Now that its a few days after the game and my feelings have cooled down I want to point out a few things I've noticed while sitting at work and being able to watch every game this season on television.
1. Carson Palmer has to step up if we are to have any success. CP3 has nearly killed one of his receivers (DHB) and now basically cost us the game vs ATL by being a split second slow pulling the trigger, he has to start letting the ball go or else he will face the same problems. On the same note Carson has to become more accurate, he is missing throws consistently leading to drives being shortened. Knapp gets the blame for the calls sometimes, but Carson does miss passes when receivers are open. Knapp puts Carson in a good position on a regular basis he just needs to tie a few things up with his timing and accuracy.
2. Darren McFadden needs to run like he wants to get paid. Instead of stepping around the hole, Run DMC needs to run hard and up field. A man with as much talent as DMC should never average 3 yards per carry. Also if it isn't working with DMC out of the backfield, call screens or passes out of the backfield and allow those calls to replace the normal 1st down run calls.
3. Cut the quitter plays. As a team we aren't good enough to give away drives. My biggest problem with Knapp is his inability to find a play call in a crunch. Cut the bubble screens and implement more downfield passing on normal passing downs. When its third and eleven call something that actually can get 11 yards. Calling routes that are 5 yard outs on third downs are what I would consider quitter calls, as your quitting on the drive and settling on a punt.
4. Quit playing cover NONE. This is the NFL and players are getting paid. Play press coverage on third and three and stop giving up short routes. Brian Hartline made the all pro team almost with seven yard routes vs the raiders. Man up every once in a while or at least have the corners press to cut down on receivers freely getting off the ball. I understand the corners may not be good at that, but at some point just giving up yards and hoping to stop them in the redzone doesn't work. Also, the corners can only improve through repetition.
On the positive, Dennis Allen is looking better every week. He has wasted no challenges of yet and he is looking more like a coach. Its early to pass judgement, but I think he is looking up. Wish he would spice things up every once in a while with a fake on specials teams or an scheme addition maybe implemented during the week to help the corners and his d.c. Miles Burris has looked good, and our receivers collectively have looked good. Brandon Myers has a future with the silver and black for sure. The next few games we got the jags, chiefs, bucs lets hope the Raiders can turn it around and get on a win streak.
