What to look for at today's HC press conference

It's been pretty slow around here for news since we announced the acquisition of new head coach Dennis Allen to the Raider Nation. While we have discussed the new HC of the Raiders ad nauseam he is still the new head coach of this team and he's here to usher in a new era along with Reggie McKenzie in the story of the Oakland Raiders. Today will be the first time we will get to see the new HC and most of us don't really know a whole lot about the man. Here are some things to look for at today's press conference.

Star-divide

  • It will interesting to see if Davis is present again at the table. Al was always there to introduce the new coaches but with McKenzie in the fold it may be his role now to handle these types of events from now on. Mark may not be as comfortable in these situations but he carried himself very well when introducing Reggie.
  • Allen will be in the big chair for the first time in his career and being the youngest HC in the league, we will see how he carries himself in front of the media. I found Cable and Jackson were a little stiff and out of their comfort zone when they attended their first presser as HC of the Raiders and then learned how to deal with the media as time went on.
  • Will Allen disclose what his plans are for the OC and DC positions on the Raiders and will he retain anyone from the old regime? Many would like to see Saunders stay for continuity of the offense and allow Allen to concentrate on the defensive side of the ball which requires the most attention
  • Can Allen give us a sense that he can fix the penalty problems we have had over the past few years culminating to the disaster we suffered this season? All Jackson would ever say is "Believe me when I tell you we are working on it". Those types of responses only work for so long until they lose their meaning.
  • What kind of defense is Allen looking to install? He ran a 4-3 in Denver but has experience in 3-4 schemes as an assistant. Although we don't have the pieces for a 3-4, I hope we see some hybrid looks.
  • How does Allen feel about Palmer and whether or not he's the guy to take us to the next level?
  • How can help fix one of the worst run defenses going on 5 years or so now?
  • Is he going to call plays on defense or is he going to allow his DC to make those calls and concentrate on game planning and game management?
  • Hopefully he and Reggie can enlighten us on what their vision is for the Raiders starting in 2012 and how we are going to get there.

Also, I heard Bowles turned down an offer from the Raiders to be the DB coach in Philly

I’m curious as to what position he was offered. If it was to be the DB coach here then I guess I understand but if it was to be the DC then that saddens me as I thought he would be a good addition.

You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who makes people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.

I don't think it was for the DC position

Allen as the HC will really be working the defensive side of the ball anyway and he probably has in mind who he wants at DC and it’s probably someone he’s very familiar with already.

I would expect that unless that person is on the Giants or Patriots staff, then he may already be hired and it will be announced very soon.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

I doubt it was for the DC job too

I hope he has a DC and OC to name during the press conference so we can get those 2 things hanging over heads put to bed. A young inexperienced HC will need solid veteran coordinators in my opinion and no…that doesn’t mean Chuck E. Cheese.

I’m curious to see whether Allen will call the plays defensively though or let his DC perform that task. I prefer the HC concentrate on managing the game and let the coordinators make the play calls with the HC given the power of veto.

I'm Not Very Concerned About That "D" Which I Suspect Will Be Vastly Improved...

It’s the “O” 1st and the "ST"s 2nd that I’m most concerned about at this point…

A top 10 rated “O” is nothing to flip your nose up at so why would we sacrifice that now?…Running Al Sanders would make absolutely NO sense to me what so ever….Add in that “OL” coaching staff as well….How long has it been sense we had those 2 pluses in "OakTown?

The "ST"s was good…Not perfect but good so so I’m also hoping for continuity there…

Allen seems enthusiastic. I hope what he is saying comes to fruition soon. The Raiders have the type of athletes to play aggressively, fast, but maybe not intelligent. IT CAN BE FIXED THOUGH! I hope the hatin donkeys eat their words in the next few years.

Report: Nerves in Manning's arm not healing fast enough to play
Citing two sources with knowledge of Peyton Manning’s rehabilitation from neck surgery, Yahoo! Sports reported Monday night that the Colts quarterback has hit a plateau in his recovery and might not be able to play football again.

According to the story, the vertebrae in Manning’s neck have healed as expected and he’s been throwing a football since December, but the nerves in his arm aren’t progressing enough to indicate that he will play again, as shown by the velocity in his passes.

Things we know:

-Every player will be evaluated.
-He wants and aggressive, smart, tough football team.
-Coaching staff is still a work in progress.
-He wouldn’t commit to Al Saunders, and yeah it may be likely that he wants “his guy” running the O.
-He wants to preach discipline and consistency and won’t tolerate stupid penalties.
-Rolando McClain is on a short leash (confirmed by Reggie)
-He seems commited to Carson Palmer.
-On offense he wants to be explosive (like the Saints).
-On defense he wants to get after the QB and create turnovers (like the 09 Saints).

I'm liking this guy

I really think I would be upset if he put his staff together in less than a week or actually 4 days from his contract signing. We should start seeing things move forward now that the team has got the formalities out of the way.

He seams as though he likes Palmer, said he has spoke with him so that is good. He says he wants an explosive passing game. I see good things for the team.

I sure was happy to hear him say he is going to be the game manager and will not be calling the plays for the O or the D. Sweet stuff we are actually moving into the age of modern football.

From Corkran:
Allen said he is in the process of putting
together his staff. Offensive coordinator Al Saunders is under consideration, he said, as are the remaining coaches from Jackson’s staff.

McKenzie and Allen have spoken with quarterback Carson Palmer, with McKenzie meeting with Palmer face to face.

Both said they are excited about the prospect of Palmer being the starting quarterback next season.

“He’s excited, and we’re excited for him,” McKenzie said.

McKenzie said every player will be evaluated in the coming days, including the 20 players eligible to become free agents. That list includes Campbell.

Allen said he will be involved in every aspect of the team. However, he intends to let his coordinators handle the play-calling duties.

If Saunders is retained

I do not expect Jason Campbell to be back, after the, “Real quarterback” comment Al made when we acquired Carson.

Although I would hope Jason returns

you keep saying that Panty but i have to disagree, the only way we keep Saunders is if he is the playcaller

GREAT news on Carson from both Reggie (face-to-face!) and Allen!

I hope Al Saunders is retained for the sake of continuity as well as being a first class OC in his own right.

Al comes from the “Air Coryell” school with GREAT mentors.

I’d love to trade McFadden as we seem to have more than adequate RBs in Bush and TJ. Draft picks would be more helpful than an oft-injured RB.

by freeperjim on Jan 30, 2012 2:02 PM PST reply actions

Unless we can get a great deal for McFadden, I don't want him going anywhere

Yeah, this season was rough, but it was bad for a lot of players (injury-wise). I’d rather have a Darren McFadden for 12-13 regular season games than a gamble of a draft pick. I also haven’t seen enough of Jones to tell me how good he can be. And Bush clearly was getting worn down by the end of the season.

by Chris2814 on Jan 30, 2012 2:27 PM PST up reply actions

I would not be confident at all with a bush/jones backfield

Not until jones shows MUCH more.

I love bush as the #2 in a 1-2 punch. As the #1? Don’t like it. didn’t like it. wouldn’t like it.

Plus, if you're going to get on DMC for injuries

You’d have to tread Jones the same. How many games was he active for this season? I have high hopes for the kid, but this season I got to see practically nothing from him so I wouldn’t be willing to get rid of McFadden for a Bush/Jones combo right now.

You havent been around very long brother, Mcfadden is absolutely INCREDIBLE when healthy and has averaged 12-13 games per season before this past year

Think of McFadden as

Bo Jackson, he’s not there for the full season, but it’s OK because the impact he makes.
Hopefully he’ll avoid the injuries Bo got, and stick around for a long time. Worth it for 10 great games per year.
As for Coach Allen, is there anywhere to see the full press conference posted?

exactly. Everyones jumpin the gun on trading him. Yea it sucks he's frequently injured but when he does play he can single handily win us games. Now with palmer mcfadden doesnt have to be the focal point anymore.

with Campbell Mcfadden was the offense. In addition to that Mcfadden should now get more yardage per attempt than ever. Not only is our O line getting better but now defense’s cant stack the box waiting for him to run and forcing campbell to throw. Palmer has the ability to air it out and frequently does. If they keep stacking the box then Palmer going deep, they spread out, mcfadden tares off a huge run. Typically the dynamic duo is QB-WR, I see it next year as QB-RB.

by Dark Hole on Jan 30, 2012 3:15 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly! Do we really want to trade one of the most dynamic players in the league BEFORE we have seen him on the field with Carson Palmer?!

They played one half together and thats it, together they could be the best running back/Quarterback combination in the entire league. It doesnt make sense to trade him before we see how they can play together

And although McFadden is/was a great runner, he is nowhere near what Bo was. Bo was a BEAST. Its always fun to watch his highlights….dammn shame his career was short lived.

PFT is reporting that Dennis Allen is commited to Carson Palmer as his starter in 2012

“New Raiders head coach Dennis Allen told Mike Florio and Russ Thaler on NBC Sportstalk that Palmer "absolutely" will be the Raiders’ starter in Week One of the 2012 season.”

by Raider Roy on Jan 30, 2012 4:17 PM PST reply actions

If RB Bush walks....

We should have either Marshawn Lynch or Peyto Hillis on speed dial. No way should we drop McFragile. Even if we only get 6 good games out of the guy, thats still 6 good games.

by LaRaider on Jan 30, 2012 4:30 PM PST reply actions

Agreed, Lynch would be AMAZING

Imagine those 2 splitting carries, 10 each, and Taiwan getting 5 or 6 per game, 3 headed monster. Plus, now we have Palmer with a full offseason, and a healthy DHB, Moore, Ford. <—- BEAST offense, I do not fear calling that offense top 5 with NE, GB, NO, DET. What I fear is the D, but I trust Allen to turn it around. (btw the O should keep Saunders to really be considered top 5, they would not set bakc TOO much, but they would set back a little if we lost him)

by Chris2814 on Jan 30, 2012 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

look at his 2010

I don’t think hes that good but he isn’t the bust from last year either. I am assuming he comes relatively cheap. If bush walks he absolutely has to be replaced by a big back. (reece could also fill this bill imo, depending on who the oc is… Reece was criminally under used by baby huey)

by lchristmas on Jan 30, 2012 9:03 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

I just see Hillis as a one year wonder

but I’m sure he could be decent in an offense like ours, with more explosive playmakers. I’ll admit that Cleveland isn’t exactly a great place to thrive. Totally agree that Reece was horribly under utilized last season.

Like I said, I’d be alright if Hillis came to us cheap. But I really didn’t like him sitting out due to strep throat and all that jazz this season. Granted, I don’t know how sick he actually was, but he certainly didn’t come off very well over the course of this season.

Nnamdi didn't miss that many games due to injury

He wouldn’t have been the most coveted free agent on the market this year if he were as fragile as you’re making him out to be. The reason Al didn’t go after Nnamdi this time around is probably because Al priced himself out of the whole thing with the huge contract he gave the guy last time. Then Philly gets him for what we’re paying Routt. It was a bad move as far as I’m concerned, but let’s not suddenly pretend that Nnamdi wasn’t great (or never played) when he was with us.

by Chris2814 on Jan 30, 2012 6:59 PM PST up reply actions   2 recs

i am not saying he wasnt a great coner back. All I go by are the memories of every game Ive watched/listened to. And there were quite a few games where his ankle had just enough issues...

To where he would consider himself done for that game…enough to where his contributions were irrelevent to those games. GRANTED, he had plenty of productive games, more than DMac on a per season basis. But his ankle was an issue every year. That memory sticks out. Al franchised him so many times, and I would have guaranteed had he not had any injuries his last year or two, Al would have done more to try and keep him. OTHERWISE, this issue wouldnt be debated.

by autumn_fart on Jan 30, 2012 7:09 PM PST up reply actions

I do not remember ever considering Nnamdi as injury prone, even the slightest bit

His not being resigned was only about money and age, it had nothing to do with a past history of injuries that only you remember him having. He was not injury prone at all and previous injuries had nothing to do with him not being resigned. Maybe Al thought he was going to start being injured but the stats do not lie, look them up anywhere. He played all the damn time injured or not man, he was in no way injury prone

They never threw to him. Doesn’t matter, if Dmac gets hurt again early in the season, its our loss. I was at the game when Bo got hurt. Very similar running style; aggressive. Some guys are just injury prone as welp, and theres nothing you can do about that.

Hmmm

Knapp’s only saving grace to me is that he was coaching this team when Jabustus was here. That in itself must have been horribly painful. This time he has a real QB to work with. I hope he has watched this team, because this offense has potential. DMC was in a perfect system to allow him to excel. I hope he doesn’t change that aspect of the offense. Everyone else can adjust accordingly. Complete change of the system. Don’t like it much but I’ll give it a chance. Damn Raiders, always unpredictable.

Knapp is a very poor choice for this football team at this time

I don’t see fast, up-tempo, aggressive offense when I think of Knapp. He is more of a run up the gut repeatedly type of guy to try and wear teams down. We didn’t do a very good job of that most times last year. Knapp is a very predictable play caller which is why Cable stripped him of the play calling duties…that and to save his job.

I’m not very happy with this move AT ALL. Plus losing Fassel was not a good move either. If Allen said he wanted to retain some assistants…he’s picking the wrong ones. You are off to a very bad start coach Allen. We needed a very strong hand on the offensive wheel and you choose someone who will run this offense at a very average level.

He was just the QB coach there...

I admire his ability to help prepare Yates to keep their ship afloat but as an OC, Knapp is a below mediocre talent and will not move this team into the direction Allen promised yesterday. This is supposed to be a new era…not a re-tread era.

Knapp?!! That's the best you could do coach Allen?

I can understand not keeping Saunders but to ditch him for Knapp?? Really? Are you just hiring friends Coach Allen? I was very optimistic about hiring Dennins Allen but this move I’m not too happy with. Might have to say goodbye to that top 10 offense we had..

by TRIPPLE OT on Jan 31, 2012 5:47 AM PST reply actions

I hate being overly pessimistic but this move has rookie HC written all over it

He’s bringing in someone he’s comfortable with and someone that will serve as a “yes” man rather than someone who might challenge him in a good way. Knapp has not proven to be a successful OC in his last 4-5 years as an OC. Why not bring in an up and coming guy or just keep Saunders? Why dip back into the past to find someone who strives for competence. Everyone hated our vanilla defense in the past…well we are about to see some vanilla offense next season.

It just doesn't make sense with what Allen said at the press conference

Knapp is the exact opposite of aggressive, up-tempo, and fast. He is slow, prodding, and predictable. He will make us the easiest team to game plan for defensively around the league. We will have to win on talent alone without any help from good and creative play calling.

Cornwell takes issue with NFLPA leader Smith in 11-page letter...Just When We Thought That "CBA" Crap Was Over???
INDIANAPOLIS — David Cornwell has sent an 11-page letter to all fellow agents, detailing flaws in DeMaurice Smith’s candidacy for NFL Players Association executive leadership.

Smith’s contract is up in March, and Cornwell, a longtime attorney and agent who opposed Smith for the NFLPA executive director job after Gene Upshaw’s 2008 death, has sent a memo around the league making a case against renewing Smith’s contract.

“Despite my greatest hopes, my personal experience reveals that (Smith’s) vision in 2008 was little more than an inside Washington political campaign — high on style, low on substance,” Cornwell wrote in the memo, a copy of which was obtained. “(His) grandiose pronouncements did not translate into meaningful progress in the business of playing football. Rather than advancing the partnership between players and team owners, the new 10 year CBA relegated NFL players’ status to mere employees.”

I have no doubt that Coach Allen wants to succeed as a HC and he saw something he liked in Knapp when they were both working in the Falcons staff, only time will tell if these are all good moves or not.
