Building A Defense. Part 1. Tyvon Branch.
I'm just going to come out with it. Tyvon Branch has got to be our first priority this off-season. He is the best player on the defense plain and simple. We gotta get him signed quick. I don't see him leaving unless the eagles gave him a hefty deal and was reunited with Aso. We do have a need at the safety position though. Honestly Huff is getting overpayed to be a nickle corner and I'm sorry but not a fan of Girodono. Huff needs to be traded and take anything we can get from him. Girodono can stay and be a backup to the starting the free safety. Which that bring me to my next point.
Branch at Free Safety. We have spitballed the idea around before and I never used to agree with it but then we played the packers. The Packers messed our stuff up. There was this one play though that I hope everyone remembers because I can't find it. Tyvon Branch covered Greg Jennings deep one on one and slapped the ball down. There aren't many players in this league that can do that. Cover newly vacaitioning poster boy Aaron Rodgers go to guy one on one with all day to pass. HOW!?
We have had Huff there for awhile. Girodono can't tackle or cover just kinda stands there and jumps at the ball. With Branch at FS it's a lot easier to find a Strong.
Mike Mitchell had a bit of a bad year. He was on the field a lot but I think he had one pick but that's the only play I remember him missing. He has a lot of upside and truely is a Raider.
Here's a curve ball for you guys. Landry out of Washington. The guy can play when healthy. Having him and Tyvon in the back with a 3-4 upfront?? Sounds like a bully. He flys to the ball and can lay wood. Let him get healthy and we have decent backups at each position ( Mitchell and Girodono) We just can't let our ruff defense lose its diamond. Branch is a star and a true Raider.

i really hope we do go after Landry
Branch and Landry would be a great set of safetys. I like Gio but also would rather he be the back up. Then again if he improves as much in the off season as he did this past off season he could he a great player. He grew leaps and bounds from his final year in Green Bay to this year with us.

Also we maybe should consider Cortland Finnigan from Ten.
He looks like a Raider and is pretty solid at man coverage.

Yes! to Reggie signing
Laron Landry, when I read that he was a free agent; next to signing OG Carl Nicks & our own T. Branch I think this is the most important free agent out there.
restructure or trade Mr. Huff, he will always be remembered for the game saving touchdown interception against Houston following Al’s passing.
Well I read Curry's scouting report
And it says he would hit better in the middle of 3-4 better then the outside pass rusher. Which seemed to be the case he seemed to better at stopping the run and making hits on ball carriers in the flats rather then pass rushing, SO McClain and Curry in the middle. Wimbly on one OLB and Scott,Groves,Moss, and Maybe shaugnessy at the other OLB. Seymour, Houston, Bryant at ends and I think we need to trade or restrucure Kelly because we need a NT through FA and probably the draft.
its very likely in my opinion...
with ole’ mak as our gm he says he is fond of a west coast offence (even though palmer wouldnt really work so well with that) and he likes the 3-4 which he knows well
I expect us to go after 2-3 big name free agents.
With our first pick likely to be a comp pick and a new coach clearing house we could have some money to blow. The defense needs work I think the offense is fine besides a couple O lineman for madden sake but we had a decent line that will only get better with Veldheer and WIz getting better and better.
Not yet.
but a few restructures, a few trades and a few cuts and viola!
We have money! and hopefully a few extra picks too.

The new coach will do whatever to get money.
There’s no way the new guy keeps all the same players from last year and doesn’t get anyone new. He’s going to put his mark on franchise and I hope it’s a defensive one.

The new head coach, whoever it ends up being
had better start on defense, because we are much weaker and older there than on offense.

re-structure Palmer
I dont know how much he is making but its definitely a lot, take out 4 mill of his salary, take out 4 of Huff or trade him, re-structure with Wmbley and with that we have something around 12 mill, enought to get Landry and another player OR Cortland Finnegan. Id like Landry better because we have young guys at CB with Chekwa and DVD so I would prefer a Safety
I dont think anybody thinks gio as a starting safety is advisable
But I definitely want the guy on the team.
They already announced huff was moving to corner right? (without a coach in place hmmmmm???)
If that actually happens – he’ll be starting opposite routt. We need a play making safety. Landry would be awesome.

I agree totally he wasn't healthy
I just also got the feeling that when Hue was in the final presser… for what it’s worth. He voiced his opinion about players who talk a lot a deliver little it seemed to be slanted towards the higher paid individuals on the defense. One of those would be Huff we know McClain isn’t very vocal.
Al Davis the Greatest Raider of all times... You will live forever in the hearts of true Raider fans...RIP
I think that might've been a Hue idea right before he got canned
I think our starting corners are going to be Routt one side and either Chekwa/Van Dyke/mid-level free agent on the other.
Good post RF21
Signing Tyvonn is absolutely critical and must be a first priority. I think people are being a little unfair to Huffy as he played with injury all season and I still think he is a quality player in the league. I also think Mitchell is underrated for his season he didn’t really get any preseason and when he was out there he may not have made ‘impact’ plays he shut down some excellent tight ends.
I like LaRon Landry but he has been getting a lot of heat in the Washington media so that does give me some pause.

Branch and Landry..
Two hard hitting safeties who fly to the ball but who are also inconsistent in coverage. The branch vs. jennings play you mentioned does show that tyvon can run downfield and make a play on the ball, but remember he played corner in college. Now tyvon has to cover TE’s 1on1 in this defense, he’s too small to consistently challenge catches from bigger TE’s and it has been a dagger in an otherwise solid passing defense.
Landry is bigger, and can probably more solidly cover TE’s but he’s not a guy who can be asked to cover the slot man to man, especially quicker slippery guys.
The DB’s aren’t really the problem in this defense tho. Now that DVD and Chekwa have a year under their belts, I see a pretty solid CB rotation especially with Huff helping out in the nickel.
He doesn't seem to small.
Watch the first video and he is the only one tackling the TES, and the biggers RBs/FBs. Is huff bigger then Branch? Or is Gio?

TE’s are a different beast to cover, Tyvon CAN cover WR’s but with all the pass interference rules in todays NFL TE’s box smaller DB’s out very effectively. Tyvon isn’t a small man, but 6’0 having to get around a 6’6 man is hard.

Your assuming that we'll be playing the same defense we play now
The scheme we run will and should dictate who we keep, resign, dump and acquire this off season.
The same goes for offense and until we know who our head coach will be, who our OC and DC will be and what direction this team is going to take it’s hard to say who should stay and who should go.
That said, I’d like Tyvon to stay because he should fit somewhere in what ever system we end up playing in.

To me because our defense was so bad we can completely start over but
Our offense can be a Super Bowl offense. With everyone healthy, McFadden back, and an offseason for Palmer and receivers to get better. Not too mention the solid O line will be better next year.

Is Bresnehan still on staff...
I am sure it is only a technicality that he is since Reggie said the new HC will be choosing his own staff. But as far as having a Superbowl offense, we are far from it! Our original problem of QB is still there. If Carson goes down, will JC be there to pick up the wins or vise versa. And our glass running backs and We’d. I mean every last piece of our offense except for our Kline is made of glass. Except for Bush who will be gone, GOOD LUCK MICHEAL, YOU MADE THE RAIDERNATION PROUD! He is no ballhawk, he is a tackler w/ speed. Gio has more interceptions, as his 1st year with the raiders, and gio is slower and and worst at tackling, but yet has more interceptions than tyvon? i watched every game at least twice so maybe if you were more specific in wich games he gave up TDs id believe you. by the way rout gave up more TDs than branch and so did gio and so did MM.
he doesn’t get picks because he blankets the receiver and the QB would have to go somewhere else. just look at namdi’s stats, not many ints.

Here is your proof
Even Paul Gutierrez states that he was charged with 5 TD’s. Also with a burn rate of 55%. He lacks a lot of ball skills. He is so aggressive towards plays which is which why he gets burned or gives up those touchdown. Don’t get me wrong he is good, but he is no Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, Nick Collins, or even Roman Harper. Yet people brag on how beast he is when really you have to be real sometimes. He is good, but honestly getting laron is a better option for us, he has better stats as a overall player, he isn’t just one sided and can tackle, he can tackle and get turnovers. Not to mention this guy can hit way harder then branch.

Ive never liked the burn rate stat. to many variables for it to accurately portray a players coverage skills
I understand where your coming from tho and i agree he is no ed reed.
By that links stats Gio is our best coverage guy with a burn rate of 42.5% and DVD comes in at a close second at 43.8%. We all know these are not our best coverage guys.
Rout has a burn rate of 47.4% while giving up eight touchdowns. Plus, he was the most penalized player in the NFL, getting flagged 17 times, including nine in the last three games which led to 1st downs and TDs. Got 4 picks tho
you have to understand that safety is a much different position then CB. branch has to cover 6-6 260 TEs 1 on 1 where CBs don’t. Safety’s also have to cover much deeper which is harder to do since the Receivers are at top speed by the time they get there. Also safeties usually always give up more TDs just like defensive ends get more sacks than the interior linemen. its just the way it is.
by SmashmouthFB on Jan 20, 2012 10:41 AM PST up reply actions
True
Both positions are different. But with all the speed and good tackling, Tyvon should be a beast with all that skill, i mean like Polamalu status. The reason he isn’t is because of how he gets burned and gives up TD’s. Top CB’s have low burn rates, and that’s why their shut down corners. As for branch, he plays off of the guy most of the time, which means their should be no reason for a big play. Raiders have the worst “big play defense” in the world. With Tyvon back there we still end up with 40+ yard plays etc. To me, Tyvon shouldn’t be resigned, he is a liability in the backfield, when the ball goes deep, everyone is holding their breathe, why? because hes short, can’t jump and its like we don’t have trust. All that speed but yet, giving up too much imo. As I said we need a cover guy not a tackler, thats what are LB’s are for. Btw no problem on the article and sorry for the rude comment toward you above.

A good coordinator doesnt ask a player to do something he has a problem with. IF tyvon has shown liabilities when covering in certain areas of the game, then the coordinator needs to help him out.
Definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result.
Raiders defense needs to play to Tyvon’s strengths, not ask him to do shit he cant do.

his strengths is playing in the box
8 man fronts, other than that he is a liability in the backfield. Don’t blame the DC, cause Tyvon is playing, and Chuck put him were he excels, by playing close to watch for the run. As you pointed out, what he cannot do, he can’t cover well enough to give us turnovers, as i said he is so aggressive, and bites too much. Also a good DC trust that his player can do what he is asked, not run away because he is uncomfortable.

he leads the team in tackles because RBs/receivers get past our LBs (poor angles and tackling) which forces the safeties to come up and make the tackle

Ok not saying stats
matter , but they do show how much a player produces, and their tendencies. Stats are facts, and I base my knowledge on both stats and the player. For example, Rivers, i hate him the most in the NFL, but i know he is one of the top QB’s in the league regardless of how bad he played this season. LOL,about tyvon, come on man, he leads in tackles because he is always playing close, to watch the run then pass.

FS
he was only practicing at FS in preseason and weeks 1-3 or intill CJ went down but he primarily played CB and only got a few snaps at safety.

Hieght isnt a big facter at S its weight
he ways around 190 and a typical starting Safety runs around 210-220+
short, stocky and fast make the best safety’s, kinda like the RBs of the defense, kinda.

short only works with an insane athlete (see Bob Sanders) most NFL personnel guys want a SS who is atleast 6’1
Troy Polamalu is 5-10. You got to be an insane athlete to make it in NFL anyway

In regard to resigning Tyvon, I hope he doesn't pull an Al Davis and signs him for 14 million dollars a year or so.
I hope "He" means reggie, i don't like he idea of mark choosing who we sign and don't

Correct, the "he" in that statement will be Reggie
He will be running the football side of the operation and I highly doubt there are going to be new exorbitant salaries like we’ve seen in the past around here and hopefully we’ll shed our selves of the ones we have now.
"Now I know what your thinking, did he fire six shots or only five. Ive forgotten myself in all this excitement, but being that this is the 44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and could blow your head clean off, you have to ask your question. Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk!"

agreed
i was looking at some of our of player salaries the other day, i think were giving up like 14 mil to carson, 8 mil to huff, i know we restructured wimbley but he was also like 7 mil. kelly has a huge contract, currys will be in the neighborhood of 7 mil. if were gonna take on these players and try to resurrect their careers we need to at least pay them what they deserve not what people thought they were gonna deserve when they signed them to these huge contracts.
True enough,
I think Reggie is going to have to sit down with some of these over paid guys (those guys include Wimbley, Routt, Huff, Seymour, Kelly, Palmer, Curry and McClain for sure and probably others Ive forgotten about) and give them the “it’s best for the team speech if you restructure” speech and if they balk? time to release them.
Even if we take a cap hit this year it will be better in the long run to have the guys that are so selfish and think of themselves before the team gone.
If they want to really be a part of the Raiders re-birth they’ll do it, if not…Bye!

Structuring really is appropriate.
As the most penalized team in history, with one of the poorest defensive performances ever, who do many of these Raiders think they are regarding their salaries? They are paid to perform, but they fell far short of their paid superstatus, and not just one or two of them – many of them. Just think, after this performance, how come we were like the highest salary team? I prefer reality. I mean, the Raiders are my team, but if they play average or poor, then pay them average or poor.

Doesnt he play good man to man?
i dont buy his “character” issues, or lack of character. Andre Johnson is more of a PAB if you ask me.
Dangerously? Yea.

I like Tyvon, I really do
but there are more pressing problems, like having the cap space to resign him or bring in free agent types.
we never retreat we always ATTACK!!!
I hate Tyvon, and the reason is that he has no signature hit, no signature play
nothing! He sucks plain and simple. He’s been a starter for a few years, and we have not one signature hit where he has caused a fumble or taken some out of the game. He can’t make plays on the ball either.
He should be on special teams and a backup safety. That’s it.
On other teams, you see guys like Donte Whitner, spectacular hit in the playoffs. That is what we need. A guy who can punish the opponent.
