Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Lets Be Realistic...

To start let me say that i would love to have Gruden back as the coach. Even after ditching us for Tampa Bay i can't help but still like the guy. However, I don't think anybody in the raider nation should get there hopes up on him returning to Oakland. He has a a nice relaxing job as a TV analyst in which he recently signed a new contract. Secondly, I think that even if he had interest in the job, I believe that Mckenzie wants a new fresh start. I also believe that he wants to fins coaches and players that fit his mold. Thats why he got rid of Hue. I think Mckenzie has his heart set on picking up one the GB coordinators or position coaches. i think the only reason were interviewing the miami guy is to keep us bust until GB loses. Again i would love to have Gruden back and he would be my first choice. BUt realistically i don't see it ever happening.

The game is a business.

If Reggie and Mark get the impression that Gruden would draw more fans (And obviously win) then they might try for him.

I'm in

As long as Gruden still has the fire to coach, wants more than anything to prove people wrong, (that he only won the SB with Dungy’s team) feels that his job here was left unfinished and that he owes Oakland a Super Bowl!…I want him!

and until someone else is hired, I’ll pimp him along with ya!

Watching the SF-NO game...

And I’m just pissed that we never even had a chance at hiring either of those very good coaches.

I sure hope that McKenzie makes the right hire, because a bad choice can really set us back for years…

Meh

I don’t know; he didn’t impress much in Tampa. I don’t know that he is capable of really building, but he certainly did a great job with an inherited team there, and with what he was given with us. I say ‘given’, because he didn’t have a say in the roster and such, as he did later.

It was with that control that he flopped…

Not what I recall...

I remember that he was seriously considering the job, and about ready to take it when he was in Dallas, and was advised not to because of the situation that he would be in, i.e., not being able to hire his own staff, not having much input into personnel, and having to work within the restraints of what Al Davis wanted to do.

At that point, he reconsidered, and took the New Orleans job a year later.

We never had a chance at Harbaugh, because he knew what he would, and more importantly would not, be able to do. He took a team with no more talent than the Raiders and turned them completely around. It is so frigging aggravating to see that on the other side of the bay, knowing that it could have been us that took that step…

Al Davis actually met with Sean Payton a few years back about becoming their head coach but never offered him the job.

Payton actually remembers their encounter fondly. Harbaugh was actually an assistant under Callahan when he was our coach. The problem is Al always going with his gut over the sensible choice, hence the motto “trust the players, not the plays called.” Here is an excerpt from Sean Payton’s book.

Another story: When Payton was an assistant coach for the Dallas Cowboys, he flew to California to interview for the head coaching job with the Oakland Raiders.

Owner Al Davis did the interviewing and wore his traditional black sweatsuit.

“Al is an extremely talented football guy. Few owners who interview can really talk about a defensive front, team travel and the salary cap,” Payton said. “He can hit on all these topics, and this was my first interview as head coach. It was 2003, and I was going to meet Al Davis.”

Payton, who had been in the NFL only about five years, said he was really nervous.

“I walked into the bathroom, and I took three deep breaths,” Payton said. “I said: ‘I belong here. I belong here. I belong here.’”

The interview was heading late into the evening, and both were hungry.

“You like cheeseburgers?” Davis said.

“Of course I do,” Payton said.

Davis then asked his assistant to run to McDonald’s to get some cheeseburgers and — get this — coleslaw.

“The assistant says, ‘Mr. Davis, McDonald’s doesn’t have cole slaw,” Payton remembers. “But Al wanted his cole slaw, so the assistant had to figure out what to do.”

A little while later, the assistant returns with the food.

“So we’re sitting there — mind you, it’s about 11 p.m. — eating McDonald’s cheeseburgers and cole slaw from KFC,” Payton said. “You know what a cold cheeseburger tastes like?”

Payton turned the job down, eventually becoming head coach of the Saints in 2006, defending Super Bowl champs and now an author.

And both turned it down...

That’s the point; we weren’t able to hire good coaches because of the system at that time. It appears that will change, but perception is reality, and if coaches still believe that they will not be able to have the freedoms that they can have elsewhere…

I am sitting here Watching the 49ers win

I wonder if we would consider there DC. I knew we didn’t have the best QB in the AFC west but after todays game I am not sure we have the best QB in the Bay . Alex Smith showed up today

by Micheal Y on Jan 14, 2012 5:17 PM PST reply actions

....put Alex Smith sitting on the couch

with no chemestry with our WR’s, with no training camp or knowledge of the playbook and ask him to score more than 28 points in at least 5 games, interesting fact, the games we lost the other team scored at least 28 points, interesting fact, 8 of Carsons INTs came when the team was down at least 21 points, you guys really dont understand the complexity of the position, you think they can come in and be Montana, he never even had a consistent team. I wouldve wanted to see Jason play without DMC, with the HUGE decline of the O-Line not only in the pass blocking, but in the run blocking too, without Moore or Ford, like Ive said since the day of the trade, support your players

by RaiderPride20 on Jan 14, 2012 5:40 PM PST up reply actions

When Jason played

4-2 5 sacks Carson can’t move don’t blame the oline because he can’t move at all. Plus you talk like he has never played Football in his life. All I said was Smith made plays when it counted. Carson 0-2 in playoffs. Ford isn’t this all star Wr’s that everyone makes him out to be. He makes big plays but not consistent plays.

by Micheal Y on Jan 14, 2012 6:39 PM PST up reply actions

dude the 0-2 playoff stat is total bullshit

Its really only 0-1 considering he blew out his knee on the first fucking play in his first playoff game, sorry he showed up its just his knee ligaments that did not for that game. He had one real chance at a playoffs game and he got beat but its not like he has had multiple chances and keeps screwing them up.

by Marcus Allen Krause on Jan 14, 2012 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

okay he is 0-1

but did he make any plays to win that playoff game. Benson rushed for 169 yards 8 yards a carry. So tell me how they lost the game well Palmer 50% for a TD and int. 146 yard. like I said Palmer doesn’t show up when you need. He has to get that stamp off him like Smith did yesterday

And to Mark Sanchez's Jets.

It’s not like they lost to a good team either.

"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and f*** -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get f***ed. Someday, the Raiders will be strong again, and they will dip the ball in s*** and shove it down the throats of the wholesome, white, heartland teams that pray together and don't deliver late hits." - George Carlin.

Jury is still out

For one, I’m sick to my stomach seeing the signs 49ers fans made for Smith. Last year, these same fools wanted him benched. They’ve booed him mercilessly for most of his time there. The fickle fan and the band wagoners. I do like how tough, mentally, the dude has been. 7 Offensive Coordinators and no support from your fans, kudos to Alex Smith. He stepped up big today, no doubt. However, 5 turnovers by the Saints means you don’t deserve to win. Also, that Saints D, especially the secondary has been suspect all year. Like the Packers, only the Pack get turnovers. Bad D will not win a championship. Smith has played safe all year, like Campbell for us, and their D has rewarded that (unlike us). They tackled beautifully out there, made me hate our defense even more. Harbaugh would be a fool to let his DC go, not after this season. Is it me or does it seem Harbaugh hates to shake hands after the game? Looked like he blew by Payton.

but Gruden will still be my first choice.

First of all he never ditched

Al Fired him. If Gruden comes back, man, expect the old day raiders to be back in business. He has so much knowledge, and he can harness these group of men and turn them into monsters. Hard to see him come back though, he has stated he wants to analyze. But of anyone to coach the Raiders, Gruden is #1

Al traded him for

first round draft picks in 2002 and 2003 and second round picks in 2003 and 2004 plus $8 million in cash (…and you guys thought we gave a lot for Carson LOL! …of course Tampa did get a Super Bowl victory out of it. It remains to be seen what, if anything we get out of the Palmer trade.) after Gruden made it clear that he would never resign with us under Al conditions. Al conditions being that the Head Coach has no power over the hiring and firing of his coaches. That was unacceptable to Gruden.

I do however completely agree with the idea of Gruden’s return and welcome it with open arms, He would finally have the power to hire his own staff (which was the only reason he ever left in the first place) and hopefully the desire to finish the job he started here in Oakland!

The Realistic things is

We aren’t good enough on one side of the ball to win a superbowl. We are a run first team which means we should have a good defense to lean on. But our Defense isn’t good enough. Our Offense can’t carry us. We really need a HC who can made us an offensive super power or Defense.

agreed

call me crazy. but i want a defensive head coach

by ryanmoore57 on Jan 15, 2012 3:02 PM PST up reply actions

The truth is...

We don’t know what we’ll be next year.
We don’t know what our offense will look like
We don’t know what our Defense will look like (although they could be no worse than this year)
We don’t know who the HC, the OC, the DC or any other coach will be.
We don’t know who’ll be kept, who’ll be jettisoned and who will be brought in to replace those jettisoned

All we know now (just like Mark D.) is what we don’t know.

"Now I know what your thinking, did he fire six shots or only five. Ive forgotten myself in all this excitement, but being that this is the 44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and could blow your head clean off, you have to ask your question. Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk!"

I guess I don't see how Gruden

wouldn’t be one of McKenzie’s “guys” Since he has ties to Holmgren and was an offensive assistant in Green Bay and Philly prior to taking over the Raider HC job…He’s a winner and has history with this franchise. That said, i doubt he’d seriously consider coming back…

Still, I’ve said this from the beginning that assuming we hire someone currently on the Packers’ staff is just lazy association. When Ron Wolf left the Raiders to run the Packers did he hire a Raiders coach to help him build that franchise?

I read today that the Raiders want to talk to Mike McCoy, the Donkeyland OC. Not a bad move, considering what McCoy did with Denver’s offense on the fly when they made the move to Tebow. Considering we have a similarly skilled QB on the roster named Pryor it at least seems intriguing. Chudzinski in Carolina is another name to listen for, given the success Newton had in his system. Hell the Donkeys DC is supposed to be in the mix, too.

we never retreat we always ATTACK!!!
