When Carson Palmer went down in the first quarter against the Panthers I expected to see a lot of Terrelle Pryor. Dennis Allen had already said the plan going into the game was to get Pryor more action so when Carson was knocked out of the game I expected to see way more Terrelle Pryor than Matt Leinart. Dennis Allen said in the post game press conference that Pryor isn't ready to run the Raiders offense. From what I saw on Sunday Matt Leinart isn't ready to run the offense either.
We all know what Matt Leinart has to offer. He hit his ceiling in college. He hasn't progressed at all during his career in the NFL. He is a decent back up quarterback and that's it. Terrelle Pryor on the other hand has the physical tools to by a big time play making quarterback. Getting him live action will only make this kid better. When both Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart were injured in the preseason and Terrelle Pryor got all the first team snaps at practice he had his best performance.
In that game he broke numerous tackles that most quarterbacks would have been brought down for a sack. He broke a 60+ yard run that set up his own 17 yard touchdown run. He also connected with Juron Criner on a perfectly executed play action roll out pass for a long touchdown. He finished the day completing three out of five passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for another 90 yards and a touchdown on five attempts.
The Raiders have nothing to lose if they start Pryor. It's not like the playoffs are on the line this week. They would lose a golden opportunity to give the potential QB of the future a valuable start. He needs more reps in a live game. He already flashed in the preseason after getting all the reps in practice.
Dennis Allen needs to commit to Pryor this week. They should give him all the reps and design a game plan around his strengths. I think he can make some plays against the Chargers suspect defense. Even though 2012 was a disappointment for the Raiders and us fans beating the Chargers with Terrelle Pryor leading the way would be a nice way to go into the off season.
