A New Name Emerges in Raiders' Coaching Search
Adam Schefter tweeted news of a coach candidate that interviewed under the radar.
I don't have time to add much info at the moment. So fill us in in the comments sections. I will say that I love the fact that McKenzie does not appear to be leaving any stoned unturned, and it is great to see them bring in top flight up and comers.

cause they'd totally do that...
RIP Al Davis
PS3 - agentpoop (dont ask why the name... tell me if your from a blog)

Just wrote about that.
I already like Reggie’s commitment here. Whoever we hire as head coach, I’ll be confident that he’s the best man for the job simply based on the extent he’s going to to find him (as opposed to some of our fears that he’d just parachute Moss or someone else from GB into the job).
I don’t know much about Carmichael, especially since Sean Payton runs that team’s offense. That said, there aren’t many better guys to learn from so one would hope his apprenticeship would serve him well. I’d have to assume he’d be a better OC candidate though.
"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and f*** -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get f***ed. Someday, the Raiders will be strong again, and they will dip the ball in s*** and shove it down the throats of the wholesome, white, heartland teams that pray together and don't deliver late hits." - George Carlin.
would you still think so if after all this Moss and Perry were still brought in?

Yes, because I would assume he'd done due diligence on them.

I actually did check for a fanpost before posting this
Was a couple of minutes ahead of you, otherwise I wouldn’t have did it. In any event, it’s on the front page now.
When Sean Payton got injured, Carmicheal called the plays.
Sean Payton, let Carmichael continue to call the plays for Saints even after Payton returned to the sidelines for the rest of the season. Might be a good fit.
I don’t know what all the fuss is about Denver’s OC McCoy? He was OC for the Panthers before going to Denver, that was known for defense, not offense. McCoy did a good job running Denver’s offense to fit Tebows game, but any college OC could do that. McCoy seems to be a hot ticket for a head coaching job with Miami wanting to interview him as well. Could someone fill me in on why? On the other hand, Denver’s DC would make some sense.

I heard Sean say he didnt call the plays before the saints pre-game interview and remember when he busted his leg
That O coordinator for the saints was running things. I don’t remember seans exact statement but he said he just makes sure that everyone was doing their job and that the team was in unison before the niners game.

Seriously, why the Donkey's OC?
Their O sucked ass! It was the D that got them that far. What? Are we to start running the option too???? BAD IDEA
We could start TP!!!

Because the Broncos managed to completely overhaul their entire offense mid-season
and succeed with it. And considering the weapons (or lack of weapons) they have over there, that’s actually pretty impressive. So why not interview the guy. Doesn’t mean you have to give him the job.
they went from shitty to slightly less shitty
neither of which I would want to see in Silver and Black
They went from 1-4 to beating the Steelers in the playoffs.
With literally no offensive weapons. I’m not saying he’s a good fit for the Raiders, but I can see why McKenzie would want to take a closer look at the guy.
Not as HC, but...
I’ve already said that I’d like to see him as OC.
For all those who would be fine with a defense like Green Bay or New Orleans, that is better at turnovers than stops, then this is the type of guy that you want for OC, so that your offense can make up for your defense…

As someone who was mentored by Sean Peyton
it could be a great hire in the same way Jim Harbaugh was in SF
yes but we dont appear to have the Defense that sf does

agreed. while we need some help in some key aspects on defense
we’re way better than our performances this year would indicate, and it was a direct reflection on how the coaches failed to get them to ever play as a unit. Well, to rarely play as a unit. Good coaches make them become a unit that consistently works with one another to make shit happen. It was a rarity for that to occur with our defense, and the prior year we flashed moments of being close, albeit with some different personnel, but mostly the same.

Still Think It Comes Down To Moss But We Will Have Other Options Lined Up??
Also future references and possible “OC”/“DC” candidates as well…
"Tebowphobe"!!!
I like this idea:
I want a guy who can get us the most TD’s every Sunday.
I also want a DC who creates constant pressure and likes Forced Fumbles as much as interceptions.
not to be a smartass
but isnt that every teams goal? want, need and have are completely different things
Seems like we eased up
on forced fumbles to focus more on interceptions this season.
We were terrorizing quarterbacks the previous season. We had the 2nd most sacks in the league.
I like this interview
People can call him overrated if they want, but the Saints are a great team with a dynamic offense. They clearly know how to utilize the guys they have. He’s worth interviewing, for sure.
Did not the Saints lead in almost every offensive category?
That seems like a smart move, to at least interview him. He also practically ran the team as Sean was sidelined from the injury.
THE OFFENCE
The raiders are going to hire new HC and he will bring in his own OC.The raiders O has been working for 2 years this will be the 3 season,it is pretty good, with a healthy Mc Fadden it would be scary .So lets change everything and the guys will have to learn a new O before next season begins.Makes sense to me,can you say Jason Cambell.
by calibers master on Jan 16, 2012 4:43 PM PST reply actions
Difference in Campbell and Palmer
Campbell was a qb who had several OC’s during his career and it took him over a year to adjust to a new offense. Yes once he adjusted to Hue he was very good. However, you look at the success palmer had with as little time as he had to learn a new offense after sitting on the couch. haveing an entire offseason to learn the playbook, plus OTA, real training camp and real pre-season, I think he can handle it, and will definately help these young receivers to learn it as he showed to be a step up leader once he arrived, and the young players looked to him for that leadership right away.
Gruden or Cowher - NO EXCEPTIONS.
Taking it to the next level? There are NO OTHER OPTIONS for Head Coach. All these other cats are excellent OC and DC picks but we want the BEST to run the whole enchilada Nation!
Sorry Jack, CHUCKIE’S BACK!!!!!!!
Not that I wouldn't be cool with those guys
But no Super Bowl winning coach has ever won it with a 2nd team. Coaches rarely make good comebacks.
Gruden
The difference with gruden would be that the raiders team that went to the superbowl WAS gruden’s team. yeah callahan was the head coach but all he did was call plays for a team that gruden built. so technically gruden took two teams to the superbowl in the same year and would have won with either one. Had he been in oakland our starting probowl center would never have wandered off in the middle of the night, and the opposing defense wouldnt’ have known every play we were gonna run before we ran it.
Bill Cowher I'm Down With...That Other Bastard Already Shit On His Previous Opertunity!!!
"Tebowphobe"!!!
Several Coaches Have Returned To Do Very Well...That "SB" Record Is There To Be Broken!!!
All it takes is once and that won’t be pimped again…That’s how records like that go…Worthless!!!…And already a few of those coaches have returned to the “SB” but just not won…And than there’s the one who was there as a loser to us but came back to win with the “Lambs”….Remember Vermilel???
"Tebowphobe"!!!
Why go after this guy when we already had Hue? Hue was fired because 1) McKenzie wanted “his guy”, or 2) we wanted a defensive minded head coach.
Carmichael Jr. doesn’t appear to satisfy any of those criteria.
Hue made is bed.....
Hue made it clear before Mackenzie was brought in, that he wanted to retain a lot of power and decision making and NO GM is going to stand for that, especially with all the many things he will have to address with this dysfunctional organization coming in. No shock Hue was fired after saying all that, not to mention all the smack talk he put out there at the beginning of the season, only to do absolutely nothing to back any of it up!! Hue was a joke imo, just like Cable before him was.
smack talk
Hue’s biggest smack talk before the beginning of the season was that he wanted to build a bully. If you REALLY look at the raider games he did just that. we lead in personal foul penalties because our guys were beating the crap out of people. most of the games we played we knocked at least one opposing player out of the game and many times out of several games. he built a bully we knocked people’s heads into the dirt, the problem is that the WNFL (womens national football league) has made so many new personal foul penalties that bullies have to be even better to make up for the penalties.
Still don't understand why everybody has a hard-on for Hue. So he had some dynamic plays, and wasn't afraid to take chances. It's fair to say we had player that have the talent...
To execute. But to give this guy so much praise when we only went 8-8 and tied with the dolts and donkeys…to give this guy so much praise when we broke the record for most penalties….to give this guy so much praise we had to rely on our defense from losing the 8 wins on the last minutes of the game. i think we actually regressed from the prior year. Sure, he’s a likeable guy, but we need sturcture in this team and thats what I thino Reggie is doing. Hue never wore his leadership on the field, never commanded poise or respect or professionalism. He looked like a nervous wreck, he looked like a cheerleader, and he looked like a fool at the nail salon.
I have a feeling Reggie knows some of the staff he is going to hire, and he’s looking for a few others that will be able to gel with them and build upon that. Meshing personalities is a must as well. It’ll be interesting, thats for sure.

add to that, all the bad years i think we have fallen into this syndrome where we have lowered our standards a bit and the coach that gave us some success... we want to cling to.
We have our opinions but I have confidense in what Mark is doing. He already made a good choice in listening to madden and Wolfe.
Yeah, but Hue also didn't have his most dynamic offensive players for the majority of the season.
I had lots of problems with the guy, and I don’t think he managed to make the right adjustments all the time. But considering the circumstances, death of Al Davis, season ending injury to Campbell and McFadden in successive weeks, endless other injuries throughout the season, no offseason and basically no training camp, and terrible DC (who was basically just an Al Davis stand in/stooge) whose defensive schemes gave away games…all that considered I think it’s pretty amazing we went 8-8.
I understand why McKenzie wants to go with his own guy, but I do think that a lot of fans here are WAY too hard on Hue and I think he got something of a raw deal here.
Agreed with Chris2814
Hue had to deal with A LOT of adversity and plain bad luck this season, and 8-8’s not bad when taken in context. Look at the injuries that we had to deal with! Take, for instance, the Saints…if you take away Brees to a broken collarbone (Campbell), Sproles to a lis franc sprain (DMac), Colston (Ford), Roman Harper (Huff), Devery Henderson (D. Moore)….what would THAT Saints team finish with? Not 8-8, I’ll tell you that. And the whole “gave away the draft” thing can’t be blamed on Hue beyond the 1st rounder…the fact that we don’t have a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rounder was ALL Al. I love Carson, they definitely overpaid for him, but at the time, what else could they do? Roll with Boller and Pryor? Well, with the benefit of hindsight, I’d say yeah. Sans trade, they would’ve finished 4-12 and be picking 4th or 5th, and MAYBE be in position to make a play for RGIII. Only four games worse, as it turned out we didn’t make the playoffs ANYWAY….so sure, I regret that we don’t have a first rounder this year, but back in October, pre-Tebow’s preordained destiny coming out, this division looked highly winnable (and was won with an 8-8), and the Palmer trade looked like the right thing. Can’t kill Hue for that, or for very much, truthfully. What’s done is done, let’s start fresh with a new kind of head coach, get that defensive house in order, and try to win with Palmer. We paid enough for him, let’s ride him as far as he’ll go.
the fact that boller was the back-up was bad
how many young qb’s were signed off the street and outperformed Boller? Kellen Clemens came in off the street for the Rams and made a lot of fans forget about a draft bust by the name of Sam Bradford. There were so many better QB’s out there that should have been on the Raiders roster in the first place. and dont forget that Jackson let go of Trent Edwards in the preseason to make Boller the primary back-up.
The underlying issue with Jackson, to me, was that he liked to use players that he had previous experience with. Boller, Palmer, TJ Houshmanzadeh, and of course the coach that he made the defensive (collapse) coordinator, Chuck-it Bresnahandthegametothem. (not the most clever nick names but whatever).
He made some bad moves while he was at the helm, TJ, some really bad ones, Boller as backup, and some that doomed the season, choosing an incapable DC.
Hue was a good OC and a daring coach, but I think he was in over his head.
Al picked Bresnahan and all the coaches on Hues staff
You can blame Hue for Boller, TJ and getting rid of Sterling Moore, but you have to blame Al for Bresnapig.
"Now I know what your thinking, did he fire six shots or only five. Ive forgotten myself in all this excitement, but being that this is the 44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and could blow your head clean off, you have to ask your question. Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk!"
Dirty Harry Callahan
Can he be blamed for Boller and Sterling Moore?
I don’t remember when Moore was cut, but didn’t Al generally make all those roster decisions as well? I’m asking seriously because I don’t know. I just assumed he always did.
smores or sterling more was not cut
that pats game in oakland was moores last game as a raider. bilachek wanted moore on his team . not sure if it was a trade or a cash deal, but moore was on the pats. that might have been the last al davis deal b4 his death. i could be wrong with this but check it out.
by sports with steve on Jan 17, 2012 5:23 PM PST up reply actions
steve you should check your facts
Sterling Moore was absolutely cut from the active roster by the Raiders in preseason. He was then signed to the practice squad and remained there until october 15th until he was signed to the Patriots active roster. But Al Davis had already passed by then and players cannot be dealt from the practice squad. But Hey, don’t take my word for it, it’s all here: http://www.patriots.com/news/article-1/Patriots-release-DB-Sterling-Moore—S-Ross-Ventrone/6c6f5355-7120-4bf2-a197-2025c9324d0c
I was not aware that Hue took no part in choosing his staff
but i had forgotten that he cut Sterling Moore, that one stung too. Watching a player do his best and outperform other players, only to be cut sucks. Then to watch that same player end up being a starter on the number one team in the AFC sucks hard
#1 team in the AFC
yeah they were #1 because of their offense, you forget that defense was one of the worst in the nfl, and their pass defense got shredded many times. so how good were their DB’s really? we had a better defense than the pats did and our d sucked.
Why not
Jim Caldwell he gets 1 loosing season and gets the ax what you think as are HC???
caldwell and peyton
no what he needed was a REAL backup qb. the gm even said it was his fault for NOT planning ahead and having a real back up to peyton because everyone looked at peyton as superman. and barring a basically broken neck, he would have probably beaten brett favre’s streak.
Has Gruden came up at all other than fan forums?
Honestly he is the best coach in Raiders recent history and I think he still has the fire to coach. He was pretty well loved by the fans and players and built an awesome team within a few short seasons. I want Gruden back and while they are at it, bring in Tim Brown to tutor these WR’s.
chucky is all over facebook with the raider fans ..
by sports with steve on Jan 17, 2012 5:24 PM PST up reply actions
Gruden
1 Gruden is the SECOND best coach in raiders history. No one can top what madden did considering he NEVER had a losing season with the silver and black and that was even after taking over a team that had a horribly losing season prior to his arrival. But other than fans wanting gruden back his name is not even being considered because he has stated he is not interested in coming back to coaching right now, he just signed an extension with ESPN for monday night football and that was AFTER all these head coaches were being fired.
Gruden would be good but don’t see it happening mark is trying to do it his way so he can prove that he knows what he is doing and bringing back a coach that AL had is not happening!!!
I read the Yahoo article saying that Mark hated Al and vice versa
but i quickly disregarded it as crap. there really havent been any other reports other than that article written by a hack of a writer who loved Hue Jackson that said there was a rift between Mark and Al. Generally speaking, anything put up in the media i tend to look past because its usually garbage and they are just looking for ways to gouge at the Silver and Black.
That being said, what evidence is there that Mark would snub a great coach just because it was a former hire of his late great father.
can anyone please tell me why we are bottom fishing for coaches?
we didnt even go after 12 good dc’c in nolan and spaqs.i am really trying hard to think that were getting better coaches but i dont see it.
morningway, tice, and who is next? hue jackson?
by sports with steve on Jan 18, 2012 3:41 PM PST reply actions
We'll see
Without far superior players added to the roster, it won’t matter who the coach is really. We lack the talent needed to make plays more consistently and of course win more games and until the roster is gutted to bring in those players, we are just spinning our wheels. We need players who get mad at losing instead of laughing it up on the sidelines like we saw them do this season and in the past. Since they get paid so much whether they win or lose, we need to focus on guys who will not stand for watching this team do the same things over & over every single season!!
Carmichael?
Carmichael is interviewing with the Colts, even though he was asked by the Raiders first . Same thing could be said about a hand full of other coaches asked to interview with the Raiders. Their not lining up at the door to take the Job. Not a good sign.
maybe the raiders told them to keep looking
and they didnt find anyone that the like. ESPN reported that no one “Wowed” the raiders and they were not hired or had further discussions
why would they ask them to come in , if their not interested?
Find anybody they like? they only had two interviews and I could see why they don’t like them.
by Captain Chaos on Jan 20, 2012 10:57 AM PST up reply actions
lack of interest by coaches
Right now the raiders are still suffering from the coaching stigma created by big AL. When you consider a head coach has not lasted more than 2 seasons since gruden was lost, most coaches are scared to take the raiders HC job. yeah big AL is dead and there is now someone else in charge, but when the VERY first thing that GM does is fire the HC, creating yet ANOTHER raiders coach who has had more success than any raiders HC since gruden/callahan (refer to previous post) then that doesn’t exactly give the warm fuzzies to other HC candidates out there for longevity.
i dismissed the notion of hillis becomin the starter but as a back up its good.
