Oakland Mayor Proposes "Coliseum City", Includes a Stadium for Raiders
Finally some decent news about a possible stadium for the Raiders in Oakland! I came across an article on City Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan's website speaking of a proposal made by Mayor Quan for something dubbed Coliseum City. This is great news in my opinion just for the fact that Oakland is not just throwing in the white flag and letting us leave. They are at least trying to keep us where we belong, in Oakland CA.
It is an interesting plan, I suggest checking out the link above for a more detailed explanation of what they are trying to accomplish. The gist of it is that they are trying to get not one, not two, but three new stadiums built all next to each other on land the city already owns. That is correct, THREE new stadiums! They are trying to get a new stadium for us, the A's and the Warriors, and without them the teams might decide to relocate. The plan also includes a convention center, hotel and retail strip mall in an attempt to rival the L.A. Live area.
The Governor of California is not on board yet so it has a lot of work still to do. However, the fact that it is on land the City of Oakland already owns makes it possible for this to possibly proceed whether or not the Governor signs on. They apparently have already been contacted by six different private individuals interested in investing in the operation which also is a very encouraging sign.
Something else that caught my eye in the above linked article by Robert Gammon and Nate Seltenrich is the mention of the 49ers attempting to convince the Raiders to share their proposed new stadium. They don't go into anymore details than simply mentioning the possibility. I would much prefer to stay in Oakland, but if that is not going to happen then sharing a stadium with the Niners is the next best thing in my opinion.
They would remain in the Bay Area and still be called the Oakland Raiders which just sounds right. I know a lot of people are against this idea but I like it a lot better than moving to Los Angeles. The idea of sharing the maintenance costs of the stadium makes a lot of financial sense to me as well. Even if we move to LA we would probably be sharing a stadium with a different team anyway, so it might as well be the Niners in Northern California where they belong. Hopefully Coliseum City grows some legs and starts running, then we wont need to make that choice anyway!

The place they won more championships I consider to be where they belong
Its fine if you consider it to be L.A. but I wont ever consider that their true home. You can write a post arguing it if you want, it would be an interesting read even if I didnt agree.

Yep
At least till they cease being the Raiders. Case in point, Oiler fans aren’t Titan fans. Browns fans aren’t Ravens fans. If they move and become some other moniker, they will lose me.

If they changed from being the Raiders that would hurt a lot, its unimaginable and I dont know how id react to it.

those fans quit being fans because the teams left
Not because the name changed. If bud adams had left them as the tennessee oilers, the people of houston wouldn’t have said “ok then”
There are tons of raider fans everywhere, in LA especially, I won’t blame anyone in the slightest who maintains their loyalty. I wouldnt.
The Raiders truly have a national and international fanbase that would tolerate such a move WAY easier than any other team. Geographic affiliation isn’t as rabid here as it is elsewhere. Look at a map sometime of where the NFL teams are located. It is amazing how clustered they are together in the midwest and northeast.

The name changes a franchise
It is everything. I met this young dudes who thought the Ravens were an expansion team. Few people remember the Houston Oilers now that the Texans are there. I don’t care what city they go to, but once you lose the name of the franchise then its a different team. You think Raven fans give a shit they use to be the Browns? Nope, they moved on (or rather were abandoned a few years). I still know tons of Ram fans over here in Fresno, CA (home to the Raiders…….and niner fans). In the end, it is a business and when its time to press forward than it is time to press forward. Ideally I would love the Raiders to stay the Raiders at least till my death. But you never know. I won’t hate on a fan who leaves though, lot of people in LA were bitter when they left.

Like I said the raiders statewide and larger fan base makes them different
But if the browns had become the baltimore browns the people of cleveland wouldn’t have been any happier
Oakland is not getting another team is another difference. And anyone who suggests i am not a “true fan” because I would no longer support a team that leaves my area doesn’t know the first thing about my fanhood, and can eat a bowl of syphilitic cocks.

Nice. I agree. Although to be fair, no sports fan in cleveland is happy :P Like I said, I won’t hate. I don’t live in either Oakland or LA, but if they left I would be pissed. And please, this is a family blog, instead of bowl of syphilitic cocks I would say eat a bag of dicks. Its nicer and suggests the possibility that no bad dicks are within said bag (or full of it, you never know).

You realize people in Houston
HATE the Titans more than almost any other team in the league, right? A lot of older people from Baltimore still hate the Colts despite playing them once in a blue moon.
Taking a team from its home city can really rub the locals the wrong way.
lol imagine that! Somebody feel slighted because their team left them high and dry, taking all the income they help provide with them, making the fans upset! lol
There is no such thing as the “True Fan” argument anyway unless its applied to trolls that literally are not a fan of the team. We all love the team and that makes us all true fans, whether we share the same opinions is completely irrelevant!

No choice
Being a Niners fan is out of the question. Can’t stand those yuppy bastards. See’em sipping wine in tents before the game. wtf
To little to late
Jean Quan is a joke. The A’s are for sure leaving to San Jose. Oakland doesn’t even know how they would finance this “Coliseum City” yet, and it appears to be a move just to save face and for Oakland to be able to say, “At least we tried right?”
My best guess is the A’s move to San Jose in time for the 2015 season, the Raiders end up sharing a stadium with the 49ers, and Oakland ends up retaining the worst of the three franchises in the Warriors since Oracle Arena isn’t too shabby.
by Devyn on Jan 20, 2012 1:36 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
I would agree in this being probable, and I wouldnt mind horribly them sharing a stadium with the Niners. At least costs would be way less for maintenance.

Yeah, I don't see Oakland getting anything done
They have spent a decade hoping an A’s stadium would just appear somewhere in Oakland rather than making moves to keep them. I’d have to think in the end, there is just not enough in the Oakland budget to take on such a huge project. I see the Santa Clara situation as the most likely until they actually start building a stadium in L.A. At this time it seems the Santa Clara plan is moving forward.
"Today I step into the shoes of a great man, a man by the name of Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho."
To be honest, Oakland has bigger things to deal with right now.
It’s already a bad enough investment for a city as it is building a new state of the art stadium, but building three? There is just no way the city of Oakland could do it… It would be a disservice to the taxpayers of Alameda County.
Secretly I’m selfishly hoping that San Jose falls apart and the A’s decide to move to Portland so they can sell out every single game just like my Trailblazers do every single game.
You mean sell out every game
like the Sharks do
"Today I step into the shoes of a great man, a man by the name of Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho."
No he means sell out every game like the Lakers do.

Something like this though
Would generate enough revenue to help solve any other multiples of problems Oakland has. Also, I am sure the taxpayers of Alameda would like to keep their sports teams, and become a second coming of L.A. with the strip mall and what not. You have to pay them anyways and it sure beats using that money to build a new mansion for the mayor.
Sports teams generating city reveneu and boosting the local economy is an urban myth
That’s because Humphreys and colleague Dennis Coates, a professor of economics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, haven’t uncovered a single instance in which the presence of a professional sports team has been linked to a boost in the local economy.
"Our conclusion, and that of nearly all academic economists studying this issue, is that professional sports generally have little, if any, positive effect on a city’s economy," Humphreys and Coates wrote in a report issued last month by the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C. The institute commissioned the professors to study the economic impact of a deal proposed by Anthony Williams, the mayor of Washington, D.C.; under terms of the agreement, the Major Baseball League would move the Montreal Expos to the nation’s capital in exchange for a new, city-built ballpark.
One could say the money Oakland has already spent renovating it’s facilities for it’s sports teams still has Oakland in the red instead of the black.
I'd love it
The money and leadership are not there. We need to let Mark and Amy loud and clear that we want to share the Niners new stadium. Otherwise it is goodbye nor cal, goodbye “oakland raiders” forever
by lchristmas on Jan 20, 2012 4:29 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
I completely agree with you there, it makes the most sense if we cant get a stadium in Oakland to share one with the Niners.
Guaranteed the new stadium for them is going to be a modern marvel! Anything would be better than playing on a baseball diamond half the season, and moving to LA would be a whole different awful ball of wax imo. Although unlike you i would remain a fan anyway but part of that is definitely living so far away either way.

LA
I believe the unattractive part about moving to LA is they want part ownership in the team(s).
This sounds good if private funding and the NFL pitches in to build the stadium. I know the Redevelopment Agency was buying up land for a project, but did not know if the had to sell it as part of Redevelopment Agencies going away.
exactly
the people in nor cal want them to stay in norcal and the people in socal want them to come to so cal. Its not rocket science
alot of fans dont even live in California
I live in Nor Cal but It wouldn’t bug me that much if they moved to LA
Oakland is were they began so i believe its their true home

Yeah, but that's true anywhere
Shit, if Fresno could build a stadium I would love for them to move here. But Fresno sucks, I’m just being greedy and shit. I could drive to every game all the time :D Either way, LA or Oakland, as long as they stay the Raiders I’m fine with it. The moment they lose the name, then to me, the franchise is dead.

I'm a Raider fan in LA and would LOVE the Raiders to move to LA, but.....
I wont lie Oakland is the Raiders true home. No doubt. Los Angeles is like a the Raider time share or something. Not really home.
Dont get me wrong if they moved to LA i would be so freaking happy though.!
L.A. doesn't need the Raiders
It’s got more than enough going for it what with Hollywood, the beaches, the Lakers…damn near everything. If you could just get rid of the smog.

San Diego, LA area, central valley, and now I’m in Ohio WTF? even though I dont care for the idea of the team moving back to LA I would still be a fan. I was when they were there before and still am now. Win Lose or Tie Raiders ’til I die! But in my heart they have always been and will always be the Oakland Raiders!
