Bowles assured Raiders won't automatically hire a Packer

According to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, the Raiders job is wide open to anyone who is deemed qualified to bring the Men In Black back to greatness. This is what he had to say:

Miami Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles was the first person to interview for the Oakland Raiders' head-coaching vacancy this weekend, and sources said the session went well.

According to league sources, Bowles was assured the Raiders job isn't earmarked for longtime Green Bay Packers assistant coach Winston Moss, whom many have linked to the job.

Bowles, whom the Dolphins would like to keep as defensive coordinator -- if not their head coach -- has strong ties to new Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie. The Raiders announced the dismissal of coach Hue Jackson on Tuesday, the same day they introduced McKenzie as their GM.

Bowles also is a candidate for the Minnesota Vikings' defensive coordinator position, according to sources. Dolphins players have told me they strongly support Bowles to be their coach.

The Raiders also want to interview Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers and offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, according to sources. Philbin, like Bowles, has interviewed for the Miami job

Now, I'll be one of the first to say that I like Todd Bowles. I like the look in his eyes and I like his demeanor. He seems like he has the ability to bring swagger to whoever he is around. What does the Nation think?

Dom Capers not the answer

I wouldn’t mind having any of those coaches except Dom Capers. he has a poor track record. maybe adding him on as a coordinator would be okay but not as head coach.

Wow I'm amazed at all the hate on Capers.

What was the weakest link on the Raiders last season? Capers would prove to be the quickest turnaround IMO. Everyone else is risky and unproven AT BEST.

Also there is ZERO CHANCE IN HELL GRUDEN WOULD COME BACK TO OAKLAND.

Been there, done that. I’m sure he would also be the answer to our 30th ranked D as well considering he was a WR coach/ OC before becoming HC for the Raiders.

Capers doesn't have a good track record as a HC

And the Packers defense sucked this season, for some reason. I don’t hate the guy and if he’s hired I’ll get behind him and hope for the best, but he wouldn’t be my first choice for head coach.

by Chris2814 on Jan 15, 2012 6:58 PM PST up reply actions

1st of All

Stop basing everything off of his track records. A different team, new direction, everything is different, so how can you expect the same result? Your basically calling the future as if it happened already. Capers or whomever comes in, the fact that now the power is balanced and not one guy making the calls makes it easier for a coach to be a coach and the GM to be the GM. Al our great leader, love and will always respect the man, but he did choose to sign Russell, Warren Sapp, Robert Gallery, Deangelo Hall, The list goes on, and because of it he has some blame to do with how our team went through the years. Yes, he made the calls, but im pretty sure everyone was like WTF, every single year except for the DMAC pick. Now we have a structured organization, balanced power between everyone and Reggie even wants his HC to choose who he wants around his system, giving whomever is decided to be coach power for himself.

Capers has won as a head coach.

There was once this defensive guru who failed as a head coach in his first stint at HC. He got a second chance and went to 4 Super Bowls, winning three…you can see him try to qualify for his 5th on Sunday…

Of the guys they’re talking to right now, none of them have head coaching experience. I wouldn’t hate them taking a flier on Gary Patterson at TCU, either. He’s a defensive minded coach who’s 4-2-5 scheme has been a complete ass kicker for over a decade…I know some college coaches come to the NFL and suck ass, but I don’t put Patterson in that group just yet. This guy worked his way from Division 2 Pittsburg (KS) State and helped turn a non-traditional power into a power with superior schemes and innovative recruiting.

They could end up doing much worse than Capers at this point…

Now now

To be fair to Capers, that GB defense was shit all year. It was well masked by play makers and ball hawks, but come playoff time it usually catches up to you. Last year he did a great job, they must have lost players in the offseason that were more important than we all thought. Still, ain’t this a kick, the Nation looking to get Chucky back. Don’t think it will happen though. Bowles or Moss seem to be the front runners, but we shall see. The Raiders are possibly the most mysterious team in the NFL in their actions. Very clandestine. Bastards :P

I Think Their Tying To Keep Moss....Assistant "HC"/"DC"???...Why They Moved So Quickly...
Linebackers coach Winston Moss is the only major defensive coach to keep his job and is a likely candidate to take Sanders’ place. But Moss, who also carries the title of assistant head coach, is a candidate for the St. Louis Rams’ vacant head coaching job.

"GB" Was Running The Al Davis "D"...And I Thought They Were Playing In A 3-4???

The Packers’ next step could be to promote Moss. But with several experienced coaches looking for jobs, McCarthy could look outside the building for Sanders’ replacement.

His list of candidates could include former San Francisco head coach Mike Nolan, McCarthy’s old boss with the 49ers.

McCarthy said last week that he wasn’t necessarily committed to the style of defense Sanders ran, a 4-3 alignment that featured aggressive press coverage by cornerbacks and relied mainly on pass rush pressure from the front four instead of blitzes — a major problem this season after defensive end Cullen Jenkins was injured.

“All of our schemes are under evaluation right now,” McCarthy said. “That’s what you do right now. That’s what this time is for.”

Still to this day it efn burns me. I had the flu so bad that night and had nothing else to do and the Raiders finally back after getting screwed by the Ravens game with big fat tony syragusa and the cheating ass ravens and the refs then pile driving rich Gannon.
With Brian Billich being recorded with his lips saying to take him out? Now these 2 hateful east coast teams are going back to the super bowl after next weeks decision time at foxborough. I hope that the NIners go even though I cringe at that thought at least they can represent CALI. And if the Niners do make I hope they spank the crap out those east coast teams.
Now with that being said lets hope the Raiders return and become a powerhouse of a team and take west for years to come. It is time for our new future to dominate these east coast teams and put Cali back on the map. It is to bad these teams cant take a drive threw east Oakland on gameday LOL Raiders will get their comeback. and I think everyone knows that the team was less competitive when Al got older and lost touch with the game. We will be a force and mark just gave a guy who means businesses the key to the house and the checkbook.

A couple of thoughts

I’m not sold on anyone on Green Bays defensive staff, not even a possible linebacker coach, I just don’t see why we would want someone as a coach from a defense that isn’t that good. I know they get turnovers and I believe those are often desperation passes when a team is trailing.

I think that Joe Philbin is a good OC. My heart and thoughts are with him during this time of the loss of his son. I just don’t see him being in a position to take on the HC job for the Raiders and truly be able to have his head in place to give the team the +100% required to be an outstanding HC. The Raiders have to get a HC that is outstanding or else don’t bother.

Sounds nice

If completely implausible. Philbin wouldn’t leave the Packers for another OC job. Nor should he. Despite their crap performance today, they’re still winners. We’re…not. We could be, but making a lateral move to a lesser team makes zero sense.

But we can dream.

Also, “Bowels won’t move”? I don’t know if that was intentional, but there’s a joke in there somewhere with that misspelling.

We had the same record as them

Despite breaking the record for penalties and having a horrid defense. It says ostensibly if we tighten up the screws on D and get some discipline, we’re contenders. After all, their defense had it’s big failures periodically through out the season as well. It’s not all about Tebow. Losing Sunday was a team failure.

by rightnasty on Jan 16, 2012 12:57 PM PST up reply actions

We did have the same Record

We know our Defense is awful but our offense wasnt a playoff offense. The last game of the year how many times did our offense slow down in the red zone. Our Special teams allowed big yards when we needed stops. To me we seem to be the papper Champs of the AFC West . When are we going to show up and Take the AFC.

by Micheal Y on Jan 16, 2012 7:53 PM PST up reply actions

Offense wasn't quite firing on all cylinders

Run game crapped out. TEs need to show up more often, but offensively we’re pretty close. We gave the Chargers a good run despite the non-existent defense.

And speaking of the Broncos, the Steelers let them bombs away and lost because of it. The Pats, even though they’ve got that overwhelming offense still played tough D in that game. They didn’t need to score 45 points. They could have won with 14.

Chucky

I was against(because no coach or player is bigger than the game) and I am changing my mind. My reason is simple. I HAVE ALREADY seen people bashing the new GM because he has not done anything in their estimation. So I say give the fans what they want. Give them Chucky I am certain that after he makes a mistake they will be calling for him to be fired anyway. I am certain they will bitch and moan then say Gruden has to go with one breath ,then complain about continuity with the next.So you see this is a win/ win for McKenzie,if he brings in Gruden he can say I gave the fans what they wanted and if he sucked that gets him more time because it was the fans choice… So I would welcome Gruden back with a strong DC this time…..So maybee Gruden HC Spags/Del Rio DC and hmmmmm Saunders OC

The Miami Dolphins were scheduled to interview Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy for their vacant head-coaching position Monday morning, according to a league source.

McCoy has gained traction as a possible head coach after his innovative work with quarterback Tim Tebow this season, converting the Broncos offense into a scheme that emphasized Tebow’s strength via a zone-read attack.

I dunno...

If McCoy can make Tebow look like a QB and is able to tailor an offense to the guys playing in it, change it mid-season and have success he deserves a shot at an interview.

I also like the way McCoy adjusts at half time, something Hue was never able to do.

Considering how little talent Denver had on offense

and that fact that this guy was able to change the whole offense mid-season to play to the strengths of his new “QB” has to be considered a strength on his part…might as well interview him.

And your right, he might do very well with Pryor!

I am in no way advocating this guys hiring as our head coach, but leaving no stone unturned can’t be a bad way to go about this most important hire that will dictate our direction for the next few years if not much longer.

Their offense wasn't great

But they did a great job of completely restructuring their offense for Tebow, so the guy clearly did something right. I’m all for interviewing lots of different guys, and it’s good to see McKenzie is at least talking to non-Packers coaches.

Besides Reggie Is New At The "GM" Duties So It's Good That He Immerse Himself In It This Way...

All that experience can only help down the road so go ahead a knock of a few extra interviews even if your mind is already made up…And like Al Davis always said it info for a later time down the road too…

Bottom line is that it can't hurt to interview these guys

Worst case scenario is he’s not the right guy and you move on. Best case, though, is that you find out the guy just might be exactly what you’re looking for.

McKenzie will get his Green Bay guys now that their eliminated...

he has to get the guys he trusts, so I expect someone from this organization and maybe bring Bowles in too!

Let the Interviews Begin

Now the Raiders can interview the Green Bay guys, but I still am not sure why Capers name is here except for a DC position. Can the Raiders contact the last four teams during the bye week? I am more curious about the Raiders next DC rather than the HC right now.

by Mallard Davis on Jan 16, 2012 10:29 AM PST reply actions

The only way Green Bay has to let Capers leave is for a better position

and since he’s already their DC the only higher position for him is HC.
So. he’s either our HC or he’s Green Bays DC

We have to hire our new HC first…then he will hire our new DC, OC and the rest of his staff

"Now I know what your thinking, did he fire six shots or only five. Ive forgotten myself in all this excitement, but being that this is the 44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and could blow your head clean off, you have to ask your question. Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk!"

New Protocol

This is new for the Raiders letting the HC hire his staff. The Raiders have been bad so long on Defense I am more concerned about the right DC right now. Most the pieces are in place on Offense.

by Mallard Davis on Jan 16, 2012 11:39 AM PST up reply actions

I understand your concern

but there is no guarantee that we’ll look the same on offense either depending on what direction we are to go with our new coaches. It could be that they retain Saunders and the offense stays at least similar to what we’ve had or they could go 180* and change it all up …you just never know.

You are assuming that these coordinators are under contract for next year

And other posts I saw above… The only way this “they dont have to let them leave for a lateral move” applies is if they are under contract

If they aren’t, they can go take any job doing whatever they like

by lchristmas on Jan 16, 2012 1:34 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

True enough,

and I don’t know their contract status’s, but people on here act as if we can have anyone from any team for any of our coaching positions and that simply ain’t true!

That point also assumes that these coaches would uproot their families, leave the same job they have now with players they already now and are comfortable with to come to a new team for the same job and start anew on a rebuilding team.
Unless they are extremely unhappy with the situation where they’re at… they are not moving laterally anyway.

So next time someone says something like that , I’ll add the “if their not under contract with their team and want out” addendum to my point.

"Now I know what your thinking, did he fire six shots or only five. Ive forgotten myself in all this excitement, but being that this is the 44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and could blow your head clean off, you have to ask your question. Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk!"

oh yeah and having to go through the disappearance and subsequent discovery of the 21 year old son of the OC had nothing to do with it

Rodgers never even had gone to a funeral before that. The whole team was upset about it and it without a doubt played into their bad play. Just because a team lost doesn’t mean the team that won was better, it just means they were better that day. I would never say the Broncos were better than us this year even if they won the division. The Packers are better than the Giants but they weren’t that day. I give credit to them for dominating that day but they are not the better team. People love belittling the Packers and its just silly. They never talked shit to anybody and yet people are so gleeful at them losing. Its annoying.

oh i know the packers are better

I had them beating the giants! I just felt that there really isnt an excuse to why they lost. I’m not a packer hater either. I know how much the loss of a love one hurts and i know it played a part, but then again it was his decision to coach. Packers are an elite program and their players dont have loud mouths unlike the giants and jets, i get that. I still give the giants credit though for capitalizing on the packs mistakes. Giants played well on all 3 phases of the game. I respect the pack franchise and its fans. i have friends and family that are packers fans. Im not trying to belittle anyone. I think my comment was misunderstood and i apologize if it was. It was a bad loss and the time off really hurt them cuz they were rusty.

sorry i over reacted being a huge Packer fan too (WI Resident) and was still in pain from the loss lol

They absolutely were rusty and the Giants definitely get the credit for the win. They played great and capitalized on the mistakes, and in fact played well enough to beat the Packers even if they had played very well. I definitely took it badly brother. I just reacted because I didnt hear any Packers making any excuses and were definitely giving the GIants credit. It just sucked a lot to have the Giants talk sooooo much massive shit before hand and have the Packers not even show up to play.

getting the two sides together is obviously saying ok go with it

He is simply doing damage control and even though I supported him I find it disgusting. Taking responsibility for it would do a lot more for his image than pussyfooting away from it. First he threw the team under the bus when he made obvious mistakes too and now he is throwing the front office under the bus. They wouldn’t have made the deal if Hue was on board, now he realised it was silly to give up so much (even though I like that Palmer is a Raider) and it looked bad on him so he is shying away. He is not the person he seemed to be while Al was here, he was just saying what Davis wanted to hear. Now he is just saying what he thinks future employers want to hear.

Look, just because Hue said "we should go get Palmer"

Doesn’t make him responsible for what we paid to get him. Nor is he responsible for Mark Davis saying “yeah, okay let’s go get him”.

The Hue hate is so tired at this point. He may have lobbied for it, but at the end of the day the guy didn’t even have the power to hire his own coaching staff so he sure as shit didn’t have to power to actually negotiate the deal and execute it.

Bottom line is that he’s not the only one responsible for it, but either way he’s gone now so you can shut up about it. Seriously, move on.

The organization must have been a mess after Al passed

someone had to take some semblance of control, certainly. Mark Davis has admitted he doesn’t know football. But I don’t for one minute believe that Hue had the power to fire Bresnahan and replace him. Not do I believe he had the power to negotiate and execute the deal for Palmer. Sure he probably pushed for it pretty hard. But Mark Davis had the ultimate power to say yes or no.

I’m not saying Hue isn’t culpable in some way for some of this stuff. But he’s not alone in it.

You act like Hue was the worst thing to happen to the Raiders ever. He wasn’t even the worst thing to happen to the Raiders this season. In face, we still had one of the best seasons we’ve had in nearly a decade.

Sure the end of it sucked, and Hue should be held accountable for it. And he WAS. He’s gone. THE END.

The worst part of that is him refering to the organization as "I" and not "We"

These kinds of statements show clearly the power trip that Hue was on once Al passed. You can’t make those kinds of statements and then when things go sour for you, pass the buck like a game of hot potato.
