Mike Silver on Mark Davis
What do you all think about what Mike Silver had to say about Mark Davis? If you haven't read it yet, here is the link: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ms-silver_oakland_raiders_hue_jackson_mark_davis_011112
I would personally like to know who the source is because I am not a fan of people who hide their identity when they call someone out. Mike Silver promised on Twitter to pummel McKenzie if Jackson was fired, but he chose instead to pummel Mark. Read why, and let me know what you think. Hey, let Silver know what you think too.

Mike Silver is obviously a friend of Hubris
Got the first interview and now this.
There is always a guy or two in the media that a coach is close too that comes out with some crap after someone gets shit canned.

I am not getting the Tommy Boy reference
Now if we are talking hair style, gotta go with Jim Carrey in Dumb & Dumber
the reference is for a goofy kid that never fit in
now he has his dads empire and goes crazy with it. Havent you seen the movie?
I am so angry about this
Marks father just passed away and this piece of shit goes and writes this garbage.

I just looked at the 2008 draft
there wasnt even a wr drafted in the first round. Donnie Avery was the first wr taken 2nd round 2nd pick. Al should have taken Marks advice in 2007. We would of had Calvin Johnson instead of you know who
who knows if its even true
Mike Silver obviously is friends with Hue and sat down and spoke to him, everyone knows Hue fucked up more things than just on the field.

Whatever
The story is so secondhand that we don’t even know the tone of any of it. If Mark Davis walked in and said, “Take a receiver” in ‘08, then that was pretty damn funny. As in, “you know, Pop, like the receiver we should have taken last year,” or as in, "like, you know Pop, the receiver that’s completely missing from our roster."
Good one, Mark. And who knows the tone in which his dad responded. And even it harsh, we have no idea of the context and the relationship.
Al could have said it in a total comical way too
words are just words. It depends who is reading the story and narrating it
excellent point

As bad as it gets
Oz, I’m glad you’re on this one. And thanks for the post, Campbell 510.
I read this today and immediately wrote to Silver—a writer I generally like.
What I told him is what I’ll say here:
This is an incredibly petty piece that he’ll someday regret as much as anything he’s written—regret if he has the ability for any kind of self-examination, at least. That Yahoo’s promoting it on their front page should humiliate him even more—it’s there because it’s cheap, salacious gossip. Gee whiz, Mike, you managed to trump the latest Kardashian story. Should be a very proud moment in your career.
But it’s worse than just petty and small. Given his connection with Hue, given the way he promoted and backed Hue, this is obviously just a bitter hit piece for his patron. So it’s unprofessional. And more still: it’s all premised on a single story that he only has second-handedly. And worst of all: it’s just incredibly cruel. I mean as cruel as any profile you’ll read by a major writer this year about a blameless and innocent person (Davis).
Oz’s anger above is understandable. This is the very worst kind of journalism. Not because it’s anti-Raiders or because it’s anti-Mark Davis. It’s the very worst kind of journalism because it’s horribly sourced, petty, cruel, speculative in the worst possible ways, and because ultimately it adds absolutely nothing to what we know about the situation or about Davis beyond the bitter psychobabble that Mike Silver decided to spew out and call a story.
Just unbelievably bad in every possible way. And unbelievably unethical and unfair.

Thanks Noon and very well said
As you say This isn’t about being Anti-Raiders or Anti-Mark Davis this is just about being a decent human being. Attacking a mans relationship with his father like this on a platform you are given is just disgusting and I would be just as horrified if it was about another team in the league.
I contacted Mike on twitter today and from his response he is certainly saying that he is fine with it at this stage but i can’t see any way that any human being with any level of conscience can not at least at some point in the near future can not see that this was nothing but a viscous personal attack that goes beyond sports and is so unbiased it is ludicrous and I would bet that Mike Silver has never even met Mark and I think it is fair to assume that his ‘source’ is none other than Hubris F Jackson.

Just so we get this straight
I’m not the blogger formerly known as noontide. I’m RLangford, not RichLangford—and I got here first with the name by the way.
Just letting you know.

but hubris was in baltimore in 08
how would he have know what was said and known what the reactions in the room were? i dont think it was Hue Oz
It seems like way too much of a coincidence to me that the day after he wrote the article about the sit down with Hue where they spoke about him being fired he comes our with this
The story about 08 is something that could have easily been recanted to Hue during his time in Oakland and taken out of context.

silver
this nothing but opinion, not journalism.Others have stated that Mark came off very well at the presser. this is sour grapes buy a friend of Jackson….
“So, in my opinion, Davis did what many bosses do when they feel threatened by someone with a superior skill set and an aversion to brown-nosing: He kneecapped Jackson. And I suspect that the owner will encourage McKenzie to clean out as many people on the football side of the building as he can, if only to start fresh with a new crop of employees who don’t have visceral images of his inglorious past.”
direct quote……in my opinion…well Mr. Silver here in the Nation I dare say…your opinion dont mean squat

I think the response to Silver should be:
Dear Mike,
This article is horseshit. You got something? Prove it.
All my best,
Rusty
Don't shoot, I'm a man.
Funny how the damning info
the Tommy Boy thing and the “Al is rolling over in his grave” quote are both anonymous (read: Silver pulled out of his ass).
Here’s the thing-
1. I hope to all hell that Mark Davis doesn’t have the same draft philosophy as Al Davis.
2. Apparently McKenzie is the first GM ever to bring in his own guy as coach.
3. A team takes on the personality of it’s coach. Hue was great for 3 quarters of the season., but in crunch time. . .
4. I have been wishing for a GM for a decade now. I hope he isn’t going to be running the team like Al would. It’s time to win.
And I'm not spitting on the man's grave-
I think most of us can agree Al wasn’t the best drafter or evaluator of talent. At least in the first round.
So on the whole
you’re saying, “Look Silver, even if you’re right, you’re still drawing the wrong conclusions in your horseshit piece.”
For a much better piece
See Scott Ostler’s. He also begins with a story:

That link failed
but cutting and pasting the whole thing will work.
Mike Florio offers a good perspective on this too
"Weakness on both sides is, as we know, the motto of all quarrels." -Voltaire
Eh
Just another article. I’ve read good, cautiously optimistic, and terrible articles all year full of seemingly half truths on all sides. The same could be said of every team that has suffered the cellar the last decade. In the end, time will prove him correct or wrong. McKenzie could be either really awesome or fail horribly (although Matt Millen really set the bar low on that end). Mark doesn’t seem like a good football guy, and his dad never shied away from his feelings. I believe some of those war stories. I do agree though, insulting the man is just repugnant. Disagree with the decision and stay neutral, that is your job. Mark is also now a full time owner, he will have enough on his plate for the years to come. Mediots, bleh.

I was disgusted...
and I’m a HUGE Mike Silver fan, being a Cal alum and Bay Area sports nut.
I thought it was completely out of line, a total hack job. I don’t care you “inside” you are, you can’t know the intimate details about a father and son’s relationship to which Silver claims to be privy. I mean this type of article seems beneath him, but I guess it’s not. I’m severely disappointed – not sure what else I can say.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
I'm a big Silver fan too
he’s usually on point with his writings. This artcile seems to be a little petty, but that’s only becuase he (as well as others) see that we let go of a coach who had a nice upside. I just hope he’s not right. I’ve seen Silver be right about a few things over the years and if Mark is as big a nincompoop (Tommy Boy) as he portrays him to be, then the franchise is in serious trouble.
You just got Tysoned!!!!!!
But why does that matter?
Mark is the owner. McKenzie is the GM. Georgia Frontiere was an idiot, but she was hands off and the Rams won.
AD wasnt hands off
who’s to say Mark won’t be either??
You just got Tysoned!!!!!!
It might matter
In that Mark only interviewed one person for the position of job. Wolf told him, “Hire Reggie”, and Mark said, “Okie dokie.” And having done so, Mark retreats back to wherever he hides.
Why cast it in negative terms? Mark Davis took the advice of two of the best football minds out there: Madden & Wolf
Would you rather have a cocky Owner who imposes his ignorance on the franchise or someone who knows his limitations and defers to trusted experts?

I'd
Rather have an owner that’s willing to interview multiple candidates, particularly experienced ones, to get the most qualified one rather than just snatch somebody up who’s convenient so he doesn’t have to be bothered with it anymore.
Amy Trask
and not Hue would fit his Gladiator analogy better. But Mark seems to have a great working relationship with Amy. Silver’s speculative journalism makes me sick. It all depends on Mark wanting people to respect his football opinion. Seems like he doesn’t care too much about that image. He admits he is “not a football guy.”
Mike Silver has a point!
however everyone knows when a new gm comes in they want thier guy! is Eric MAngini a better coach than Shumur? damn Right!. Gm’s usually have huge power trips!
That article is disgusting
And while I don’t agree with Jason Whitlock of Fox Sports very often, his article today was on point. Mike Silver made his name bashing Al Davis and now he’s got to try and start a new rivalry with Mark. Funny thing is, I don’t think Mark will give a rat’s ass because everyone else in the world understands that the choices he has made thus far are good for the organization.
Mike Silver will be losing his ‘inside informants’ and it pisses him off. Simple as that.
