The sad irony of yesterday was the 28th anniversary of a 38-10 victory over the Steelers enroute to SB XVIII. The day before that was 44th anniversary of 40-7 win in the AFL Championship game against Houston. Oakland then went on to SB II.
The pictures on Raiders.com reviews of the games show Jim Otto, Willie Brown, Lester Hayes, Ted Hendricks, Daryl Lamonica...all legends in the Raider's history. So many other names of Raiders' greats that are so recognizable. We have a rich history of division and SB Championships, wild plays, striking come from behind games, feared defenses and attacking offenses that other teams just dont have. We're fortunate that way..I mean, how about being a Falcon's fan and having your starkest Superbowl memory being Robinson burned by Smith deep the day after Robinson was busted for soliciting an undercover cop for a blow job? Or being a Bill's fan...0-4 in a row for the SB? Or Detroit, who finally have a team that resembles Night Train Lanes' 1957 Championship team. Only 54 years ago...
This year, the 10 defenders; 'missing man' formation against Houston after Davis died and the interception that clinched our victory was a game for the books. THAT was Raider's football!
It only made me sadder and physically sick during yesterdays game to know how amazing those other teams were in contrast to the clusterfuck of our loss to the Chargers. WTF happened to our season? After reading thru the post game thread and then the fanposts, the anger is pretty obvious and a lot of it is devastatingly on point. Some of it concerning player changes downright silly. This isnt fucking fantasy football. Get real.
What point am I making here...? I guess its just cathartic for me to put a voice to my expression of frustration. I have mantained the faith until yesterday, when it was as blatant as dog balls that the team was in deep shit, from bow to stern. I wrote a fanpost over two weeks ago entitled 'Fire Chuck Bresnahan' I meant it then and I hope to hell they fire him this week. The points I am avoiding are those arguments concerning the QB situation, certain players inability to play their positions, the myriad injuries and the 2012 draft. Inside the hurt locker after that game is painful enough. Did I mention firing Bresnahan?
And no matter how this season didnt twist our way even with all the curveballs thrown at us, Al passing, etc. we didnt come out like those old teams, we will ALL be back next season talking the same shit and expressing our hopes the 2012 season will be better. You really have to have a decent sense of irony to be a Raiders fan.
Looking forward to building more legends and memories in 2012....
