I have not had the best start to the New Year. I normally post after each game and this time I could not. It was not because I was too upset though. No it was because a computer Virus completely wiped out my hard drive. That happened within about 10 minutes after the clock struck 0 on our season. Great timing! I was already ranting about another season lost when some evil soul decided to give me something else to be angry about!
Going into this year I sincerely thought we would end up with 10 wins. I argued wholeheartedly many times that we would finish with a winning record this year and we had every opportunity to do that. We did not. Another season lost but this one had so many things dooming it that it was impressive just to still be alive week 17. I am not satisfied and I am not happy but I do understand this was just a year that had too much stacked against it. We did not lose this year because we sucked and that at least is a positive.
I really hate that we finished this season the way we did but there are so many great things to look at for the future. We are in a great position to succeed. We are in such a state of transition that everything is going to change and I can't help but feel excited and nervous. It all hinges on who we bring in, and hopefully who we send packing. Bresnahan needs to be gone, there is no excuse for the pathetic play of his defense and somebody needs to be held accountable. Since I do not want to go through another new Head Coach, it is Bresnahan that has to go.
The GM is the most interesting search and I really hope that we hire somebody as soon as possible. There are some really great options out there and I really hope we get the right one for us. My number one choice has been and still is Reggie Mckenzie from the Green Bay Packers front office. The man is a great talent evaluator and has worked with one of the most consistently successful franchises in all of sports. He is a great person for the community and a former Raider. Working closely with the likes of Ted Thompson is a definite plus.
There are other great options too. Bill Polian, as Taw brought up, is definitely my number 2 option. I don't think a couple of bad years is enough to discount a man with the reputation and record of success that he has had. His firing will leave him ready to prove that he has not lost it as many people claim. He is also a great person and has developed excellent connections across the entire NFL. He gets what he wants done, its whether what he wants is still what works that has the concern of some people.
Jerry Angelo and AJ Smith are two GMs that will have their names brought up as well. AJ Smith is not even gone from San Diego yet so he might not even be available. Even if he does leave it sounds more likely for him to go to St. Louis than here, and that is just fine with me. I do NOT want either of these people. They both have a history of refusing to pay top notch players and causing strife amongst their previous organizations.
The fact that Jerry Angelo, who was recently fired from the Bears, would not give Matt Forte a contract extension tells me I don't want him. Any body who has one of the best all around backs in the league and would rather make him disgruntled than reward the man for the player he is does not belong with the Silver and Black. I wouldn't mind having somebody that keeps the purse strings tighter than Mr. Davis did but refusing to extend the contract to one of the best players in the NFL is not the thing to chose to be stingy on.
We do not have many draft picks obviously. However, that I think makes the GM job more difficult. He is going to have more things to do to either A) get more draft picks or B) convince more free agents. We have too many holes to fill, and we need to get somebody that inspires confidence from available players around the league. I will not hide my head after this season and I am excited for next year. SILVER AND BLACK FOREVER!!
