Welcome Dennis Allen, Head Coach of Our Oakland Raiders

"He must have a military background, that's the first thing I thought of. Must have been in the military or had that in his family background, some way or another. That's the way he carries himself," cornerback Andre Goodman said. "His thing is discipline, discipline, discipline. Do everything right, all the time, and never let up."

This is the quote from the Denver Post article by Lindsay H. Jones that Ghost Raider posted that really makes me excited about the future with Dennis Allen as our head coach. I know for a fact that I am not the only one that had their attention captured by that particular quote. Those are the kind of words that we need to hear our own players speaking about our new coach. Even more importantly than speaking those words is embracing them and having the effect of them show on the field.

I like this hire from Reggie McKenzie because it addresses the two major problems that cost us a shot at the playoffs this past year under Hue Jackson: Penalties and Defense. We needed this type of military discipline head coach to come in and make the players accountable. Each and every one of those players needs to know that bone head penalties are what cost us games.

When you extend a team's drive because you decided you needed to hit that Quarterback after he let go of the ball, you are handing that other team an extra opportunity. Anybody who does anything competitively knows that when you give your opponent an extra opportunity when they thought they were done you are going to pay for it. Now we seem to have a coach that is going to make sure that each player on our team knows that these things can not happen anymore. It is up to Allen to make sure that it is ingrained in our players in a way that it has never been. It is a tough job, hopefully he is the right man for it.

The fact that Dennis Allen is a defensive coach is a great thing for our next head coach though. Nothing says this is a different team more than doing something that has not been done since the 60's. It still leaves major questions unanswered about who is going to be running the offense. I have all my fingers and toes crossed that we can retain Al Saunders. Coming on to our team and showing the team he is willing to work with them by keeping their offensive coordinator would not be a bad way to gain the team's trust.

Al knows our players and can keep some continuity with our offense. He is a high intensity coach that would mix well with Allen's fast and aggressive style. Lets all hope that Dennis Allen will agree that this is the guy to run our offense, because (as recently pointed out to me by an excellent fellow poster Lakers007Raiders) too much change can definitely be detrimental. A whole new offense does not necessarily spell doom, but it does have a higher probability of failing in the first year of implementing it.

The thing that does disappoint me about this hire is that he is a rookie again. He is going to be making some of the same mistakes that we have despised for too long. That means there will be frustrating moments that veteran coaches might not have put us through. Oh well, there is nothing we can do now. This is the path that we have chosen and sometimes it works out pretty damn well, like Jim Harbaugh with our Bay Area rivals. Sometimes it does not as shown with our very own pinstripe suit wearing former coach Jackson.

The start of our new era arrives with Dennis Allen as Head Coach. Lets give him a warm welcome and hope that he is capable of solving our greatest weaknesses. He will have to learn quickly that the refs really do hate us and it will take extra clean play to wipe out many of the penalties that are called on the Silver and Black. You have a lot of work to do Mr. Allen, please give us your all and prove to the world that we belong back on top. We have been through way too much to start losing all over again.

Your logic regarding Saunders is right on.

It sounds like Allen can bring the discipline the Raiders need to stop all of those penalties. What he did in one season with the Donk defense looks promising, but hopefully won’t be one of those single-year wonders. He is a rookie and may be a bust, but if he is not, he sure is young and might be with the Raiders a long time.

I agree I have been a proponent of keeping Saunders

Fix the D this year! then start thinking about the O after the D improves!

A massive effort was put into last year's offense and appears ready to perform with the right coaching.

What is now needed is the same attention be paid to the defense to bring them up to standard. Some parts of the defense need fixing, such as linebacking, etc. but with good coaching it is possible that we can fill in gaps with free agents since the draft is depleted. The defense is not in bad shape, just needs a few wise decisions to be made with them and a whole lot of discipline that hopefully Allen can bring.

Eh

Not a huge splash in the coaching world. On the positive, I like the defensive minded coaching approach. Hopefully he brings in a solid DC, and get rid of some me first players. And perhaps lower Routt’s pay day (as he didn’t really deserve it after last season). And perhaps do something with McClain. The Bronco’s D kept them in games, so hopefully he can work some magic over here. I like the keep Saunders as OC stuff, IMO that will keep the offense from regressing. On the negative, rookie head coaching mistakes will be an issue yet again. He was only a DC for one year and the improvement was from last to 20th in yards, not bad but not great. He is a unproven guy, will the players respond to him as the new HEAD Coach? Also, and this part is curable, he was a Donkey and therefore he smells. As I’ve said before, no matter the hire I’m down for him. Wish him luck (as he will need it) and I look forward to not leading the league in penalties. Now please, can we fire Bres already? Seriously. Good post.

I would be happy if we don't just rehire him

Al Saunders is the only current coordinator/coach/assistant under contract.

From what I have read all those not under contract have not been allowed back in the building the last few days.

Welcome to the Raiders Mr Allen

Together we hope our goals and expectations will be metfor a long bright future. You will be taking over a young team with some veteran leaders who are willing to work hard to reach the Super Bowl together.

Allen’s a good coach, but he has a LOT to prove still. It’s going to be a huge responsibility change for him. There’s going to be bumps, will Davis/McKenzie give him time to grow like the raiders did for your other 1000 new coaches over the last 10 years? Looking forward to watching you get Tebowned 2x next year! Good luck in the draft!

Another example of why Donkey fans are arrogant pricks

Its funny how Raiders fans get the reputation of being rude, but we never troll on other teams blogs. On the other hand, Donkey fans are here all the time disrespecting us! Don’t feel bad for us, we have a good team. The Donkeys have some talent, but they need to a QB. If you base your whole franchise on a guy like Tebow, who is literally a full back playing quarterback, then you’re the one that’s gonna need the good luck.

"these things can not happen anymore".....For This Reason New Blood Is Prolley A Damn Good Thing???

If we just brought in a man who had played our game before it would likely be a case of tolerance for our continued stupidity and lets face it most of us “Old Time” Raider fans rather love those extra aggressive hits after the whistle!!!…But not so when we bring in an outsider who isn’t tolerant of this stupidity in the least….Things may really change???…And that my friends may just be the difference between being an “Also Ran” and a legitimate “PO” Contender…

Keeping that top 10 “O” is imperative…Thus we only have one half our team that needs to be addressed with a total makeover this next season instead of the entire roster…The “O” can most certainly be tweaked to perform at a higher level and with a full off season of prep it certainly should…

My one and only real fear at this point is commitment?….Is this just a “Stepping Stone” opportunity for a very young and very aggressive up and coming “HC” or will he actually have sticking power and an attachment to OakTown or wherever the Raiders end up playing?…Please NO MORE Grudens who’s ambitions are bigger than thier loyalties!!!…..Please NO More "Rat"s who took a job despite their ingrained hate for our Raider Nation!!!

Raiders | Dennis Allen named head coach

Tue, 24 Jan 2012 18:07:58 -0800

Updating a previous report, the Oakland Raiders named Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen as their new head coach Tuesday, Jan. 24. Allen informed the Broncos he was taking the head coaching position Tuesday. He becomes the first Raiders head coach with a defensive background since the late Al Davis promoted John Madden from linebackers coach in 1969.

Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie has found a new head coach, FOXSports.com has learned.

Former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has reached an agreement to lead the Silver and Black in the 2012 season, but contract details still must be hammered out.

Need based hire.

The penalties were embarrassing on all levels and we too often gave up big runs. Keeping Saunders on the offence is the key to this hire from a continuity perspective. I’d like to see an older veterant DC. The idea would be to have 2 veterant coordinators for the rookie coach to lean on. we need to give him a chance and see what happens.

Not the hire I would have thought...

Because while he is/was ‘up and coming’, that is a label and description used on people who have done well in limited opportunities, i.e., not much experience. That is not necessarily a bad thing, there are plenty of examples of guys with that label who have done quite well, but there are also plenty of examples of guys who weren’t ready or just not capable of making the jump. I would have preferred someone with a longer track record of proven accomplishment, but it is what it is.

I hope that Allen does well, that he brings in a DC that will help get the defense on track, someone to continue the improvements that the offense has begun, and that he will start to turn the corner on penalties and discipline (even just 3-4 fewer penalties per game to start will help).

Now that the initial waiting period is over, we start with the next, to find out who will be brought in for his staff. That is just about as important as the hiring of the HC…

by signcut on Jan 25, 2012 9:26 AM PST reply actions

And the GM has decided...

its Dennis Allen.Lets just wait and see who this guy brings with him before we start deciding if this is a good hire or bad. I like the fact this guy is Defensive minded and alot of very good pros think highly of him. Champ, Sharper, and the guy he picked up, Dawkins, while Hue and Chuck let him go off waivers, along with Sterling Moore. Im prior service ARMY, so you know I love me some Hard nose discipline, and this team needs plenty of it. He’s also going to weed out that defense. I think he will keep Rod Woodson as an assistant. Rod knows multiple coverages and always knew how to adjust. Keeping Al Saunders is likely, but maybe this guy is buds with the Saints’ Carmicheal? Who knows what this guy is going to bring with him.

by LaRaider on Jan 25, 2012 9:33 AM PST reply actions

Doubtful

I think the logical thing with the offense as it is, which was pretty effective, is to retain Saunders. Let Saunders run the offense while Allen himself focuses on the problem area, the defense. That would take a huge burden off the HC..Allen’s hire tells us that McKenzie obviously feels the defense was unacceptable. Penalties go hand in hand, as 99% were defensive. I don’t see Pete Carmichael coming to Oakland as OC, regardless of any relationship with Allen. Why would he leave that Saints offense to be an OC somewhere else? What does that gain him? Nothing. He may very well have jumped ship to accept the HC job, but for an OC position he might as well stay put.

by RaiderJoe on Jan 26, 2012 6:47 AM PST up reply actions

rookie coach

Rookies can often add a bit of flash and dynamite…. suppose Allen focuses on special teams and the kick RETURN game—we’ve got the players, now how about a dynamic system for getting those BIG returns EVERYTIME! It’s good that he’s a rookie HC that is defensive minded—-the defense can stop scoring and score as well! Denver always seemed to be able to score on our offense! Let’s turn the tables and lead the league in scoring defense as well as offense! Discipline on the Oakland Raiders? What would that have meant all these years? How many more super bowls would the Raiders have won/been in? If discipline will actually happen, eventually, eventually, and again eventually the bad calls will even out… No more immaculate reception… No more no fumble… No more tuck… Just imagine how many more games the Raiders will win!!! It’ll be back to the winningest team in Football! Now, all he has to do is get the buy-in from the players… GO ROOKIE!

"He knew how to get us ready," Bailey said. "I give him a lot of credit for the success we had this year.

wondered how the Raiders’ move would affect his play next season — “He knows me,” the Broncos’ rookie linebacker said — but he shared Bailey’s view that Oakland made a good hire.

“First and foremost, they’re getting a guy that’s going to come in right away, and he’s going to get it done,” Miller said. "That’s what he did for us. He came in, he laid out a plan for us, he told us, ‘This is how we’re going to do it, and this will work,’ and that’s what happened. We improved our defense an incredible amount. It was a night and day team from a year before.

Well then

Welcome to Oakland, Mr. Allen.

Considering that he’s a defensive-minded coach, I think it’s a good hire. We need someone who can carry out the defense and reduce those penalties that we keep taking. Let’s hope he can do well for us.

Our offense has way more fire power then Denver.

The Denver D kept them in the game long enough for Tebow Time to get there. If our defense can play like that and not let a high scoring game we can win a championship IFit’s a big if. If Palmer continues to improve with Moore, Bey, and Ford. AND Dmac has to stay healthy. If Tebow has a healthy Mcfadden behind him I think they go to a superbowl.

they dont want a 3-4

they hired allen because he did well with the 4-3. I dont think they have any plans of switching. I would like to see Spagano’s hybrid with the Raiders though

by dawad34 on Jan 25, 2012 12:05 PM PST up reply actions

Practical

I agree. I think McKenzie was familiar with the 3-4 in Green Bay, but currently Oakland really doesn’t have the personnel to effectively run the 3-4. He saw that and knew he couldn’t bring in at least 6 new defensive starters That’s not practical.

by RaiderJoe on Jan 26, 2012 6:59 AM PST up reply actions

The problem is

They don’t have the personnel to effectively run the 4-3 either.

by LouisMurphy'sLaw on Jan 26, 2012 7:49 AM PST up reply actions

3-4 sounds like easy solution

I get what you mean.I’m saying specifally that probably Seymour is the only one (starter anyway) with 3-4 experience. But the team/coach/GM can’t just dump all these players and bring in an entire new starting line-up of new players that can execute the 3-4.Nobody does that. Can’t affrord it for one.On the other hand, Rob Ryan tried to install the 3-4 his first season as DC using the existing players . More like tried to shoehorn it in. We all know Al Davis favored the 4-3,that’s just a fact. So then as now all the defensive players on the roster were guys reflected that. Ryan tried to force them to switch to the 3-4 and it depite a valiant effort. it failed.Sapp couldn’t play NT worth a damn, the LBs were too big and slow, etc. Dennis Allen is a 4-3 guy. The DC will run the 4-3 . count on it.

by RaiderJoe on Jan 26, 2012 10:59 AM PST up reply actions

I just don't think they can run the 4-3 effectively with Wimbley at strongside linebacker

His tackle numbers are really low because he’s constantly focusing on the pass rush. He’s too small to play DE, but still our most talented pass rusher. With how horrible we were at getting to the QB, I’d rather have him at his natural rush OLB in a 3-4.

I also think that McClain lack of ability to cover the middle of the field will be benefited by moving Curry or another ILB next to him.

That’s why I want the 3-4. I realize not every 4-3 formation is going to be the press-man (almost reckless) variety that the Raiders have been running for the past couple years, but I honestly think the personnel right now is more suited for a 3-4.

by LouisMurphy'sLaw on Jan 26, 2012 11:21 AM PST up reply actions

I comepletey agree, bro. This is why I think we’ll make the move to the 3-4 as well. What do you think about Shaughnessy playing OLB? I think we’d have to bring in a vetran 3-4 OLB to make the transition a little bit better, but otherwise the move should work pretty well.

by JaKe. on Jan 26, 2012 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

thats why running the hybrid 3-4/4-3 works well

we have the personnel to run that and adapt during the game and play the strength.

Just like the frekin NBA, this is another league that will dictate who will win or lose a game. I frekin swear, i watch the first round of this years’ playoffs with so little penalties, its rediculous. I can spot dozens of would be holding penalties that would consitently be called on teams such as the SnB or Steelers. WHEN YOU KILL A DEFENSIVE UNITS’ SPIRITS TIME AND TIME AGAIN ON 3RD AND LONG EARLY IN THE SEASON (Buffalo game for example) its no wonder they end up losing there confidence. AGAIN, I’m hoping that the transition to new owner Mark Davis will end the league’s feud over the team. And AGAIN, FU!K THE NFL!

Agreed

I could understand if we were the worst in penalties this year because we had some bad ones.
But worst in NFL HISTORY?
That is ref bias, NO QUESTION!
49ers get away with MURDER anytime they want.
When they hit a qb or receiver they get applause.
We get yellow flag and give up a first down.
Sickening referees.
My only hope is now that Al is gone they can stop the bias.

there was an article written somewhere a while back

about how referee bias was the one and only logical statistical explanation for the Raiders leading the league in penalties for umpteen (13? 14?) years in a row.

different coaching staffs, completely different rosters, lots of players who play the majority of their careers elsewhere… it doesn’t matter. put on the silver and black and out come the flags.

there really is no argument that the bias doesn’t exist – hopefully now that Al (RIP) is gone it will at least get a little less painfully obvious

PFT: Colts to name Pagano as coach
Posted Mike Florio on January 25, 2012, 4:12 PM EST

On Tuesday, a guy who spent one year as a defensive coordinator was hired to be the new head coach of the Raiders. On Wednesday, word has emerged that a guy who spent one year as a defensive coordinator will be hired to be the new head coach of the Colts.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano will accept the job.

Pagano, 51, spent the 2011 season as the coordinator of the Ravens defense, after spending three seasons as the team’s secondary coach. He also has coached with the Browns and Raiders at the NFL level, and at various colleges, including the University of Miami, East Carolina, UNLV, Boise State, and USC.

He displayed an infectious smile and a sharp sense of humor when introduced as Baltimore’s defensive coordinator last year. “I had a great experience, or sentence,” Pagano said at the time regarding a prior stint with the Raiders. “Well, I can’t say sentence, a two-year sentence in Oakland. And congratulations to Hue Jackson, it’s well deserved. And he will earn every cent that they pay him. It won’t be much, but he will earn every nickel. But I had a great experience out there. And two years was plenty.”

To get him in position to be a head coach, one year as a defensive coordinator was plenty.

And if Pagano displayed that kind of charm and wit at his interview with Jim Irsay, the two men surely hit it off.

F that guy

Wouldn’t doubt that he’d just straight hang up on Reggie if he was called. All these Baltimore DC’s get hyped and then when they venture out of the Ravens nest – nada. Sure Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan and Rex Ryan got buzz in their first year or 2 but they eventually get exposed. Not sure what Indy is thinking anyway. The got The Lucky Ticket in the coming draft and they go with a defensive guy? Wouldn’t be surprised if they hire HueJax as their OC or QB coach next..

A guy that has played 1 snap with a fumble...

We drafted him in the 3rd round now we could trade him for a higher pick? Flawed logic!

Al Davis the Greatest Raider of all times... You will live forever in the hearts of true Raider fans...RIP

by samiam2112 on Jan 25, 2012 2:34 PM PST up reply actions

But no one was looking like they were ready to jump at the opportunity to grab him in the supplemental draft

A lot of people thought the Raiders could have probably gotten him later than the 3rd round in that. Seems pretty unlikely that the guy would suddenly attract tons of attention now and go for more than what we got him for.

by Chris2814 on Jan 25, 2012 9:07 PM PST up reply actions

This is incorrect

the consensus was he was going to be taken in the 4th round. The Raiders didn’t have a 4th rounder, having given that up in the Campbell trade with Washington. They had to have intel that someone was going to pounce on Pryor in the 4th and didn’t want to lose out on a guy they saw as a first round talent.

I doubt there’s a big market for Pryor, and we would likely take a loss in the transaction. Most of the players I’d like to see moved cost too much to move. We’ll see what Reggie does, but I’m still not 100% that they don’t cut/trade Palmer…and try to move Big Dick, too…

Having Campbell as a back up to Palmer would be awesome. The fact that he has publicly stated he has no interest in being a back-up, that he is a starter, ends that discussion. That and how much money he would cost.

I can't imagine that JC will be able to find a starting job anywhere, so we may as well keep him.

He’s the best backup we could hope to have. I’ll be damned if I ever see Kyle Boller take another snap for the Silver and Black.

by Jason Scarbrough on Jan 25, 2012 10:15 PM PST up reply actions

Both Boller and Campbell are free agents. Contracts expired as Al Davis didn’t sign either to extensions. Boller will not be re-signed, count on that. Campbell will test the FA market. We will see if he gets a chance somewhere. I could see him landing in Seattle, Tavaris Jackson isn’t the answer.

The presence of John Fox

mitigates Allen’s loss to an extent, because he’s a defense guy, too. The chance that Fox reunites with Del Rio, to some people would be considered an upgrade, though Del Rio is an option in Oakland, too.

The Tebow lovefest of last season ignored the fact that in all but two of Denver’s wins with Tebow under center, they didn’t give up 20 points. If Tebow didn’t make mistakes, Denver had a chance to win because they could run the ball and the defense got after your QB. For those of you new here, that was supposed to be our mantra in 2011

And in other news...

Art Shell will be back this year, bringing along his bed and breakfast offense. The Raiders have also put JC and Palmer on the trading block, citing that their 40 times were too slow for the organization. Jawalrus will be back in camp this year to develop TP, and act as a mentor to the younger players….

I mean seriously, what the fuck did this team just do? How do you justify hiring someone with no HC experience, and the highest position he has held was a one year run as a DC for a team that had the 24th ranked defense? Was Art Shell not returning calls???? This absolutely blows my mind to think that this organization thought that this guy was the best person available. No calls out to any of the proven guys, or even successful guys. Just this guy whom called a defense that was barely better than Dumb Fuck Chuck did in Oakland last year! BARELY BETTER! Would you have considered Panda as a HC candidate? Then why would this idiot be in the hunt? Did the Raiders set the bar at “you must have a defense that is 25th or better” which just cut panda out of the loop????

So much for losing the tag of “laughing stock of pro sports”. Hell even the Clippers are getting it right these days.

you have to be kidding

first by spitting facts that are not true….they were the 20th ranked D, and he did a HELL of a job…Chuck came in with a Raider D that was ranked 11th and broke it to be 27th, Allen went to Denvers 32nd ranked D and made them climb 12 spots….that is where you see the difference….its funny how you think you know that it is in fact a bad call. When you dont understand a single thing about Xs and Os….he is a rookie yes…so was Madden, so was Gruden, so was Bellechick, so was Cowher, and on and on….pisses me off how you will come back praising this guy after he has had some success with us, claiming you supported him, this is where the real fans are put to test. You wanted a GM?? Here is your freaking GM, now get used at how football is managed and see the results of what you asked for…GO RAIDERS

Not only did he improve their D 12 spots – he did it in one year with no off season. That’s pretty impressive to me.

The Autumn wind is a Raider Pillaging just for fun He'll knock you 'round and upside down And laugh when he's conquered and won

by LoveItHateIt on Jan 25, 2012 3:59 PM PST up reply actions

well here is my factual based retort

This guy’s D was 4 spots in front of Panda on scoring D and ranked at 24th. I used this stat, because ultimately scoring is what wins games not overall total yardage. But as for yardage, his D was 9 spots ahead of Panda on total D, 5 spots better in rushing D, 9 spots better in passing D, and had a whopping 2 more sacks than the Raiders under Panda. The Raiders shitty secondary had twice as many INTs and the Raiders had only 6 less fumbles. Their D was NOT THAT GOOD! Even if I look at it from your point of view, is 20th best good enough for you? SERIOUSLY????

I am not sure where your statement “When you dont understand a single thing about Xs and Os” comes from, but it does show who is stating statements based upon no facts. I am also confused about this statement: “pisses me off how you will come back praising this guy after he has had some success with us, claiming you supported him”. How are you coming up with these facts???

Another good one:“You wanted a GM??”… When did I say this? Didn’t they already have an acting GM in AL?

Get a grip with your attacking responses which are ultimately the ones which are without fact. Madden had HC experience in college. Belichick was a DC in NY before HC of the browns. Cowher was a DC with the chiefs. Chucky was an OC with the niners. ALL had success in their previous positions while I hate to say, 20 in total yardage, or 24th in scoring is not what I would consider successful.

But answer this question. If this guy was so well suited for the position, why was he not publicly called out to be on anyone else’s list for HC?

by TD Rader on Jan 25, 2012 4:07 PM PST up reply actions

He was on the Rams list

And you will deny it as much as you want, but we all know we all wanted a GM, we did have one in Al, but I am so sure you wanted a new GM, you are just dennying it to defend your cause….All of those coaches you mentioned were coordinators, just as Allen, sorry by saying Bellechick, I meant Billick. You keep argumenting his Defensive rankings, again, he took a 32nd ranked D to 20th or 24th, either way, you have to admire how he climbed those spots. I just dont get why you have to be so negative about the new coach, either way, you end up in the losing side by being so bitter…..you will be crying about him all offseason while others hope for the best, sorry for you that you will have a sad offseason, Im looking forward to success.

Agreed

Anyone remember 59-14? How the Donks defense was again supposed to be the worst ever?

Couple that with the anecdotal comments about the guys passion and aptitude for the game and I am glad to give him a chance. Certainly makes more sense than pronouncing it a failure before he even sets foot in the state.

by lchristmas on Jan 25, 2012 5:18 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

much better

thank you for your respectful reply, it was much better than the first. I am not arguing one bit that the guy has something, or he wouldn’t have been an option. My dislike of this hire is due to the fact that of all organizations, this one is the LAST one that needs to be reaching for someone, and this guy undoubtably IS a reach. Bringing a defense up 12 spots is not that big of a feat. He had Dumerville this year (hurt all last year), along with a couple of great newcomers in Von Miller and Bunkley. Even Carter was new. So it is not as if he was the only reason for the surge. There were changes in personnel too. Denver’s offense also kept the ball longer each game (avg went up a minute per game), due to the #1 rushing offense in the NFL.

Though I ultimately hope Allen does well, you have to admit that based upon his resume’, the odds are very low he will do well, and lower that he will do well quickly.

by RaiderPride20 on Jan 26, 2012 11:08 AM PST up reply actions

Here's my take

the fact that he got the Donkeys defense to that level after getting destroyed physically in week one, and having Orton give the ball away before essentially starting a rookie QB. Look at it this way, when Tebow didn’t turn the ball over, his defense gave up high of 15 points, and forced clutch turnovers to help beat the Bears, Jets, Viqueens, and US. The defense was up and down, but you can usually trace that to the play of the offense, too.

we never retreat we always ATTACK!!!

As bad as the D was...

…we would have won at least two more games if not for KILLER penalties and made the playoffs, maybe with the 3 seed. Not saying we would have done anything when we got there, but for this team, just getting there is something, right?

Penalties was the biggest problem…and why Hue got spiked…and what was the immediate change needed.

Worse than the raw, record number of penalties/penalty yardage was this: 58 penalties that led to drive extending first downs. 58. 58. Nearly FOUR PER GAME. Blech.

Allen’s Donkey-D only had 32. If we only committed 32 D penalties that led to opponents’ first downs…finish the sentence.

It looks like we can surely use of of those guys. San Fran basically has the same roster as last year…. the one big difference for them is the head coach. The Raiders can definitely surprise some people next year…. we have a good number 1 receiver in DHB (Congrats my dude), a strong running attack with DMC? and Bush?, a QB that actually plays to win the game ( as to JC who plays to not ruin the game), nice D-line, nice Linebackers, an average secondary (Finnegan anyone???), and the best special teams unit in the league. and it’s not just who is saying it and how willfully they give it up, but what they’re saying that so excites me for his and our future.

I also believe that Allen will fit perfectly in the system McKenzie hopes to build wherein all staffers not only know their jobs, but their boundaries as well. Things will be hard to recognize around here pretty much, but so long as it brings what I think it will—wins—I’m pretty stoked with the hire and look forward to the offseason and immediate future.

likewise...and I'm actually surprised with so many people getting upset over Hue being dismissed.

The only thing he had going for himself were his playbook and his gutsy calls. Other than that, he had no respect from his players, broke the record in penalties, had a D that almost allowed the other team steal a W in all eight wins, gave way too much for CP, etc. You can’t blame Mark for wanting to start his era with his own men. I’m happy with Mark’s direction; its closure of what Al had going prior to his passing, including the feud he had created with the league. And as Hue would often start his sentences, " AT THE END OF THE DAY, it doesn’t matter what all of you so called professional critiques think, because if we did, this team would be ran like a circus.

I go by the season

Players see these coaches come and go all the time. They grow to like some, and hate some. Hell, Rivers really likes Norv Turner. A players feelings mean nothing to me in terms of a good coach. Even Kiffen got some love prior to his stint in Oakland. I expect people to say the right things right now. When the ship starts to sink (and I hope that doesn’t happen) that’s when the truth comes out. I’m happy to have a coach, but Dennis Allen hasn’t proven anything yet. He is a huge unknown like Kiffen and we will all see the results of his coaching. At this point, I can’t see us making playoffs next year. However, I would love to be wrong in this case. I’m looking for improvement in the defense, what he does with the offense, penalties, and if McKenzie is serious in terms of being patient. If another coach gets fired, we are fucked. But I’m all for giving DA a chance and I hope he does well.

You obviously haven’t, as a fan, experience the letdown of the Oakland locals when Al deserted them, the LA locals when Al deserted them. You may not even know the long standing feud and court battles between Al and the League, or the 10$ million dollars he stole from Irwindale. Did you guys even know he had Marcus Allen benched for a whole season as a result of Al’s paranoia? Or the fact that Gruden was the one that asked for a trade because he too realized the league wasn’t going to allow the SnB to win the big one? We witnessed 10 pathetic years not because we had a owner that didn’t want to win or invest in players. Its because no one wanted to coach under him, the league hated him, and he had become a cancer to the league.
There is no doubt Al was a great man and a passionate man, but as an acting general manager he lost control of his strengths and he burned way too many bridges. I’m looking forward to this new era. Marc strikes me as a good owner and good son, he’ll do better than what his dad did in the last 30 years. 82…30 damn years.

I've only really been a Raiders fan since their return to Oakland

Because that was around the time I started really paying attention to the NFL as a kid. But I will say that I have seen some glorification of Al Davis since his death. Don’t get me wrong, I think he was pretty awesome and did tons of great things for the sport, but from 2003 to 2009 this team was a complete mess. And there’s no one really to blame other than Al Davis.

And I still don’t understand what happened between him and Marcus Allen. Benching a Super Bowl MVP for a whole season? Crazy. Plus, I’ve heard people talking about some issues he ended up having with Tim Brown. And that pisses me off because Tim Brown was practically the reason I became a Raiders fan.

Again, I don’t want to make it seem like I’m an Al hater. Far from it. I love the Raiders. And Al was the Raiders. But like you said, the guy burned tons of bridges. As a fan, he pissed me off on multiple occasions over the last decade. But I stood behind the team and I’m going to keep standing behind them in this new era. Reggie and Coach Allen have my full support. Everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves.

As a young man growing up, there were things my dad and i didnt see eye to eye on. We had differences but yet I'm not disregarding the fact he raised me into a strong man..

And when he passed away, there is no other person (besides my mom)that misses him more.
So with that being said, there are many of you delusional Raider fans that choose not to ack.owlege the many mistakes he has made, including making enemies with the same people that dictate how many times they choose to penalize them. AND YES, I KNOW MY FACTS….and pantyraider, Marcus allen was benched while Bo Jackson was tearin shiit up. And Al benched him because he thought Allen was faking injuries. But thats neither here nor there. And another thing, if your dad called you out in front of a group of people and rediculed you, wouldn’t you want to wipe the slate and put your mark in this org? I dont know about you guys but I’m 100% behind Mark Davis, yes the same guy some of you have been criticizing, you damnn hypocrits. And I bet hell do a better job than Al did his last 30 years.

I havent heard too many people criticize Mark Davis besides about his bowl cut/mullet hybrid hair style

Just about everybody is on board with Mark and expect him to succeed and put his own stamp on the organization. Nothing wrong with that. I do not think he fired Hue because he saw him be ridiculed though, I think McKenzie did not want Hue as his head coach and it was really that simple.

"We want to win. The Raider fans deserve it. The Raider players deserve it, even my organization deserves it. You have to win and you have to win with a vision for the Super Bowl. That's our passion here."--Al Davis

by Marcus Allen Krause on Jan 26, 2012 6:05 PM PST up reply actions

Too many unanswered questions about Mark

that nobody even wants to ask to have blind faith in the man.

If he’s really a business guy, then why isn’t he in Amy Trask’s position? Why is it she not him that represented the team at owner’s meetings when Al was not well enough to travel? Hell, why isn’t he more like her period if he’s not going to be like Al? Why did Al choose not to have him involved in anything serious? And since he never had any real status in the organization until now, what’s he been doing all these years, hidden out of sight (and perhaps out of mind)? (Supposedly working on getting a new stadium deal, but that never happened) Why was/is he so reluctant to talk to the press even when Al had passed on? Why is he so reluctant to run the team even now, appointing a GM with absolute power so he doesn’t have to be bothered? That “mysterious thing” worked for Al because he’s a legend, but what’s Mark’s excuse? If he didn’t want to run the team, why didn’t he go the Randy Lerner route and hire a President (preferably experienced) as well as a GM?

These are basically rhetorical questions, don’t really need to be answered, but they’re worth considering.

by rightnasty on Jan 26, 2012 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

He doesn't have to be half the football guy his dad was. You look at other teams and the owners' role is hidden in the shadows. Great leadership is having great people around you...and having confidence in your people.

During Reggie’s news conference, i admired the fact that Mark admitted he isn’t a "football"guy. That was a plus. Second, he hired the guy his sources (Madden and Wolfe) recommended. That was another plus.
I guess you’re right, we don’t know too much about him, but so far I think he has made some good moves. And besides Jerry Jones, how many other NFL owners do we know of that chooses to be involved in Personnel and football related maneuvers. As far as I’m concerned, the only thing an owner should be useful in is the willingness to invest in players and talent (Jerry Buss for example).

He's a rich kid who inherited everything and never had to do jack shit

That isn’t a criticism BTW.

He knows it (and its not to say he isn’t intelligent and witty because I believe he has clearly showed that)

All he needs to do is hire the right people and write checks. He understands his role. Some of the worst owners in sports have been “businesspeople” who wanted to get their hands dirty.

I like Mark. I like his haircut and his jumpsuits too. I’d like to hang out with him, slam down a bunch of cocktails and chase some cougars in his car, which i assume is some kind of 70’s pimp van, modernized, with a kegerator in back

Funny how some donkey fans are down playing the loss and are now giving all the credit to their run game and teblow. While the run game was a huge factor, so was the defense. It was not elite but at times it was very good and aggressive. I think allen will do fine here. He’s the type of coach this damn team needs!!! I support him as I supported the coaches before him. The fallout with Hue was disappointing for a while till he kept running his mouth. That’s the past and this is now. Welcome allen and here’s to a long successful stint in oaktown!

They are retarded if they think that

Tebow did help them come back and win a few games with a touchdown or get them down the field where they could kick a field goal to win. There in lies the fact that the defense never let them get down by more then 7 ponts. So I think the defense deserves far more credit for keeping the game close for 55 min then tebow would come in and steal the glory in the last five min. If we would of had that def we would of won at least 10 games.

Denis Allen will hoefully shore up the two main problems our 2011 team had, penalties and defense. I think this is a real fresh start, wich Reggie was obviouslly going for. Now i want to see what happens at OC and DC, cause that is where we can start to predict the team we will have. Im not sold on bringing back Saunders, but keeping him wouldnt be bad either. Kinda pissed that now that we got Allen, Del Rio is possibly headed to denver..Id like DeL Rio to be our DC if anything. While I appreciate the turn around they had and all…I give that credit to Allen. I know he would like to have familiar faces around him and maybe even the few guys that have already worked under him. I think a rookie HC with 1 years experience as a DC could really use some stronger presences at the coordinators position.

I understand he wants a guy to execute his vision but I think some diversity would do him well in his first season.

Report: Allen signs 4-year contract
Dennis Allen signed a four-year contract to coach the Raiders, according to Kate Longworth of CSN Bay Area.

Allen and Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie reached agreement on a contract Tuesday night in Mobile, Ala., where Allen interviewed for the second time.
The Raiders still have not confirmed the hiring. CSN says the introductory news conference is scheduled for Monday. Given the news conference will be broadcast on CSN, it’s a safe bet to say the Raiders have confirmed it to CSN.
McKenzie returned to Alameda on Wednesday. Allen should be through checking out pro prospects in Mobile today of Friday.
Allen could not be reached for comment. Two Raiders officials said they cannot confirm Allen signing a contract.

Oakland Raiders: Dennis Allen
New GM Reggie McKenzie went against conventional Raider wisdom by choosing a defensive coach to head up the team. Allen comes highly recommended, even though he has only been a coordinator for one year and is now the youngest head coach in the league. But he is impressive and has a command of his players. The Raiders must be patient with Allen and think long-term as he grows into the job. It will take Allen time to learn on the job, but if the Raiders give a chance, he could be their coach for the next 10 years.

I knew our defense played like crap this season but i didn't realize it was that bad

From BSPN:

The Raiders are coming off one of their worst defensive seasons ever. Oakland had franchise worsts in touchdown passes allowed (31), yards per carry (5.1), yards passing (4,262) and total yards (6,201), while giving up the third-most points (433) in team history.

The Raiders joined this year’s Tampa Bay team as one of the four teams to allow at least 30 TD passes and 5.0 yards per carry in a season, a distinction last reached by the 1952 Dallas Texans. The Raiders also became the sixth team since the 1970 merger to allow at least 2,000 yards rushing and 4,000 yards passing in a season.

Oh and the injuries….i’m impressed by the potential our team has….

yeah i read that too and wrote a post because of it. Pretty disgusting to have set 4 different franchise records for bad performances and come close to a 5th (For the Defense)

I really hope Dennis has what it takes to improve our D

We have a lot of talented players on that side of the ball, they just need someone to light a fire under their asses and put them in position to make plays

by Raider Roy on Jan 27, 2012 5:03 PM PST up reply actions

I have little doubt he can do that; my hope is he can be a great HC, and improve all aspects of our squad

and field a real team like a great coach can, wherein one phase always steps up when the others don’t, and everyone feeds off one another.

That quote from Madden on how a specialist must learn to wear the new hat when he’s promoted to HC is what I’d like to see, and from what I’ve gathered, he appears Coughlinesque in instilling discipline and accountability, attributes from which we all know this squad could benefit tremendously.

Every young coach goes through it. Good that we’re a franchise with a history of doing some great things with young but proven talent. There’s also a degree of chemistry and luck in every situation a new coach steps into that is perhaps as much arbitrary and serendipitous (or not!) as it is dictated by the many actions an organization can take to achieve success.

But alas, it has been a long, long time since the football gods have looked with kind eyes upon our silver and black, and maybe, just maybe, it’s high time for that to happen again. One thing I think McKenzie will attempt to do is create an environment that minimizes to the best of our ability that which we don’t control and remains focused fundamentally on the things we can, something that Hue struggled with despite doing very well with the hand he was dealt.

""The massive Raider Nation is beyond doubt the sleaziest and rudest and most sinister mob of thugs and wackos ever assembled."--Hunter S. Thompson
"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and fuck -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get fucked. Someday, the Raiders will be strong again, and they will dip the ball in shit and shove it down the throats of the wholesome, white, heartland teams that pray together and don't deliver late hits." - George Carlin.

.As It Stand Right Now We be In Some Deep Do-Do I Fear!!!/_

Simple truth..We have had some continuity over the past 3 seasons even though there have been turnovers in the "HC"s…

“09”…Cable was already here and had spent a half season as interim “HC” prior to his 1st season…

“10”…Cable remained “HC” as Hue was brought in as “OC” as well as Marsh as “DC”…

“11”…Hue took over as “HC” after having served as “OC” for a season while Bresnahan took over as “DC”…

Our “MGP” was still alive for most of this process….

“12”…NOTHING remains the same???

As it stands right now we have a rookie “HC” with “1” season’s experience as “DC” under a “D” minded “HC”….Never on his own before!!!…Never hired a staff before…I mean this is “Never-Never-Land” in all it’s glory!!!

Now if he retains some of what was making that top 10 “O” perform well than we have some continuity going forward….But will he???

Del Rio replaces Allen as Broncos' defensive coordinator
The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio to become their defensive coordinator, the team announced via Twitter on Friday.

NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora had reported Wednesday that Del Rio was a possible replacement for Dennis Allen, who became the Oakland Raiders’ head coach this week.

Del Rio is the Broncos’ fifth coordinator in five seasons. He also has a strong relationship with Broncos coach John Fox, having served as Fox’s defensive coordinator in 2002, when he was coach of the Carolina Panthers.

“We are thrilled to be able to add such a well-respected defensive coach to our staff,” Fox said. “He was an integral part of our turnaround on defense during my first year with the Panthers in 2002. His defenses with the Jaguars have ranked among the NFL’s best, and we are excited he’s a Bronco.”

Broncos safety Brian Dawkins also tweeted support for Del Rio.

“Love the hire, just hope we can keep him around,” Dawkins said.

Del Rio was fired by the Jaguars in November while in his ninth season with the team. He finished his career in Jacksonville with a 69-73 overall record, including a 1-2 mark in the playoffs.

Browns tab ex-Vikings coach Childress as offensive coordinator
The Cleveland Browns have hired former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress to become the team’s offensive coordinator, confirming an earlier report Friday by NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora.
2012 Senior Bowl
The Senior Bowl — one of the premier pre-draft events — features the best senior college stars and top NFL draft prospects. NFL Network has coverage of the event, including the game on Jan. 28

Childress is the first Browns offensive coordinator under head coach Pat Shurmur, who ran the offense himself during his first season as the team’s head coach. Shurmur acknowledged after the season the need to beef up his staff and find someone to help with game planning.

Shurmur has said he was open to the idea of having his offensive coordinator call plays if the right coach was hired. A source told The Plain Dealer that Shurmur will continue calling plays for now, but the decision is still being discussed and has not been finalized.

The Browns had interest in Childress and former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman, reported La Canfora, who were both in demand as offensive coordinators. Sherman agreed to terms to take the same position with the Dolphins on Friday.

Bowles is now available for the Raiders' DC

Allen needs to interview him; Miami just hired a man named Kevin Coyle as their new DC.

Allen as HC + Saunders as OC + Bowles as DC = excellent coaching staff

by rnpljnsn on Jan 28, 2012 1:26 AM PST reply actions

It'd be nice if Bowles got hired here

But I’m not going to count on it. Not sure a new HC is going to want to hire a guy who interviewed for his job just a couple weeks ago.

Only time will tell if the NFL vendetta...

Against AD will die with our beloved owner. Mark Davis and his horrible hair go and hide in Tahiti, and Reggie McKenzie played ball with the NFL executives, then and only then will the Raiders get the calls that the Patriots get. We’ll see. Go Raiders!!!

Looking forward...

…Gannon said blow it all up, and they did, but by necessity. If Al were still alive, Hue probably would have been retained until four or five games into the next season, thus, destroying another year. RIP Al, may your leadership, different as it was, be the foundation of the new staff. I hope they make you proud. I think it’s possible, but will be crazy. (Cheers, Panty… I just found this blog, any others you recommend?) This is my only persona (hahaa!)

The Names Being Thrown Around Are Not Very Exciting But I Do Find This Interesting...
" From Thoughts from the Dark Side:

UPDATE: Just hours after confirming Emmitt Thomas was “in the mix” for the Raiders DC position, Alex Marvez confirmed that Thomas is “OUT of the mix”. BUT, as things often go, another candidate has come to light. Another defensive coach who has ties with Dennis Allen is the Saints defensive line coach Bill Johnson. He now becomes the top candidate for the position although being “in the mix” is not confirmed the connection between the two is undeniable.
Bill Johnson and Dennis Allen have spent nearly their entire coaching careers together. They coached together at Texas A&M in the late nineties, then Johnson came to the Falcons in 2001 and Allen joined him the following season. They also coached together in New Orleans during Johnson’s first two seasons as the Saints defensive line coach.
Johnson has a long history of developing defensive line talent in his 11 years as an NFL coach.
In Johnson’s third fourth year as an NFL coach with the Falcons, Atlanta reached the NFC Championship Game with the defensive line leading the NFL in sacks (48) for the first time in franchise history. The Falcons also ranked eighth in the NFL in run defense, Patrick Kerney had a career-high 13 sacks and Rod Coleman led all defensive tackles with 11.5.
Coleman was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2005, and his 28 sacks from 2004-06 were the most by a defensive tackle in the NFL over that span. Kerney was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2004, and the defensive end had 53 sacks under Johnson’s tutelage from 2001-06, notching at least 10 sacks in three seasons.
During his tenure as defensive line coach with Atlanta from 2001-06, the team twice ranked in the top 10 in fewest yards allowed and fewest yards per carry (2004, 2006).
During his two seasons with the Broncos, he coached a unit that in 2007 tied for second in the NFL with nine takeaways, combining for seven fumble recoveries and two interceptions. That season, DE Elvis Dumervil tied for sixth in the league with 12.5 sacks.
The line thrived under Johnson in 2009. Defensive end Will Smith finished fifth in the NFL with a career-high 13 sacks. The defense finished second in the NFL in red zone touchdown percentage s(39.3). In 2010, the Saints defense improved from 25th in the NFL to 4th in yardage allowed."

Gary Crowton "OC" Of The Ducks??....Play Caller Perhaps???

I would like this if we keep Al Saunders as “OC” so we don’t have to alter the terminology and such…Maybe make a new position for him as “Assistant HC-O”….

Apparently, Todd Bowles is taking the DB coaching gig in Philly and turned down an offer from us

I’m not sure what position we offered him but I thought he might have been considered for the DC position. Regardless, I would have really liked to have had someone of his caliber on the staff.

You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who makes people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.

by Buster Bluth on Jan 30, 2012 7:49 AM PST reply actions

I agree I wanted him too for our DC however.....

If his ego couldnt handle working as DC in a place that he was interviewed for the HC job then fine, id rather him not on the staff. Also if he would rather be a DB coach in Philly then our DC then fuck’em as well. If its simply that he has more faith in a lower position in Philly then at a higher position here then we dont want him anyway and he was never really Raider material. However if we were just offering the DBs job or something similar than we are fools and i dont blame him for feeling insulted and going to Philly instead. If you interview for a manager job at the bank and they offer you the janitor job instead if you have other options you probably will not be accepting the janitor position lol

If he turned down the DC job it was out of his ego being hurt for being passed up for the HC job

If his ego is that fragile he doesnt need to be on our team anyway
