WOW................

I loved Hues attitude and how he turned our offense around too bad we couldnt get a decent DC to help him out. I hope we can get a big name coach in here because thats what its going to take to make this enen remotely look like a good decision.

Just awful news

I know we’re turning a page with the death of Mr. Davis. But look at what Hue did with this offense. I wonder what led to this. Really shocked and disappointed.

by RLangford on Jan 10, 2012 10:58 AM PST reply actions

It's simple

He was way over his head. He couldn’t even manage the damn clock and that’s just the glaring and obvious shit. Behind the scenes he was probably worse.

by Ricky Reed on Jan 10, 2012 11:17 AM PST up reply actions

Not really, the GM wants his guys. Hue was an Al pick. We might as well really start fresh.

We will play less man next year too. And switch to a 3-4 a source tells me.
Al davis defensive shcheme is out through the window.

Down with the predictable defenses

I welcome many changes to our defensive structure.

We don't have the roster for a 3-4 and not many picks to make that siwtch...it'd be really tough this season

So dumb

We missed the playoffs cause JC and DMC were hurt, Hue wasnt great but he wasnt bad and it wasnt fully his fault. The CP trade sucked but it wasnt the main reason for our fall. We cant keep firing coaches like this

RIP Al Davis

Never said I was happy with 8-8, moron.

But with all the shit that went on we were lucky to get that. A remotely healthy team would have done far better.

And firing a coach after one year and all the difficulties this team went through does not make this position attractive.

This team was making progress...

Now we start over, we’ll be lucky to be 8-8 next season with games against the Steelers, Ravens, Saints, Falcons….this is not what we needed, we had a good Offense, just needed some D and we were good to go…

by Raider Roy on Jan 10, 2012 11:22 AM PST up reply actions

not even close

Reports that Hue lost the team, Is not what you want in a HC. Would you prefer to keep Hue 1 more year ,find out things are not good and then change him next year. ESPN would start beating the lame duck HC right away. Also if Hue had a direct line in his contract to Mark as reported Then as Reg I would want that loop hole closed…you need cohesiveness not division, Changing coaches now likely saves us a year.

What’s your take on him as an OC?

by MNchiefsfan on Jan 10, 2012 3:31 PM PST up reply actions

It's going to depend on the pieces he has in place.

KC would be an appealing situation because of Charles and Bowe and Baldwin and Moeaki. The unsettled QB situation could be troublesome since he proved to have issues with it with Campbell and Grad in 2010 and when Campbell got hurt in 2011.

His mentality and risk taking seem s to fly in the face of the Parcells-ian mentality of running ball and playing defense, but with the right QB even Parcells’ DC has bought into the pass-first mentality and gutted his defense to keep Brady chucking on all cylinders.

KC could do worse in an OC, though.

I think the right thing was to keep Crennel...

I didn’t think Haley should have been fired…I think to build a winner you have to be consistent…Hopefully we bring in a capable OC….for it to be rivalry both team have to be dominant…

I'm surprised

It sounded like people at AP were most or less unanimous that Haley should go. I didn’t really understand why, but it was suggested he wasn’t getting along with Pioli.

by rightnasty on Jan 10, 2012 11:32 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah most of AP seemed to want him gone...

Especially after the win against the Packers. I think if Orton wouldn’t have hurt his finger Haley would still be our coach. At the same time there were reports that Pioli wanted to fire Haley after last years playoff game. If we would have had a full offseason it might have happened.

As well as the play calling.

And the fact that every time we lost we got KILLED. Lot of things added up.

Haley was terrible as a HC

and I’m not sold on him as an OC, either. He received the “genius” tag in the same fashion Martz did, and both were because of a couple great seasons by Kurt Warner and some great talent on offense. I could have been Arizona’s OC on that run to the Super Bowl and it wouldn’t have made a difference. Warner was just that zoned in with Boldin and Fitz.

I didn’t say the guy was Tom Brady. He’s an average QB. However, with the Raiders running game, WRs, and special teams that is all they should need. They just need a QB who makes smart decisions. They won 4 of the 6 games Campbell started and one of the losses was totally on the defense (Bills game). I don’t care if the QB makes it pretty. I care that he doesn’t cost the team. Campbell had a slightly better QB rating than Palmer in part because he threw more TD’s than picks.

by Raider1978 on Jan 10, 2012 11:17 AM PST reply actions

Not sure I agree with this move

I thought he deserved another year. I think the coaching position is a more attractive one without Al Davis, but without draft picks and up against the cap, I’m still not sure we can get a top flight coach to put his staple on. I’m tired of rebuilding and I’m not sure we needed a complete overhaul. Thought if Hue Jackson would have made better decisions in terms of game management, and overall sense of self worth, but got to give it to the new boss. Making this kind of statement right away is bold, and I hope it works out in terms of better overall quality of coaching, discipline and game management.

Wrong Coach Fired!!!!

I was expecting to hear Chuck Bresnahan being fired.

by Archangel25 on Jan 10, 2012 11:21 AM PST reply actions

I'm fine with this decision

While Hue was good for our offense, it seemed like he was overwhelmed as a head coach because he tried to do too much. I mean we set a record for penalties this year. It is the head coaches job to make sure players don’t take stupid penalties (take them out so they learn their lesson) but Hue never seemed to address it or the players didn’t listen to him. Our penalties killed our drives and extended the other teams drives.

Hue’s play calling got bland and predictable in games where we built up an early lead even to the point where I knew what play they were going to run. Case in point, the bills game. It seemed like he was never able to make the half time adjustments. While our defense was bad I also thought our offense didn’t do them any favors by having too many 3 and outs in games we had leads in.

Then look at how many times we had to burn timeouts because there was confusion over what play was being called.

I think this is why McKenzie fired him. He wants and needs to change the culture of the team. And that starts with Hue.

by timbaland on Jan 10, 2012 11:21 AM PST reply actions

His playcalling didn't protect our suspect defense

Going for bombs on 3rd or 4th and short, or passing on field goals in automatic situations, or taking timeouts a wrong times didn’t help our defense. We needed more ball control and overall game management.

by rightnasty on Jan 10, 2012 11:24 AM PST reply actions

We are really seeing who wants the team to be good and who is just a negative dumbass

If Moss is brought in, I will be really dissapointed in how McKenzie started off by playing favorites. This is ugly dissapointing news and this will set us back, no stability, new system for a QB that was established with his system, we have no stability and now snce Palmer probably wont work in a new system its either back to mediocre with Campbell, gambling with Pryor or bringing in a bum. By mediocre I mean not winning it all, Campbell can lead us to the PlayOffs but he doesnt have that ’’it’’ that Palmer has that is a MOST if you want to win a SB. I am dissapointed and worried, who are we bringing in at HC too? If McKenzie is playng favorites we will bring in Moss, who is NOT ready to be HC, and if he isnt he will have to battle it out for Cowher cause Gruden just re-signed with ESPN, he aint comming back

this should be a relief, not a worry

should be obvious, Jackson brought too much melodrama and too little solid, consistent work. When Davis passed he was way over his head and tried to bluster his way through it. A head coach need organizational and planning skills another level beyond an offensive coordinator ; many coordinators who get their chance to be boss end up mediocre, which is probably how McKenzie saw things would go under Jackson. Anyone who really thinks he was championship calibre has a superficial understanding of how competitive/demanding it gets at the very top ; we can’t see what goes on in the practices and coaches’ meetings and scouting sessions, but Jackson didn’t appear to have the level of focus to back up his words, and he was careless with his words in public regarding his players.

I'm wondering if Hue's attitude had more to do with this than his coaching

Hue shot his mouth off before the GM was hired about how he wanted to be in charge, and that may not have sat well with McKenzie. I don’t like change for change’s sake—if Hue is willing to learn he could have gotten better next season—but IF McKenzie is bringing in a better coach then I’m fine with it. It’s all about who will replace him. We saw the difference bringing a solid coach like Fox to Denver made for them—they went from awful to winning at least one playoff game.

I'm very skeptical of that

But it can’t be proven or disproven. What is clear is that they have a great running game and a strong defense—good enough for 8-8 with probably less talent than the Raiders have.

As a packer fan,

I don’t really know all that much about the way the raiders have functioned. I do know that a huge factor in the success of the Packers is the great relationship between Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy. Jackson may not have been a bad coach. But if you want to win championships you have to do better than “not bad”. You have to have YOUR guy.

All is vanity.

by levnclf on Jan 10, 2012 11:34 AM PST reply actions

I can't say. I don't think anyone can say.

When Thompson hired McCarthy I was kinda like, “WTF, this guy was in charge of the worst offense in the NFL last year.” Obviously Ted knew what he was doing.

How can any of this be worse than

a DECADE of NO playoff appearances? Everyone KNEW the Bronco’s were toast 7 weeks ago, right? The Raiders have been doing VERY LITTLE right for the last 4 years, and coaching has been the biggest issue. Maybe we should let someone with YEARS of NFL organizational expierence take a shot. And I’m sure Hue did say no job was safe- how many of those guys are known OUTSIDE of the organization for their coaching skill?

"Carter's 25-game hitting streak isn't any normal streak. He's 46 for 97 (.474 average) during the run, adding 16 walks and compiling 81 total bases in the process. I'm out of superlatives for what he's doing." - Kevin Goldstein

The starting over was a given when Al Davis died

Mark Davis is not Al, but he relied on some of Al’s most trusted advisers like Ron Wolf to hire McKenzie. The whole organization is going to change, because there’s no Al Davis. I like Hue Jackson, and think he’s a helluva coach, but nearly every new GM brings in his own coach. McKenzie is no different, and while I think Hue earned another shot, I’m not surprised by this move. They probably didn’t mesh on personnel moves and philosophy, given what Hue does and where McKenzie is coming from.

Maybe we’ll start to see the continuity we’ve all been clamoring for with this regime. I know I’m going to give McKenzie some time to prove himself before questioning his ability to run this organization.

If Hue’s gone, I’m going to assume that the entire staff will be blown up and we’ll actually allow our Head Coach the chance to fill out his own staff for a change. Everyone’s on Winston Moss, but what about Dom Capers? He’s had success as a HC in Carolina, and we could see anyone off the Holmgren tree get a look, too. The Raiders are going to start doing business more like Green Bay, and given Green Bay’s success, I won’t argue with the formula until it fails. If we were going to pick an organization to emulate, it would have to be one of three or four: New England, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, or Green Bay. Green Bay makes sense because of the Ron Wolf connection.

This time next year, I think we’ll be singing a different tune, and we’ll have a clear direction to how this team will be built and maintained over the next decade.

  1. The conversations between Hue and Reggie must not have gone well as far as ideas for the future.
  2. If Reggie talked to any players about Hue that must have also not gone well.
At least that is my hope that he talked to some people before making the move.
I think we have to wait and see before we decide good or bad move. I do wish Hue well and think he will land somewhere maybe even as a HC.

The reason our team failed last season was the defense. Last I checked Hue Jackson takes care of the offense. Bresnahan fired after one season, fine, makes sense. Firing Hue Jackson does not.

Hue and Palmer have a history together. Like the trade for Palmer or not, he is our QB for the next few years. He was expecting to be coached by Hue.

According to NFL.com

there is a belief that this firing was more of a power move. According to, I believe Mike Lombardi, Jackson had a clause in his contract where he would report directly to the general managing partner or someone, which is the same person that McKenzie would also report too and he didn’t want Jackson going around saying that he’s (jackson) in charge.

by bslack32 on Jan 10, 2012 12:39 PM PST reply actions

Well

that would make sense if the contract was done under Al Davis, since there was no GM and Al was the organization. Maybe Reggie demanded Hue renegotiate and he refused, forcing Reggie’s hand. I guess we’ll never really know for sure.

Fuck it

RIP Oakland Raiders. The organization we knew is gone. I thought this might happen, especially after Al passed. I don’t know the direction we are going now, but I’m sure for the immediate future it will be backwards. I wouldn’t be surprised if Palmer is shipped off, Jason won’t come back either. DMC may get one more year to prove he can stay healthy or else. Bush may be gone for good too. If your going to bring in your guys, there is no sense in keeping the old regime. Great for the defense, sweeping changes were needed. The offense will take a step back. If Moss is the new head coach, then we will have had our 4th straight rookie head coach. That spells doom to me. I figure with some luck, we finish 3rd next year in the AFC West. Depends on what else happens next I suppose. It sounds to me like a rebuild job. Mr. Davis liked to reload, I don’t think he ever liked the term rebuild. I’m sure many of you are happy and rejoicing now. Al is dead, Hue is gone, and Palmer probably next. At that rate, I also think our playoff chances are gone for the time being as a result. I’m upset with the move but the Raiders are still my team. Whoever plays, coaches, or whatever. I’ll support to the end. But I’m far from happy.

No disrespect to the Pack

But the Raiders were never like any team. If I wanted to be a Packer fan, I would be. I’ve let go of the Raider mantra for now. Perhaps it was getting stale, but I liked it. Until McKenzie says the words “Commitment to Execellence” or “Just win baby”, I’m going to say he is building the Oakland Packers. By comparison, we will never be like them. Their fans own that team. Year in and out, no matter what, their fans are the best in the NFL. They sell out just about every season. Even during the down years. The Nation is often fair weather. Didn’t see the sell outs for the 2-14 or 4-12 campaigns. Then again, our team has been far shittier than Green Bays. Change has happened, I hope for the best. The NFL is crazy and unpredictable. The Packers barely made the playoffs last year and won it all. Tebowmania happened this year. Eh, shit happens.

by lakers007raiders on Jan 10, 2012 1:20 PM PST up reply actions

Again

McKenzie is a Raider who learned his trade from the guy who was Al Davis’ right hand man in building the Raiders 3 Super Bowl champions. Some people actually suggest that the Raiders dominance ended when Ron Wolf left. If anything Green Bay was built in the image of the Raiders over the past 20 years by guys who helped build the Raiders.

The fan bases are completely different, but the Packers front office and the way they put the team together is very similar to the way Wolf and Davis built the perennial power Raiders in 70s.

we never retreat we always ATTACK!!!

by transparent58 on Jan 10, 2012 2:04 PM PST up reply actions

You say that like it's a bad thing

Remember that the guy that built the Packers into what they are was Al Davis’ right hand in building those great teams in the 70’s and 80’s. If anything it’s just coming full circle. The Packers became the Green Bay Raiders under Ron Wolf. Now we’re getting someone from that personnel tree. It’s not like Green Bay hasn’t been one of the best run organizations in the NFL since the mid 90’s or anything.

The uniqueness of the how the Raiders were run died on Oct. 8 2011. At least in McKenzie we’ve got a guy who played for the Raiders and learned the football operations game from one of the best personnel men in NFL and Raiders history.

I was hoping Hue would stick, but I’ll yield those decisions to they now captaining our pirate ship, just like I yielded to Al’s expertise prior to his passing.

All Reggie McKenzie did in Green Bay was help put together three Super Bowl teams and perennial contenders…what shitty resume.

we never retreat we always ATTACK!!!

by transparent58 on Jan 10, 2012 12:53 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah

But how much of the credit for that is McKenzie due with the bulk of it going to McCarthy and Thompson and the best QB in the league bar none?

by rightnasty on Jan 10, 2012 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

Well it all started with Ron Wolf

and signing Reggie White, hiring Holmgren and trading for Favre. McKenzie was there for those years under Wolf, too. It’s like asking who gets more credit for the 70’s Raiders, Al Davis, Ron Wolf, John Madden, or having Ken Stabler.

Someone had to nut up and take a flier on Rodgers when he was in a free fall. Phil Savage did the same thing the following year for Brady Quinn and it didn’t work out so well. The Green Bay scouting and football operations side was built by Ron Wolf and it has survived three coaches (Holmgren, Sherman, and McCarthy) and won Super Bowls with two of them.

If he brings even half of the success he had in Green Bay to Oakland, it’s a great move by Mark Davis.

The Raiders of the Decades, if anything

Passed with Mr. Davis.

Not with the dismissal of a short-time head coach of questionable qualification and skill.

by lchristmas on Jan 10, 2012 1:07 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

This

Everyone’s just assuming it’s going to be Moss, but McKenzie’s history in Green Bay opens a lot of doors from the Holmgren era too…it’s not just current staff that will be candidates, but that Walsh/Holgren tree has a lot of branches…add in the Dom Capers defensive tree that includes Dick LeBeau’s staff in Pittsburgh it could be a very interesting hire.

These defensive players ought to be happy about it because they were instrumental in bringing him down. And if they’re not, they have themselves largely to blame.

thanks to chuck as well. took hue down with him

Unless he brings in someone witha great resume, I will think this as a very bad move until proven otherwise.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Suggestions beyond Cowher, Gruden, Fisher, and Dungy?

because Super Bowl winning coaches are always successful in stint #2 after winning the Super Bowl. I think only Holmgren and Parcells ever got back to the big game with a different team…

Would have said Schottenheimer

If he could get over his Raider hate, but apparently he’s going to TB.

Del Rio can be our coach.

or someone else. I do want Del Rio to be on this team’s coaching staff though

I like de rio as a defensive guy.

Capers… I would be okay with that. NO on jeff fisher please.

Del Rio as a DC wouldn't be bad

if we stay with the 4-3, but I figure we’ll be seeing an influx of Capers/Lebeau disciples, though I’d much rather see Mike Nolan as the DC than anyone else, right now.

Head Coach could be just about anyone…hell, it could even be Mooch…

@Jerrymcd Jerry McDonald

Chuck Bresnahan at facility, going out for some exercise. Has no comment. Likewise Rod Woodson, who just departed in his SUV.

He's getting in shape for Hometown Buffet:

I bet that he goes out to the B&B with Art Shell and Tom Walsh.

I'm sure they've already been informed that their contracts won't be renewed

Maybe Woodson stays because he played in Capers’ defense, too. Can’t see anyone that was on staff outside him sticking around.

What Im reading is that it WAS Mark Davis who fired HUE now

by RAIDER_FAN15 on Jan 10, 2012 1:20 PM PST reply actions

What?

He signs on to the Palmer trade, then changes his mind and fires Hue??

by rightnasty on Jan 10, 2012 1:21 PM PST up reply actions

yup

we will see, all speculation has been dead on so far.

by RAIDER_FAN15 on Jan 10, 2012 1:22 PM PST up reply actions

When the wheels fell off after the Palmer deal

might have had something to do with his change of heart, no?

That, and even Al probably wouldn’t have signed off on the Palmer deal…

If he wanted to err on the side of caution

He should have just said no to Hue. If he thinks it was a mistake now, fixing that mistake is going to be hard.

by rightnasty on Jan 10, 2012 1:28 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think anyone in the organization was truly prepared for Al's passing

and it’s pretty obvious mistakes were made in its wake. Fixing those mistakes won’t be easy, right away, but they can be fixed…

by transparent58 on Jan 10, 2012 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, that's the thing

They all said there were “contingencies” in place for when Al passed away, but it just looks like complete chaos. And now they hope Mckenzie can make sense out of the chaos, and so must we.

by rightnasty on Jan 10, 2012 1:34 PM PST up reply actions

It's really all we got

but we could have done much worse than McKenzie IMO. Time will tell, but I think he’s about the best possible option we had outside of snagging existing GMs from the Ravens, Steelers, Packers, or Saints.

Why is it

whenever discussing the Raiders the term “cautious optimism” is always on my mind?

by rightnasty on Jan 10, 2012 1:51 PM PST up reply actions

because you're grounded in reality?

I would love to have my expectations ratified by my favorite team, but we’re in an unprecedented transition. This will be the first off season since 1963 in which Al Davis hasn’t had a formal personnel or coaching role.

Comparing 2012 to any year in Raiders history lacks any credibility.

New Era for Raiders!

Probably going to be GB “lite” for the first year, and then we will regain out identity. I’m glad Hue Jax is gone. This organization needs a complete Restart/Reset. Good move Reggie!

It wasn't exactly ideal circumstances, for the introduction either.

Firing Jackson had the reporters looking for blood, and it was the first new hire presser that didn’t involve Al Davis in 48 years.

Even if he’d come out like a cross between Bill Clinton, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X people would find something to bitch about…“He was too smooth, I want a real person running my team.”

On the surface

On the surface Hue appeared to be a decent coaching choice. This was relative compared to what we as fans have had to endure sice Art Shell was let go the first time.(Aside from the Gruden years) Hue wasn’t a Mike White,Art Shell (the sequel), or a Lane Kiffen. He appeared to be a upgrade.
I respected the man all the way up until his post-game comments following the SD game. You never, ever, ever, ever, ever sell out your team in front of the world. Doesn’t matter if it was a 100% true. You never do it. Do it behind closed doors…
Hue Jackson looked like a desperate man who knew a GM was on the way in. He sold his team out in hopes of getting a 2nd chance.
The words “I’m going to become more involved” should never come out of a head coaches mouth. This is implying that you didn’t know or was not involved when your team was blowing leads all season long or was setting records for penalties. You may “think” it, but you never “say it”.
Offensive injuries aside…there was still an opportunity to win the division. We understate the importance of discipline because we are “Raiders fans”, we have always been penalized. Times have changed, Al Davis (RIP) never did, and it permeated the organization.
If you hold onto strict ideals, you perish and fade away… There has to be a “middle ground” where we can uphold the pride and traditions of the organization and still “adapt” to our opposition.(be it the refs, the NFL, or other teams) period.
Very few teams in the NFL have the pride and tradition of the Oakland Raiders. (Green Bay and Pittsburgh)….
the proof is in the record books…. both teams have won multiple Super-Bowls since 1984…and post significantly better records. What are they doing different? Hmmmm?

Sadly, Hue was another puppet-coach and it showed during that press conference.
