Once you grasp the basic idea of samples vs populations, standard deviations and t and z-scores, everything is just variations on the same formula/concept.

I really think he is being considered for the Head coaching job.
Imagine being led by such an Elite coach. A defensive genious Breshnahan is!!!
The RaiderLaker
REGGIE SAID: The head coach will pick his entire staff when the coach arrives.
At the end of the meeting when the dick head reporter was shouting at Mark why did you fire Hugh well that was an awkward moment but Reggie stepped in and explained that Reggie could bring his own guy in and after evaluating Hugh he had made his decision.
Mark also stated he was looking at stadium sites and or relocating and he will be getting back to focusing on that plan now that Reggie is there.

I don't believe that for a second
no way they could’ve fired him if he made the playoffs. I thought Hue deserved another year but I can’t fault this decision because the team was painfully unprepared to play their most important game in years AND he threw his players under the bus in the post game press conference which is unbecoming of a head coach.
he doesnt look interested in talking about Hue Jackson

If we were thinking Reggie would come out talking about a clear vision to back up his quick firing of Hue, we’re not getting it. We’re getting the standard new GM spiel.

Very true but as long as he takes care of raiders behind the scenes all that counts.
Reggie is going to do one thing. He is going to to turn the Raiders into an Elite team once again. He will give back to the true die hard fans where ever you are who stick by the Raiders and bleed silver and black threw the good and bad. Bottom line is this change will give many reaping rewards to the fans and to the new ones to be proud of this team like I always am. We will be the talk of the NFL again instead of the laughing stalk of breaking penalty records. I am sure he will get that corrected otherwise Reggie might put Roger Goodell in chock hold LOL

MIght be a good thing if a lot of you jackasses here
stop ripping Mark Davis and Reggie.
Who gives a shit how well they speak? This isn’t a debate competition or a high school public speaking class.
The great thing about our new GM is he has helped build a team, not solely from draft choices, but from non-drafted free agents and other ways. He already talked about that with regard to what we can do without draft picks.
It’s a new era. Does it really need to begin here with a lot of guys behind their computers ripping on our new owner and GM?

Reggie gets it and he's giving you what you've wanted
A new era. A change in how we do things. And it’s going to be modeled on the very best organization in football right now: the Packers.
He's not a coach
he’s a personnel guy. He’ll build the team based on the needs of the schemes installed by the coaching staff. It’s how we switched to the 3-4 because of injuries and the brilliance of Ted Hendricks in the 70s.

Best organization in football?
Looks to me more like the best QB in the league surrounded by incredible receiving talent. That defense is absolute garbage and the offensive line has never been elite. Have they built an explosive team with smart drafting? Sure. But I don’t know if I’d call them the best organization in football.

Look at the number of undrafted free agents that contribute
Don’t judge their defense on yards. It was very solid last year.
and low round draft picks
the free agent signings like Woodson, when no one else wanted him, it goes on an on.

Their defense was OK last year
It’s atrocious this year. If the Packers don’t have an elite QB, they’re a 9-7 or 8-8 team. Remind you of anyone other team??

They do have an elite QB, though
same applies to NE and NO. Bellichek is supposed to be one of the best defensive coaches in NFL history, yet the Patriots defensive stats are poop. The only stats that matter are wins and losses.

i think their issue is more on the personnel there as opposed to Belichick. After all he did pressure the hell out of Teblow. Give him Oaklands D and I wouldnt be surprised his numbers on D would change.

difference in NE and GB is the TOs tho, cause even with their sub par D play theyve managed to get turnovers in bunches plus having Rodgers at QB always helps.
by SilvrnBlck forever on Jan 10, 2012 4:45 PM PST up reply actions
exactly
Capers defense has always been about pressure from odd angles. It was in Pittsburgh, it was in Carolina, it has been in Green Bay. When you get pressure, you force turnovers. When you don’t you get torched from time to time…
Green Bay’s offense usually forces teams to be one dimensional and pass to try and keep, this coupled with how quickly the GB offense scores leads to the D getting tired throughout the course of the game…it’s nearly the same thing if the offense is terrible…
we never retreat we always ATTACK!!!
by transparent58 on Jan 10, 2012 4:55 PM PST up reply actions
defense now
is not about yards given up…the rules for offense have changed the game. Its points allowed and turnovers that win now on D …Having a great passing game does not hurt either

Yeah real idiotic
Dead last in yards per game. Committed more defensive penalties than the Raiders (30th). 26th in defensive third down percentage (also worse than the Raiders). And yet we all want Bresnahan fired while you defend Green Bay’s defense

The Packers were so bad in defense this year
Because they COULD be
When you are up by 2 TDs by the end of the 1st quarter you can play soft and just let the other team go underneath all game long which is what they have done.
They get turnovers instead of stops.

Yep.
You cant judge a defense on yards. Judge them on points, and turnovers. Those matter the most. I could give a shit about passing yards in a passing league.
I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Packer fan here
Any thought that the GB Defense last year was just ‘ok’ is simply way off base. It was a top 5 D last year, and it was a major reason why the Packers won the Superbowl inspite of all the injuries on both sides of the football. This year, the losses of Nick Collins and Cullen Jenkins really hurt the D. Tramon Williams was hurt early in the year as well, and that forced him to play off in coverage, which was never his game. Things changed, and you know the results. Despite all the yards given up, the D still leads the league in interceptions and turnovers.
I’m sad to see Reggie McKenzie leave GB, but I wish him the best in the future with Oakland. If he’s anything like Ted Thompson, you fans will have to endure a period of patience. He will build your team from the draft, inside and out. Unfortunately, Hugh Jackson gave up literally all your draft picks. That’s too bad, but I’m confident McKenzie will clean up that mess over time. If Winston Moss is set to become your Head Coach, again…I’m sad to see him go as well. He has been an assistant Head Coach in Green Bay for a LONG time, and he has seen a lot of success. He has experience with both the 4-3 and 3-4, so keep that in mind. If you think a struggling defense he helped coach that featured 2 less all pro’s from the year before reflects his coaching ability, again, the thought is short-sighted. I have a feeling Moss will go to Oakland, because he is ready to be a Head Coach.
Keep this in mind Raider fans: your next couple years will test your patience, but you will see success and a strong organization will be established in that time. Good luck in the future Raider fans!

never said I didn't care
just don’t share it. This guy has dedicated his life to football, and worked his way up the ranks of the Packers organization because he’s pretty good at his job. Everyone assumes he’s going to bring in someone currently on Green Bay’s staff, but he’s been exposed to other coaches and other coaching staffs in his time in Green Bay. He’s going to be linked to Moss, but that’s just being lazy right now…
Jackson remains a very good offensive coach, but he’s not McKenzie’s guy. It’s a bad deal for Hue, but it’s not entirely unexpected. Some of the wording in Hue’s contract may have had something to do with it, also, considering the circumstances under which it was signed (no general manager, really no organization at all between Hue and Al D.) Plus Hue had gotten a taste of personnel decisions a seemed to like it a little too much.
I doubt you see a new GM come in and retain the head coach very often, and when it happens it rarely goes well. See A.J. Smith and Marty Schottenheimer…

Cowher would be awesome
But no way in hell would he come to Oakland…. He certainly would be perfect for the job though… I think they should either go after an established, NFL head coach like Steve Mariucci, if he’d even be interested, or pluck a young fiery coordinator or college coach up who will fire this group up. They played with no urgency or fire the last month and they got that from Jackson, he was too laid back and pointed fingers… Horrible qualities in a head coach, especially for a team trying to get back to glory!

reggie mentioned his short list will not exclude coaches who dont have any experience, so were looking at a possible rookie coach again? Im still not getting much in terms of concrete answers or reasoning behind his first move.

I'd expected that a man that wields the headsman's axe so boldly
Would speak clearly about his vision of the future, what kind of team he wants to build, etc.
Should have had me do it
I work cheap. “We fired Hue, we’re moving on. Press conference over, now get the f**k out, you overpaid hacks!”
Reggie ate Herra for lunch. So Reggies gut feelings were that of herra being digested.
A lot of people don’t do pressers well. I know I wouldn’t but it is not really about his presser performance it is how Reggie is going to build a beast and when it when the winning resonates on the field the presser will be long forgotten. When Reggie proves what he is made of and the team is winning the west dominating the others in their division and making the playoffs, then those are the pressers I care about.

I felt they were straight forward
Reggie wanted to bring in HIS guy, and since Hue didn’t make the playoffs Mark basically said do what you want. Had Hue made the playoffs it might have been different, but the fact is that Reggie want to put his own people in place so he can build the team with his vision from day 1.
fair enough guys, but the question remains tho, given the team at full strength if the next guy cant get it done considering Hue was one game away with a team not at full strength and taking on multiple jobs, if we miss the playoffs again next year (I pray we wont) is that grounds to fire the new coach even if it is HIS GUY?

I'm so tired of moving on and cautious optimism
But there is nothing else for Raider Nation to say. So many people complained about needing a GM for years – now we have one. A vocal minority wanted Hue fired – now he’s gone. Bres probably next. No more excuses. This fresh start needs to be successful, because I’m tired of starting over and what excuse will we have if this fails?
Here’s hoping if it is a rebuild, it is a very short one followed by sustained success. But I feel a little uneasy about it all.

Me too, but we have to give a Reggie a chance to see what he can do. We’ll have a much better idea when he hires a head coach.
Hmmm...this is odd..
I only caught the last 5 minutes due to work. However, why did RM say “we” when refering to the Packers. He said something along the lines of “we played them and had a pretty good day against the defense.” If I was Mark Davis, at that very moment I would of cracked a joke (somewhat a joke) and said you are a Raider now, the Packers are in the past.
because when the packers played us he was still a packer.

Reggie talked about using his gut to make decisions
After watching this, my gut is that he has a pretty good idea about what he wants to do and can get his point across to people. Communication involves a lot more than verbal eloquence, and I think he’ll be able to make his point to coaches and players. If he is true to his word about looking for players who work together as a team in conjunction with his ability to evaluate football talent, I’m very happy with this hire.

Al Davis the Greatest Raider of all times... You will live forever in the hearts of true Raider fans...RIP
I Told You..
I was ripped by Raider Nation. I told you that Palmer would not only be a bust…but what a waste of draft picks you gave up to retain him. I also told you months ago. that HJ would be gone. Because I’m smart, or in the know? Nope…because for over a decade the Rai-Duh’s have been ill managaed by inexperienced coaches, lousy draft picks, an owner out of touch with reality…on and on. See you next year at this time, when you AGAIN fail to make the playoffs, fire yet another coach. But…at least you won’t have to worry about upper management selecting a player every other team regards as a Third Round pick in the First Round…CAUSE YOU DON"T GOTS ONE…bwahaha
F off
Al Davis the Greatest Raider of all times... You will live forever in the hearts of true Raider fans...RIP
Thanks for coming, and showing
you really do care.

Playoffs...
Did you make the playoffs? Hmm..no, and you lost two First Round picks, for someone who played nominally at best. WITH the offensive talent your team and it’;s fans alledge. Sounds like a bust to me. Hey…maybe you can get some revenge on Cincy for scamming you into obtaining CP. I bet PacMan Jones will be available after his debacle in the playoffs. He is a perfect fit for with the long list of felons, drug addicts, wife beaters your organization seems to lure…

But
A twelve year old can see how ill managed..how every year, Raider Nation is “lead” by “men” like the wife beater Tom Cable, or how you squander First Rounders…like hmmm DHB for example? How you sold the farm for CP…Maybe CP WAS the problem in Cincy. A rookie….with people questioning whether he would start if CP stayed in Cincy. Cincy..playoffs, starting a rookie QB, and still have their coach..and your draft picks. Seriously, what NFL caliber coach with a brain would agree to join your Daily Parade of Dysfunctionalism? Well..maybe someone desperate like Brad Childress??

This is pointless, but...
you obviously have no understanding of history, or football for that matter. Al Davis functioned as the primary personnel decision maker throughout all but three years of the Raiders history. Along with Ron Wolf, he built a monster of a team in the 70’s and 80’s winning three Super Bowls during that time. Unfortunately, Al Davis passed in October, and the Raiders finished the season without a true football operations side of the organization. In this vacuum, Hue Jackson orchestrated the trade for Carson Palmer, but it’s not like he had much of a choice. His team was 7-4 and on the cusp of a playoff berth. What they gave up to the Bengals was too much, but we can’t go back and undo that.
Incidentally, Hue Jackson was fired today, while we hired a protege of Ron Wolf to run the football operations for the Raiders. He had been with the Green Bay Packers pro personnel department since 1994, so he knows how champions are built. His long-time association with Green Bay adds legitimacy to the Raiders organization. How he runs the Raiders will be unlike anything the Raider Nation is accustomed to. He’s worked with top flight NFL coaches and Super Champion coaches, and he’ll set one up to succeed in Oakland, as well.
Finally, Darius Heyward-Bey had a very good season catching 64 passes for 975 yds in 2011. Of that draft class only Hakeem Nicks outperformed him in both categories…

Well said Brotha Transparent58
Seriously Raider Nation was asking for a GM for some time but Al couldn’t give it up it was like a marriage till death due us part. It is a shame he couldn’t still be here but the Raiders will operate on a whole new level having a gm calling the shots is a win win. Al Davis made the greatness of the Raiders and Now we can get back to to ALs vision. We all know all was a great master mind of the of many things but it comes a time when you have to hang the old hat up which Al refused to do. Unfortunately I believe Al was out of tune with today’s game a little bit a took to many tasks on his own. This will be the new generation RIP to our beloved owner but now Mark is at the helm and is fulfilling Als wishes in his way. I felt proud when Mark said he was not selling the team and he was going to carry on the tradition in the Davis family.
by raider.freak on Jan 10, 2012 5:33 PM PST up reply actions
I don't know that Al really lost touch, per se
but after Bruce Allen, he never trusted another personnel guy and all he had left were yes men who were unflinchingly loyal to him. He brought in Kiffin but soured on him in the same he soured on Shannahan. How dare any coach, let alone this young guy question his judgement?
Outside the nation, many would say the Raiders started going downhill when Ron Wolf left, and they’d have plenty of ammo to support those claims. Admitting as much doesn’t cheapen Al Davis’s impact on the game, you’ll have defenders and apologists deny that until the end of time…

Their defense was extremely baned up in that game though.
That wasn’t the #1 defense performing. Some of their #1 players weren’t even playing in the game.
Besides, they got into the post season. Thats all we need to do for our first step anyways, but no way he leaves Pitt imo.

But is that framework trying to win NOW
Or are we back to building again.
The concern I suppose I’m expressing is we have some high dollar veterans. Are we going to be dealing them and trying to build in this year’s draft? Or are we going to try and shore up our weaknesses and go for it now?

Also add on
a new coaching staff implementing new schemes. We know those take awhile for the players to get settled into.
depends on the coaching staff
If the guys Reggie brings in completely change the scheme, then yeah there will be some growing pains. Remember, though, we’re not dealing with High School kids who have only played the wishbone, here. Most of our players have played in various schemes throughout their careers. Seymour, Curry, McClain, and Wimbley have all played in a 3-4 at some point. Palmer played in Carroll’s West Coast offense at SC, and I’m sure most of the other players have seen variations of it in their careers. We still ran inside zone plays under Jackson in 2011…
And we have a full off-season to implement those changes…I’ll wait to see the staff fill out before I project how this team will perform.

People keep saying this
Nobody—nobody—rebuilds in the NFL. You don’t trade away guys because you can’t. You don’t “go young” because there’s a mix of experience on most every team. But mostly you don’t “rebuild” in a traditional sense because the money is fairly equal and everybody is trying to win now.
Everybody.
So
All of you watching this from work, did you actually get any work done today? Did the boss notice you were “pre-occupied”?
I'd say after the Super Bowl at the earliest.

Good day for the Raiders, as it turns out (and I was a big Hue fan—loved the playcalling).
Good future for the Raiders, too.
Watching Chronicle Live on tape right now, and the panel is giving both guys very high marks. Rightfully.
So much for the nonsense above, knocking our owner and GM.
yup. save the lip service as far as i'm concerned
they both shot from the hip. Hard to be critical of anything already, but count on the Nation… it’s amazing before any games are won or lost at moments like these when it gets dicey and the infighting becomes rampant! Awesome
""The massive Raider Nation is beyond doubt the sleaziest and rudest and most sinister mob of thugs and wackos ever assembled."--Hunter S. Thompson
"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and fuck -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get fucked. Someday, the Raiders will be strong again, and they will dip the ball in shit and shove it down the throats of the wholesome, white, heartland teams that pray together and don't deliver late hits." - George Carlin.
I doubt this is the case
everyone outside this board and other obvious Raider haters realize this will be an evolution of sorts. McKenzie will give his first coaching hire some leeway unless he turns out to be a complete dickbag that undercuts his coaching staff and the organization like Todd Haley or Josh McDeeznuts.
