.

I can see jones used as a 3rd down back.

he’s too talented NOT to be used. In fact, having him and mcfadden swap out every so often (bush gets swapped out every so often too) it can lead to a better chance of mcfadden NOT injuring himself.

Im implying that the 65% completion percentage can be skewed because of his throws to mostly slants and underneath passes and screens. Even Ohio State fans don’t really care about him and his play.

By college standards

This is just my take:

to me, he is okay. Tim Tebow was getting the same hype pretty much coming out of college. Actually, it was much much more hype. If Pryor went into the draft next year, and gives off the same performance as last year, ALL of the questions that Tebow got would be relayed right into pryor. The question of being a passer, would be a front-runner i’m assuming.

By college standards, Tebow was much more better than pryor is. I even knew Tebow was an okay passer in college though, as his system pretty much was saving him. Pryor does not run in an nfl like system. They had to design the offense for pryor, and that included short passes, and passes out of the pocket.

Looking at his highlight videos, I saw many underneath passes. I saw many running. I saw a few mid-deep passes. But his delivery is sketchy, and his ability to read defenses is in great question because its probably a frequent reason why he rolls out all the time, to draw the coverage near him, and having a WR break his route to go for him.

Right now, I am not confident in saying that Pryor was good at passing. He was okay by college standards.

it wasn't really pro style.... at least that's not what it looked like to me.

Idk. In any case, his ability to pass is still in question. You can pass really well in college, like Tebow, but ultimately that remains to be seen how that translates into the nfl. And I don’t think he was that great of a passer in Ohio State, but I guess we can agree to disagree on that, and agree on the fact that he’ll need a lot of work to compete in the nfl.

Every "QB" Prospect Is Graded On His Colleg Performance!!!

So being a good college passer means exactly what???…There are NO good pro passers coming out of the college ranks until they establish themselves as such in the pros!!!..

He’s a 3rd rd pick with tremendous upside and talent from the lower level…That’s how it stands until something more or less is shown at the pro level over time…Just like Cam n Tebow n the rest…

i agree O St fans hate him now but he was one of their most beloved players before the mess he made

They ran a number of screens and slants but as far as I’m concerned that is an NFL style offense. 65% completion percentage in college compared to NFL because of the talent difference of the opponent but he ran his offense well and made all sorts of different throws.

Mel Kiper, Jr. is good at what he does.

I don’t know why you’d take a potshot at him for no reason. Pryor probably would’ve been given a fourth-round draft grade at best from Kiper, Todd McShay or Mike Mayock. I’d place a bet on something closer to round six.

Also, Pryor’s suspension doesn’t affect his stock because he’s not seeing the field anytime soon.

My most reason laghter at Kiper

Was when he was praising Jimmy Clausen as a Franchise QB (panthers then select cam newton at the #1 spot), and him saying Sergio Kindle would be amazing.

Basically when a player puts up very good numbers, he gets on the guys bandwagon, and he makes these great accusations about the player without any real thought or analysis. Well…… not too much in depth analysis.

by Jack'sAxe on Sep 4, 2011 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't say solely.

If a guy is putting up great numbers, he’ll jump on him, and look at him, and praise him for what others have already praised him to be. Example: Jimmy Clausen, and Sergio Kindle.

To further engulf in what I said, i feel like he hypes up a player quite a bit, but he doesn’t look at the overall picture. A QB can have an 90% completion percentage in a game, but if all of those passes were short, and/or the WR saves him, I am less than impressed. that was the case with clausen. I was not impressed with him at all, yet kiper is hyping him up, and no Clausen is looking to not play at all.

I can’t remember a bunch of players names. I listen to kiper, and what he has to say like mayock, but it doesn’t mean I have to agree with him. I disagree with him more often than agree, which is why I don’t like him at all. I feel like he hypes players up, and doesn’t give a full analysis on his strengths and weaknesses, and go in depth with his awareness, pocket presence, accuracy, etc (in terms of QB). I WISH he goes more in depth, but it seems he goes more off of stats, division, more than anything else.

Vick still needs to get better at passing and reading defenses.

He is a good passer. But teams can still exploit him pretty well. All you really need to do is FORCE him to pass and not run, and you can win because he really is just GOOD at passing. Maybe a bit above good.

tawain, d Moore, d hagan, DVD, ausberry barksdale and wiz

Hagan is not a rookie.

besides that, what we have seen so far out of Barksdale and D Moore, we like what we saw. Very much. In camp, and in preseason they have been performing above average with us, and that can only mean very good things. Ausberry has the potential to be our Dallas Clark-like WR, in terms of being a WR/TE tweener that will only create mismatches. Taiwan…. remains to be seens how great he will be in the season, but he had a very good preseason at least.

Boss>Zach because of his superior blocking and similar skills in the passing game.

SO far Wiz>gallery, but I can only go off of preseason. the times Wiz has been in, the QBs were not touched.

ROutt will do fine at the #1. imo, I don’t think we should worry about him.

Maybe we are setting ourselves up, but what we have looked at so far, its hard not to be very optimistic.

Yeah it is.

Compare their stats if you want. Boss could have passed Miller for receiving yards last year if he was thrown too more often. He is also a bigger redzone target. All Boss needed was another 120 yards, and looking at the catches of each player, Boss could have matched that np.

its debateable

i think miller’s best trait, was that he was consistant/reliable. Our current WR group is more than capable of doing their jobs this year, they are just unproven for the most part. the talent is there though, its just a matter of time til the talent translates to production on the field

money doesnt mean anything

he got paid for previous production and potential production, we paid millions to javon walker and deangelo hall for past production got lil in return. Boss is a product of the system in NY, they dont throw to TEs much, replace Miller with Boss here, he would put up similar numbers. Its like the whole Nnamdi and Revis thing, people say Revis is better because he gets picks and moves around the field, but its about the system their in. at the end of the day...

its up to a player to produce. Boss is not as praised as Miller for recieving skills, but I believe he will produce when we need him to. Our passing game needs to get rid of its crutch(relying solely on the TE) and we need our WRs to produce, might be a few growing pains, but its a neccessary step if we want a legitamate passing game. Would of loved to have Miller back, but thats no longer relevent.

Dude how can you say that?

Miller was targeted 93 times last season, while Boss was the 4th option on his offense.

How can you say that Miller’s success was not a product of our offense? JC checks the ball down 9/10 times. I’d be willing to bet that our TEs end up with more catches then Seattle’s TEs. Notice I’m keeping the names out of it because I am talking about systems only.

by TheDudeAbides138 on Sep 5, 2011 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions

And besides

Miller had 12 TDs in four seasons. 90% of his catches were him laying down in coverage and getting that 6-7 yard reception to move the chains. Zach Miller was never the Ghost to the Post.

I’m of the mindset that we didn’t even need Boss to replace Miller. I feel like the way we use our TEs we could bring in ANYONE and they would be able to pick up 40 catches minimum on the season. Fact is JC likes the check down to the RB or TE, and uses it constantly. Whoever lines up there is gonna be the benefactor.

by TheDudeAbides138 on Sep 5, 2011 10:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Some truth but overstated. Jason requires more separation than most QBs or won't feel comfortable

enough to throw. JC avoids the windows and plays the percentages. Zach excelled at separation and has good hands. JC became addicted to Zach and we’ll have to see if his cold turkey cure works – and he’s able to spread the ball around – or regresses into his addiction.

Since the Raiders signed Ricky Brown, we can assume he's on the 53-man roster.

I would guess Michael Bennett is getting cut since he’s one of (technically) five running backs on the 53-man roster. He’s fourth on the depth chart behind Darren McFadden, Michael Bush and Taiwan Jones.

I don't know the figurs of Brown, but I still think we COULD sign tatupu.

I can see having Tatupu, and put Ro on the outside. I believe he has enough speed/hip movement to do well on the outside. Plus it would help our chances with them random 50+ yard runs, and I believe Ro can be a hell of a pass rusher.

Tatupu, to me, is not out of the question just yet. I would like a LB core as McClain-Tatupu-Wimbley

But its likely we’ll stick with Groves. There was no attempt in the preseason to see what anyone else can do at his starting OLB position.

According to football outsiders

Houston was the best run stop rate of any DE in the league, and shaugnessy was kind of up there. imo, I think those random 40+ yard runs just…. well just come. Once they get past our DL, its all LBs and DBs next, and our OLBs are kind of suspect against the run (i say kind of because I think Wimbley does pretty well against it).

You think those random 40+ yard runs just…. well just come?

You cannot be serious. Our OLBs don’t fill the gap left vacant by Ro’, and don’t seal the edge on sweeps and cutbacks.

Plus, out so-called SS (T. Branch) can’t make a play until the runner has moved the chains.

With an All Pro DL, if the Raiders can’t stop the run, it’s time we understand why.

by jbrat on Sep 4, 2011 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions

They do just come. and it IS because our OLBs and DBs were okay against the run last year.

That All Pro DL stops runs pretty well. Here is a list of best and worst stop rate against runs in 2010: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2011/best-and-worst-run-stop-rates-2010

Houston is right at the top. Henderson is there too. And here is a look at run defeats: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2011/most-run-defeats-2010

You’ll notice McClain, Shaugnessy and Branch are there.

We have no problem stopping the run, but once the RB gets past our DL, there are really only 2 players who could stop the run (Nnamdi can do this too, but he is never really there to stop it). Thus, we give up BIG runs every now and then, but overall, we do fairly well against the run.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

We finished 29th v. the run in 2010

We are consistently vulnerable to cutbacks because (a) our OLBs cannot seal the edge and (b) our safeties arrive late.

Losers love statistics. Our pass defense looked great statistically because WE CANNOT STOP THE RUN.

But film don’t lie and GAME DAY don’t lie.

by jbrat on Sep 5, 2011 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

these are advance statistics. not these copy and paste statistics that nfl.com has.

If you actually have read how each of stop rate and run defeats, and how they work, you wouldn’t be saying that.

Let me set the record strait AGAIN.

We are consistently vulnerable to cutbacks because (a) our OLBs cannot seal the edge and (b) our safeties arrive late.

Thats what I have been saying all along. And film dont lie and gameday dont lie? Of course. On gameday and film, we give up 2-4 yards a run, and than we give up 40 yards. THAT IS WHAT SCREWS UP OUR STATS!!!! We give up big runs randomly. Runners are a threat to go the distance, but because of the DL that we have, we keep runners at bay, but than all of a sudden they break a 40+ yard run.

THATS why I say our run defense is fine. We just have to prevent the big plays.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

The problem is OLBs, and I'm not excluding Wimbley, but it's predominantly Groves and any of

the OLB backups. The DL, no matter how good, is going to let some through, and that’s when our true weakness is revealed. That weakness has not been addressed and I hold Hue & Co. responsible.

Right. I agree with you.

but My case has been the fact that we let up the big runs every now and than, but we stop their runs more than give up those big runs. Yes, we gave up more big runs than the entire league, and thats a problem. Like I said, we give up the big runs every now and than, but I find that we stop the runs pretty dang well more often than letting off the big ones. its not like we give up 5+ yards a play (which by the end of a game, can be skewed if a guy like Chris Johnson get a 70+ yard play…..).

He played in the same amount of games as Groves, only started 2 more than him, and had twice as many tackles. Tackles don’t tell the whole story, but it just goes to show that he was in way more plays than Groves was in for us. Mike Mitchell would be a better option at OLB than Groves.

More of a band aide type of solution til we find a better replacement. As for Peterson, there’s probably health concerns about him, or he would of been signed already by someone.

Probably should of been more agressive on getting a WLB but it is what it is. Cant really throw Groves under the bus if you got nothing better. Last thing we need is Groves to lose confidence and him play at a lower level. Maybe we tweaked our defensive scheme so he wont be a big liability on defence? We have been keepin the schemes vanilla all preseason.

Unfortunately, Barksdale will not replace Barnes this season.

At the very least, Barksdale is a victim of the lockout. What I really suspect is that Barksdale is an unseasoned rookie who simply needs more time. It is extremely rare for any team to play 2 rookies on the OL.

by jbrat on Sep 4, 2011 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I respect what you say but you are saying that he automatically is incapable of developing.

Wiz is starting. To say that either BC or Barks will not break through seems a bit rigid in your thinking. You might be right but I will not hold it as god’s football law. I am hoping to have 3 rookies start as incredible as it seems. These players have talent and I believe possess the potential to break into the line. Particularly for BC, I don’t want him sitting behind Carlisle for another entire year. Just think how much more seasoned our line will be next year if these guys played this year. If BC would have been given more playing time last year, there’s no doubt in my mind he would be playing now instead of Carlisle.

by RaiderPsycho on Sep 5, 2011 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Who said anything about B. Campbell?

I think Campbell’s early camp injury is the only thing that kept him out of the starting lineup. Campbell is NOT a rookie and might supplant Carlisle even before our bye week.

Barksdale is a rookie, and unfortunately K. Barnes will either (a) need to play poorly or (b) get injured for Barksdale to play. Even then, it’s not entirely clear that S. Heyer would not supplant Barnes at RT.

by jbrat on Sep 5, 2011 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

My bad on BC, just meant to say Barks at that point.

I was kind of looking at BC as being a “2nd year rookie” since he only played special teams and not at his position on the line in his first year, which is why I mentioned him.

Brian Waters. Brian Waters. Brian Bloody Waters.

Why oh why have we let him escape?

Would have provided the leadership we need on the OL, would have been a significant upgrade, immediate starter and created more options for us.

Hasn't anyone picked him up?

If not, you gotta think there’s something physically wrong with him, at least for the time being.

He’s too big of a name to not get signed w/anyone unless he’s hurt and/or overweight.

And I’d guess the same about Tatupu as well.

New England got him.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Indeed.

He’s been available for a number of weeks and the fact the NE picked him up just emphasises what a good acquisition he would have been. Him and Wiz would have been a great tandem at guard.

NE makes mistakes as well.

Maybe Waters will do bad this year. idk

Chief fans liked him, so Im surprised the raiders didnt want him. maybe because he WAS a chief. lol
