We know that Murphy is out for the first game and assuming that neither Boss or Mitchell are available that puts the number of available players at 50. Only 46 dress for the game, so my question is who sits?
With 7 WRs on the roster the obvious choice would be to sit 2 WR and go in with 5. Murphy is already ruled out because of injury and looking at the roster you'd have to say Miller is the obvious choice to miss out. However Miller has been the only player returning punts this week, so if he's pencilled in as the punt returner who does that leave out? DHB? Probably the next one everyone would like to see out but I don't see that happening. Hagan? He's been the best possession receiver in pre-season. Moore? All he's done is make plays in practice and on the field. Ford or Schilens? These are supposedly your top two guys, would you really sit one of them?
So if Hue wants all his toys available can they find 4 other guys to sit without seriously weakening what little depth we have? My thoughts are that it's possible, just. I definitely think they'll only dress 4 CBs with Huff playing nickel occasionally. To me that means Chekwa misses out. Porter will be dressed for ST duties. With Mitchell already out and Huff playing some nickel they will dress all 4 available safeties. Instead I think they will sit a LB, probably Ricky Brown, with Blackstock backing up RoMac and Scott or Moss playing LB in a pinch. Finally on the defensive side I think they sit a DL, probably Bryant and leave Seymour, Kelly and Henderson on a 3 man rotation in the middle. That leaves one guy to sit on the offensive side. My thought is that they go into the game with 2 TE and sit Gordon. in the jumbo formations they tend to play with an eligible OL and so I don't think that 3rd TE needs to be active. The other option if you wanted to keep all the WR would be to play with 7 OL but I can't see that happening.
It seems it might be possible for all the toys to be on show Monday night, what do you think?
