Palmer suffered the injuries during the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. He took a shot from Panthers defensive end Greg Hard and was forced to leave the game. Initial X-rays came back negative, but a CT scan revealed the damage. With Palmer out, Matt Leinart will start against San Diego while second-year quarterbackTerrelle Pryor will also be worked into the game in certain situations.
Palmer started all 15 games for the Raiders this season, throwing for 4,018 yards and 22 touchdowns. While he is still under contract for next season, his future with the team could come into question. Palmer is set to earn a base salary of $13 million next season, but the Raiders could decide that is too much money and either release him or attempt to renegotiate his contract again.
Sunday's game will be just the third game Leinart has started since 2007.
