Oakland Raiders Coaching Search Adds a Disturbing Name
It won't come as any surprise that every employed by the Packers is a possible candidate in Oakland. This is the first rumor I've heard involve defensive coordinator Dom Capers though.
LaCanfora adds in print that he heard through a league source the plans of Capers' interview. Of all the people mentioned to date, Capers is my least favorite. He has had some tremendous success as a defensive coordinator, but he has a horrible track record as a head coach.
In eight seasons as a head coach Capers has had over a .500 record one time. The one time was in his second season as a coach in 1996 with the Panthers. That team ultimately lost to the Packers in the NFC Championship game.
Capers is one coach that doesn't need to be retread. I'd prefer someone young, energetic, hungry and raw over Capers. We'll see what happens. I'd be surprised if Capers winds up with this job.

I agree we need someone young and energetic, someone that the players can relate to, a coach that will listen, a coach that would install the 4 D’s ( discipline – desire – dedication – determination ) not just for a pay check. Then we will have a championship team just WIN BABY! !!!!!!

Rich Gannon said on Sirius NFL Radio today that he believes the Oakland job is the one job that could pull Jon Gruden from the broadcasting booth. He also stated that Madden has a great relationship with Jon Gruden and could be the one to get him to come back to Oakland.

I can't see this happening
The main reason Gruden was shipped out in the first place was that he wanted final roster say and more personnel input. I don’t see McKenzie giving this up.

Yeah that is the one thing that makes me think it is still a little bit of a long shot
but I think comments like this from Gannon definitely confirm that it is not impossible to think he might come back.
I also think there could be some compromise, I think Al used to have total and absolute say on the roster as with many things where as I am sure that Mike McCarthy has a fair input in green bay.

Your right, at the time reported... in 2001. I do agree with you that history does repeat itself, however, with that being said history is not relevant to this situation.
You can point your hatin finger at any cause your heart dissires but the reality is that al Davis was the primary cause of issues. Sure gruden still wont have draft power but it’s not the concern it was 10 years ago. Unlike Davis’s last few decades, mckennie has a infamous eye for talent… All I’m sayin is, you can disagree with peoples opinions, but hating multiple times on the same situation on different blogs, that’s lame.

McKenzie will give that up because that's how the Packers are run too. Al picked the DC or the D scheme. He always had.
Al was the DC back then too. Chucky probably wanted less of that. And less involvement of him in the draft room and FA.
The RaiderLaker
McKenzie has said he will let his Hand picked HC bring his staff.
Gruden can be very possible.
Gruden (HC) and Moss (DC/AHC) would be a step up over anything we have had in a long time.

We have to remember
Capers’ record as a coach reflects his time with the expansion Panthers, as he was their first coach ever and they weren’t a particularly good team. You will also find that Tom Coughlin’s overall record reflects the Jaguars’ initial mediocrity as well though he has gone on to better things with the Giants.
Capers led the Panthers to the NFC championship game in their second year OF EXISTENCE in 1996 which is really something for any coach to hang their hat on, but after that the team really fell off the map. We can’t really judge Capers by his record considering the teams he was the coach of (expansion Panthers, expansion Texans who were beyond awful in their early years). He was very successful as the defensive coordinator of the Steelers in the early 90’s and of the current Packers. I agree that he is more well suited to a coordinator position, but we can’t just say he can’t be a head coach when he’s only coached terrible expansion teams.

Dom Capers is a good coach
But your record would suck too if you were the first ever coaches of the Panthers AND the Texans. Houston is a perennial playoff contender under Kubiak and Wade Phillips but they were a mess when they first started up and that’s not really on Capers- it’s just the nature of building a football team completely from scratch. It does say a lot about Capers that he was trusted to coach brand new teams on two separate occasions.
With that being said, both teams went on to greater success after Capers left, but Capers did an admirable job considering the circumstances he was given. I don’t know that he’s the right choice for the Raiders HC job but it would be unwise to simply dismiss the idea out of hand.
These are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others. -Groucho Marx
It is a fair point about the expansion teams, but he was given enough time to show progress and he did not.
In fact, his last year with both teams were his worst. That is not a good sign. Also, as you pointed to, both teams had dramatically better records the year after he was canned.

I like Capers fine as a DC
But he’s had his chances as a HC and it hasn’t been pretty. If we’re going to fire Hue after going 8-8 in his only season as a HC I don’t want to go to a guy with a career HC winning percentage of .375.
Though I understand those teams weren’t great to begin with and it wasn’t an easy job, but I’d still rather go with a newbie than a HC that had that record after 8 seasons.

Gruden says he won’t discuss the Irish stew
December 04, 2001|David Bush
Though never saying point blank that he has no interest in the Notre Dame coaching job, Raiders coach Jon Gruden yesterday repeated he has had no contact with the school and that he is happy where he is.
“The last thing I want to do is speculate. I love it here. I love this team.

Gruden deserves to keep job
January 21, 2002|By David Steele
ONE OF sports’ most time-honored axioms is to never let a game come down to an official’s call. The same should go for a coach’s job.
But could it happen to Jon Gruden? Could referee Walt Coleman’s brainlock in the snow of Foxboro not only end the Raiders’ season prematurely, but Gruden’s tenure as well?
The issue is relevant because the Raiders’ head coach, now officially a lame duck, has become linked to yet another job, this time in Tampa. Reports are that Al Davis is unhappy about the late-season collapse and puts part of the blame on the fact that it took place right about the time the rumors about Notre Dame and other openings began to swirl around Gruden. Furthermore, Davis reportedly wouldn’t be against cutting a deal to let Gruden go with a year left on his contract, in return for compensation.

Gruden good as gone? / Agent says coach won’t be with Raiders after ’02
January 22, 2002|By Ira Miller, Chronicle Staff Writer
Jon Gruden gave the Raiders a stark choice yesterday: They can let him out of his contract now, and probably get draft choices as compensation from another NFL team that wants him as their coach — the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Or, they can keep him around for a lame-duck year, and wouldn’t that be fun? Then Gruden would leave the Raiders after the 2002 season when his contract expires, and they would get nothing in return.
Those are two lousy choices for the Raiders, but that’s all they have.

Agent says Gruden won’t re-sign with Raiders
January 23, 2002|By David Bush
A Raiders representative said the team hoped to have Jon Gruden coaching beyond 2002, but his agent last night reiterated that Gruden would not sign another contract with the team.
“Jon Gruden will not sign another contract with the Raiders,” agent Bob LaMonte told The Chronicle again last night. “This is not about leverage. There is no agenda here. He will honor his contract (which runs through 2002), and that’s it.”
Raiders senior assistant Bruce Allen said the Raiders have not ruled out Gruden’s lasting beyond 2002, despite LaMonte’s comments. “Jon’s status has been addressed every year since his rookie season,” Allen said. “We anticipate Jon will be here for years to come.”
Faced with LaMonte’s ultimatum and the fact that Gruden is at the top of Tampa Bay’s wish list, the Raiders might want to let Gruden go early in return for some compensation from the Bucs. “I have no comment on that,” LaMonte said.
“That’s up to the Raiders, and we have not heard from them.”

Reaction to Gruden loss is split across the bay
February 19, 2002|Charles Burress, Pamela J. Podger, Chronicle Staff Writers
But after Davis gave his explanation of Gruden’s departure and said it was Gruden’s choice, Ricardo said he appreciated Davis’ apparent willingness to let Gruden pursue job offers.
Opinion was divided over whether the Raiders got a good deal for letting Gruden go — two first-round draft picks and two second-round picks, plus $8 million.
“It’s not enough — you can’t replace that guy,” Kugler said.
But Audelo said it “seems like a good deal for Raiders,” and Ricardo said Davis “looks like he won the Lotto. I think they got a hell of deal. They were going to lose Jon Gruden anyway” when his Raiders contract expired at the end of the 2002 season.

Raiders’ players must accept burden
March 27, 2002|David Steele
They have to close the door on Jon Gruden and open it to Bill Callahan, and the sooner the better. The process, clearly, is in full swing, with tales now emerging of locker-room dissension in Gruden’s final days and the harmony that supposedly will replace it.
Yes, Brown acknowledged, last season ended with significant (albeit unnamed) players who "just could not function with Gruden, no matter what was tried, no matter what was said to the players or what was said to the coach. . . . We had guys going into the game (saying), ’I’m gonna kill this guy.’ " And no, there’s no hint that players — newcomers or holdovers — are showing up this week in that frame of mind about Callahan, even though he, Brown said, “is probably even more intense than Gruden is. It just comes off in a totally different way.”
When all the comparisons are done, however, Brown figures that the credit or blame for how the Raiders perform after Gruden’s contentious exit should fall on the players.
It probably won’t — in some corners, Gruden will get credit for putting together the pieces of a champion or blame for sowing the seeds for collapse by creating the sideshow of his departure.

No going back for Gruden / Coach won’t even utter word ‘Raiders’
January 10, 2003|Brian Murphy, Chronicle Staff Writer
In a conference call with Bay Area reporters on Wednesday, Gruden did not mention the Raiders or Oakland by name, instead answering multiple Raiders- oriented questions by referring to “their team” and “my previous employment.” Pressed on Thursday in a phone interview with The Chronicle, Gruden said he’s moving on out of respect — to both the Raiders, and to his NFC South champion Bucs.
Gruden did admit to a personal phone call to NFL MVP Rich Gannon to congratulate the quarterback with whom he “grinded” — the exalted Gruden verb — long hours of film study and offensive philosophy in their years as Raiders together..
“I did talk to Rich Gannon,” Gruden said. “It’s a great honor for him . . . but I don’t really want to talk now about personal and private things.”
Then, as Gruden soared into the region’s consciousness with his combination of boyish good looks, manic, theatrical sideline antics and Raiders teams that threatened to return to the Super Bowl, it all fell apart between Gruden and Davis.
Gruden got a five-year, $17.5 million contract, a team knocking on the Super Bowl door, and a life in the town where his parents, 49ers regional scout Jim and retired schoolteacher Kathy, have lived for 20 years.
“To be down here, where my family has lived the last 20 years, it means a lot to me, personally. It has impact, and deep mean-ing, and that says something for a shallow individual such as myself.”
Last year, the Bucs finished 26th in total yards, enough to get head coach Tony Dungy fired. Gruden’s first year saw the team only finish 24th in total yards. But don’t burden Gruden with those numbers.

Yes...Al Was Pissed At 2 Things:
1st that a contract was on the table for a month and Gruden never even picked it up while all those rumors of him entertaini9ng other job offers were going UN-challenged…He refused to deny it…
2nd the season ending collapse and apparent loss of the locker room and alienation of his players…
Than Al Davis being pissed picked up the contract and withheld it so Gruden went running around to the "Mediot"s crying that he didn’t have a contract offer on the table…
But I forgot to post this:
Further, it is believed, Gruden wanted language in his contract explicitly allowing him to hire and fire all the assistant coaches and to have some measure of control in player personnel decisions. He also wanted the Raiders, whose loose-knit organizational structure, with everyone reporting to Davis, is a throwback to a much simpler time in pro football, to modernize and restructure. All those things are standard in most head-coaching contracts.
Although Gruden has made it a point never to criticize the Raiders in public, those who know him have heard him often privately complain about the way things were done in the organization, almost to a point of belittlement at times. And, although he publicly never complained about his contract or made a spectacle of seeking more money, he felt that Davis really has not appreciated what he did in turning around the image of the team.
As you can see from this he was belligerent and all about himself!!!

The internal structure issues is something that many fans have been calling for for years and is now being put in place
Well I don’t think it is unfair for Gruden who had done a brilliant job up to that point to request some of the power that is no more than standard in the NFL and it is also not unfair for Al to refuse being is that it was his franchise to run as he wished.
It was a very unfortunate situation and as I said fault on both sides for this very sad break up of which both sides have expressed some regret especially Chucky who has said many times how much he loves the Raiders and respects AL and still refers to the Raiders as ‘we’ on television.

Every coach should he allowed to hire his assistants. Arguing he shouldnt have been allowed to negotiate that into his contract seems crazy to me
We all know Al Davis forced players on his coaches and that simply doesn’t turn out well most times. He was trying to stop that from happening and if not he was willing to leave. I hold no ill will towards him for that. As for him losing the locker room at the end, yeah the contract shit and knowing your coach wants out will do that to anybody. He did a great job for us and was only obligated to finish his contract which he would have done. I see nothing that he did as pissing on the shield and the very fact that his criticisms were nothing but hearsay and not publicly said says more to me than he had complaints. We all have complained about our bosses at some point and most the time its probably valid. He worked under the most dominating owner in professional sports, even George Steinbrenner gave more control to his managers than Al gave to his coaches. The problems with Gruden were directly related to his relationship with an owner not alive anymore. I loved Al but I refuse to act like every decision he made was correct, plus we got both arms and both legs from Rampage in the deal for him. Had we used the compensation wiser we would have been in a far better position because of the way Gruden ended up leaving us.

Nice...You Forgot To Address The ""to modernize and restructure"....
There’s a very simple reality here if you look…We all knew beyond a reasonable doubt that Al Davis was never going to relinquish his authority and control of his team to anyone and especially NOT a “HC”!!!
Bruce Allen would have been a much more likely candidate for that than Gurden don’t you think???
So the very simple reality is that these demands were just a wedge that could be driven between ownership/management and the coaches…Given to the "Mediot"s to run with so Gurden looks the part of the “Golden Boy” who’s being taken advantage of…
Just look at it with a reasoning mind and forget what other teams do…This was the Al Davis Raiders and change did not come until that day was passed!!!

i addressed it panty i just didnt repeat the words u used
He was negotiating the right to hire his own staff and have authority in specific instances to cut ties with players he extremely dissaproved of. Allowing him those two things would be modernizing and restructuring the environment. No where was he demanding Al Davis hire a GM, it was just asking for things that any coach with his success deserved to get. We would be in a far better place as an organization if Al had agreed to those two fairly simple requirements to retain him as head coach and in all likeliness would have had another championship under our belt.

However I still don’t think Gruden was out of line for not wanting to work in a system like that. I don’t believe informing the team he will leave at the end of his contract if he can’t have more say in personal over a year early allowing the team a chance for extreme compensation for him leaving is shitting on them. You do though and that’s simply just an irreconcilable difference of opinion between u and me. I respect your loyalty even if I don’t agree with your stance.

LoL!!!….Some take offense to total different issues that others…Like “OzRaider” hating on Hue?….For What?
But it does go a little deeper than you acknowledged…His agent posted Gruden will never sign again and pushed the trade issues…It was a very bitter ending with the players as well and NOT just with ownership…
Than the reports of player animosity also surfacing in “TB”…This looks to be a pattern…
I didn’t see this with either Cable of Hue…Turner of Callahan either…Only Gruden n Shell II come to mind…Perhaps Lance???

LoL!!!...One Season As "HC" Is The "For What"??...
Just how much damage could he have really done???
The “For What” is in regards to relative effect…The effects of losing Gruden were far reaching down to this very day as evidenced in yours and others posting now and threw time….Just how far reaching do you suppose the loss of Hue will be…Who will be talking next season and for 10 decades to come???
As you should be able to see the “For What” is a huge contrast….One took away of “SB” trophy while the other posted 8-n-8 and failed to make the "PO"s due basically to his “DC” whom he failed to kick in the ass…I doubt there’s any comparison???
"Tebowphobe"!!!
Furthermore The Ability To Delete Players From His Roster Is To Have "Veto" Power Ove Al's Draft!!!
Gruden knew better than to demand that he preside over the draft so he approached it in this manner…So if Al drafted a player he didn’t like (Ricky Dudley) he could “Veto” that choice!!!…
In your wildest dreams do you see Al Davis giving him that???

I dont think it should matter if Al wouldnt have given it, Jon could no longer function without it
Ricky Dudley absolutely should have been cut and I would not have been against giving Gruden the authority to do it. If a coach can’t work with a player he shouldn’t be forced to like that, he wasn’t demanding the rights to drafting players. He just wanted the right to get rid of players if they didn’t work out which Al also wouldn’t give. AL refused to give those things to Gruden so he informed them plenty ahead of time he would not resign then so that they could make a move early and get compensation. If Al had given it to him he would have stayed, it was up to Al and he said no so Jon had the right to say no to signing another contract.

Well I'm So Glad You Know After All These Years Exactly Waht It Was That He Really Wanted???
Now on what do you base that premise?…State your hard evidence so I can view it prior to just accepting it as fact simply because it came for you?
I have supplied ample testimony that he did in fact demand authority over his roster!!!…More than what he had which was to decide what player he played where and how many snaps they got…
Now your turn!!!
"Tebowphobe"!!!
this is the evidence you posted
Further, it is believed, Gruden wanted language in his contract explicitly allowing him to hire and fire all the assistant coaches and to have some measure of control in player personnel decisions.
Nothing you have posted says in anyway that he demanded full authority over the roster just ‘some measure of control’ which is completely different to ‘full authority’
At best its something that is left to interpretation and far from a solid basis of your hatred. The sad reality is that we probably would have had the same issue with any head coach that became successful but unfortunately after Chucky left we never found anyone good enough to find out.

You forgot the third reason Al was pissed...
that Gruden was getting all of the credit for the Raiders resurrection at the time.
The plain fact of the matter is that Gruden was sick of being under Al’s thumb and that Al always wanted his coaches under it.
It was also why we were unable to get the best coaches to even interview with us.
So we ended up with Joe Bugel, Mike White, Art Shell (the bed and breakfast version) Bill Callahan, Lance Kiffin and Hue Jackson in addition to Gruden.
Also you’d need to hate on every coach that passed up the Raider HC job for the same reasons Gruden left and that’s a lot of coaches.
Good coaches gone to other jobs because of Al’s heavy hand.
I hated it, but I don’t fault Gruden for leaving at all, the Raiders head coaching job (as it was until now) was a chance for a young guy to get his shot at being a head coach and prove himself and then (after proving himself) have the power to move on to a head coaching job that offered more freedom, money and latitude to implement their own plan.
All the things the Raiders job didn’t offer.
If Gruden comes back now it will because he’ll to be able to hire his own staff, implement his own plan and finish the job he never got the chance to in Oakland!

you can tell by the way he talks about Tampa compared to Oakland that he regretted leaving
He never even sounds remotely happy when talking about that Super Bowl. I would love to have him back. Its bullshit to hate the man so much simply because after considerable success he could no longer work with Al Davis. He did not leave us high and dry and preferred leaving us a year early to help the team more with getting such extravagant compensation for him. If he wanted to he could have simply resigned and went to Tampa leaving us with nothing, he has been nothing but respectful to us publicly and whatever he said privately was just that, private. He showed real class by not speaking publicly about his differences, and even more by continuously showing obvious love for us.

You think Barret Robbins had money on Tampa?
The guy was out of his mind and on a bender. That fucked up the blocking schemes and cast a pall over the whole game for us.
It also didn’t help that Gruden knew all of our first 30plays in order because Callahan wasn’t smart enough to change them and that Gruden knew Rich Gannons tendencies so well too.
I was very worried about that game before it happened for all those reasons except Robbins, he was a surprise.
I didn’t even leave the house to go to any SB party because of the bad feeling I had about facing Gruden so soon after he left here.

It ain't McKenzie!!!
Might as well forget about the Raiders getting a good coach. The Raiders will interview assistant and retread coaches only. Why? because Mark ain’t paying for a good coach. There’s going to be assistant coaches around the league making more money than the Raiders next coach. I’ll bet anybody, that McKenzie is the lowest paid GM in the league. That’s why he was brought in. Mark didn’t even interview other qualified Gm’s, because they cost to much when it comes to Mark .
Apparently, McKenzie has a budget to work with, that’s why were seeing the names we’re seeing. Interview a coach like Capers with a 48-80 record? what the hell for? because he’ll come cheap, that’s why. raiders just should have kept Jackson if their going to be cheap.
Everybody getting excited about a good coach? Not while a non football man like mark is running the show cutting corners. My guess is, the new coaches salary will be a million or less a year. This surely isn’t what McKenzie meant by his guy? If it is, he stinks as well. It’s not hard to figure out, if you listened to mark bitch about money, in a interview after the press conference. Not to mention, McKenzie said he’s looking for players on the cheap.
So what available 'good' coaches that are out there do you think we should be interviewing that we are not?
McKenzie was the only man interviewed because he was highly recommended by John Madden and Ron Wolf what is the point of wasting other peoples time.

Not sure where you have been but we don’t have any draft choices so looking for players on the cheap is all we have available we also are up against the cap.
SEEMS TO ME getting excited and being optimistic is far superior to being a wet blanket and quoting all gloom and doom. Your welcome to interpret the last several days events in any manner you choose and quite frankly after the last 10 years who could blame you.

Watch and see guy. Sure it’s speculation, it all is at this point. It’s just what I took away from the press conference.
McKenzie said he won’t be looking at big name free agent’s, in a year when perhaps he should? because of no high draft picks. I’m also speculating he’s talking about he’s own free agents like Bush and Branch, who are the fabric of this football team.

please, just bring chuckie back. he never should have left.the raiders would probably have as many super bowl wins as anyone if he had’nt
Dom is a fine coordinator, but I wouldn’t want him as a head coach. He won’t leave Green Bay just to be a coordinator. Its going to be head coach or no Dom. I’d rather not have Dom. I’m fine with making Philbin head coach and Moss defensive coordinator. But pleae leave Al Saunders as offensive coordinator
I guess I'm alone on this but the guy is respected around the league and if he was to be hired as HC he would be coming into the best possible scenario he's ever come into.
He would be walking into a team a middle of the road defense away from being a playoff team and a possible immediate AFC West title contender. He is the best possible candidate and I think he deserves another chance at being a head coach after all he’s done over the years as a DC. I am all in on the Dom for Raiders HC.

dom capers knows the 3-4, winston does to especially in the lb area. he could teach more to winston and help him as a d c but we would have to have a strong oc that can use our players to be explosive . hiring a jon gruden, he would want more power or control of things. reggie has said mark gave him control of the raiders hire/fire etc. would gruden really be a good fit even if madden has spoke highly of him.

Lets take a second.
There has been no confirmation from the Raiders about any of the so-called potential candidates. I wouldn’t be thrilled if it turned out to be Capers, I admit. but look closely, every guy on that “potential candidates list” is on the Packers coaching staff.. Todd Bowles came out of left field. That felt like the Rooney Rule obligation, to me anyway.I really don’t believe McKenzie is just going to import as many coaches from GB as he can get. He worked for the Packers for 18 years, that is true, but I don’t think he will limit his coaching search to their staff only. And if you take what he said in the presser to heart, he wants a guy with HC experience.Ok. If true, that eliminates Moss, Philbin, and Darren Perry. Capers would be the only member of the Packers staff with HC experience. Which may be why his name turned up. Both stints with expansion teams. I personally think with the Raiders’ current situation, someone with HC experience is probably a good idea. We shall see what happens this week.
Just a thought.
Taking into consideration what I said previously about someone with HC experience, I think you have to look at who is out there as far as experienced HC’s. As well as guys from GB. I wouldn’t be surprised if McKenzie tries to line up interviews with a guy like Gruden or Jeff Fisher. Cowher might be a stretch. But if we want to play the Packers card, would Mike Holmgren be out of the question? McKenzie worked with him in GB, he is from the Bay Area. Everyone though he was holding out for the 49ers job when he left Seattle, but it never happened.
Holmgren could have a GM slash coaching job if he wanted it with full control.
Why would he take anything less? And he has done it before. He don’t want to coach, especially for somebody else. I don’t even think Holmgren would take the Raiders GM job even if he was available, let alone coaching the team.

Rich Gannon as coach
Rich was a great player. I think he would be a great coach. Ay least an Offensive Coordinator.
Most of Raider Nation still loves Chucky
This would be huge for Oakland if this could happen. Let’s be realistic, Al Davis was very hard to work for. Al and Gruden eventually drove each other crazy. But everyone knows Gruden did a great job in Oakland. He did deserve better. When it looked like things weren’t going to work out, both sides agreed to part ways.
Yes Callahan got the Raiders to the Super Bowl in 2002, but it was Gruden who put that team together piece by piece.
Tampa Bay was stuck until Gruden got there to pull them over the hump. He got a crap QB Brad Johnson to play out of his mind and an elite defense to carry the team to a SB championship.
We all know where Oakland went after Gruden left. Total chaos. 10 years later, can it be Gruden who comes back to where he began and finish a job he started? He’s got a lot of talent on offense. I also have the utmost confidence in Gruden to fix our defense.
