Oakland Raiders Free Agency: Strong Safety, Tyvon Branch

For those of us who were fortunate enough to be around in Tyvon's rookie season, you will remember that he was an active member of Silver and Black Pride.

Here is a sample from his sophomore season: Talkin' With Tyvon

Now, the young safety that many of us have believed to be Pro-Bowl ready will be entering free agency.

This past season, Tyvon really came into his own with 109 tackles, the NFL Leader for a Strong Safety. he also had five passes defensed, a pick and a fumble recovery.

In my mind he is in the Top 5 safety free agents and the number one strong safety in Free Agency.

I think that losing him would be a bigger loss than losing Michael Bush or any of the other free agents from the 2011 Oakland Raider roster.

If you were Reggie McKenzie would you try and extend him for 4-5 years, franchise him or let him walk and go after someone else.

Personally, I would love to see him matched up with Dashon Goldson or LaRon Landry in 2012!

Sorry but he is totally overrated. Was not around the ball enough on all those passes opposing QB’s made against us this past season. Troy P of the Steelers and Ed Reed are game changers and if he was half as good as them maybe he would have won at least 1 game for us.

are you

sure you are watching raiders football? the kid was all over that dam field thats like saying rolando mcclain is making solid tackles and MLB. Branch is our #1 focus he should be resigned for long term, and considered a leader on this team. He plays with great intensity and is not afraid to get up in your face when you make a mistake, ask Huff and Girodiano (sorry for the incorrect spelling)

My eye test tells me the same thing, I just don’t see as the leader of any team espicially a team that needs to be hard hitting.

explain then, mr 2020,

then explain one, just one, great play Branch made this year? Other than the fumble return against the Chargers last year I haven’t seen a great play from Tyvon for the last three years, and I’ve been going to every game.
The reason why he’s flying around the field is because he has no instincts and can’t do anything other than follow a man around the field.
He can’t hit, can’t force fumbles, isn’t stout against the run.
Sure he makes tackles, but isn’t that what he’s supposed to do? That doesn’t make him great.
The Raiders need a safety that makes plays, hard hits, interceptions, forced fumbles, and sacks. Otherwise he can be easily replaced.

I’m surprised how everyone loves this guy. Tyvon’s number one fan was Breshnahan. That tells you something right there.

Bresnahan loving him means even somebody as idiotic as Panda could see how good Branch was.

No need to point out individual plays to somebody who obviously has no interest in hearing good things about Branch. He made many good plays, maybe your seats werent good enough to see the whole game. He was making hits and around the ball. Also being the leading tackler is more than just making tackles like he is suppose to do, its making more tackles than any other player on the team. Every player is suppose to make tackles, yet he was the only one that made them consistently.

Overated?

He has been the only consistent performer on a sorry team. Plaus he is relatively young. He is the most polished tackler on the team, that isnt saying much, but atleast its something. Maybe, Allen can work with him and Branch will be better than ever next season. He actually seems to be more of a SS than a FS.

Focused on Wrong Player

You see Archangel, the safety that is primarily responsible for pass coverage is the “free safety.” Ed Reed is a free safety. Maybe the problem was Matt Giordano or the injury to Michael Huff.

he did win one game for us, Houston

He was the missile coming at Schaub that made him puss out and try to throw the ball instead of run in the winning touchdown, so he did win your at least 1 game that you mention.

fuck that

It does not matter if it was a poor choice or an immobile Quarterback, if Branch doesnt see him start to run and make that play we lose the game. The rest doesnt matter, it was a great play.. Should Shaub have ran it anyway and probably scored even if he is slow, absolutely, but did he change his mind and thus lose the game because Branch was coming at him yes. Then its a great play that won a game, especially with only 10 people on the field.

I agree with ya!

Branch is highly overrated!! He can play the run fairly well (at times) but other times he gets caught out of position badly and looks like a moron out there (trying to catch up), which granted he isn’t the only one doing it but considering where he plays on the field, we can’t afford to have him out there blowing plays all that often! As for his coverage skills, they are lacking tremendously, getting caught out of position MUCH more frequently, and any fan who thinks differently are simply fooling themselves! He in NO way deserves top five money at his position and has barely earned the money of a top ten safety!! Reggie is showing just how smart he truly is, and he’s watched the tapes and knows the Raiders will never pay Branch the money he feels he has earned, when the footage shows otherwise. Maybe if Allen and his coaches can get him to play WAY more consistently in coverage AND also a bit better in stopping the run, then he can get a long term deal but at a more reasonable price!! There are way more consistent safeties in the NFL to go after than Branch, if he won’t take a reasonable offer!!

by Diablo24 on May 7, 2012 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions

i voted franchise him

because it is less expensive to franchise a safety than a rb. While we franchise him also work out a long term deal to keep him an extra 5 years so we dont have the same issue next year. Tyvon deserves to be a Raider and to be paid

That's assuming we can work a deal out for Bush

More than likely Bush is looking for a significant pay increase and possibly to be a starter in this league. If that’s the case then we not be able to retain in any other way but to franchise tag him. I like Bush a lot but it would be a hard hit on the cap to invest that kind of money in one position even though we are obviously going to be more of a running team than we were even last year under Knapp.

You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who makes people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.

by Buster Bluth on Feb 15, 2012 4:54 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly

That is absolutely right about Bush. I think it will actually have more to do with starting than money. Bush is of the caliber that he could be a starter on almost any other NFL team. Despite Reggie McKenzie’s call for open competition in camp, the reality is McFadden is the starter. And should be. Bush knows that. He won’t be the starter as long as McFadden is around. Franchising is probably the only way he stays. And I thionk he will be. Question is will he be disgruntled.

by RaiderJoe on Feb 16, 2012 6:09 AM PST up reply actions

If we franchise Bush...he will be making more than McFadden I believe

How can anyone justify that? That’s why I believe Bush will not be retained. There are cheaper versions of what Bush brings to the table in free agency. Granted, they aren’t as good as Bush but they would come much cheaper in my opinion. The Packers haven’r spent big on RBs since Ahmad Green I believe…I can’t see McKenzie putting that kind of money into a backup unless McFadden is traded.

It's a concern

But on the other hand GB has consistently, over the last 15 years, had a great QB and receiving corp. They were built around their QBs. Hopefully McKenzie realizes the Raiders aren’t built like the Packers and thus priorities must be different right now.

by Chris2814 on Feb 16, 2012 3:51 PM PST up reply actions

fair concern, given it's the way the majority of league GMs are moving

it’s almost like it’s a concerted effort on the parts of GMs to battle agents and greater dictate price tags for positions. The last couple decades have seen premiums on certain positions fluctuate tremendously. While it may or may not be completely true, especially when you’re talking about rare and special talents, the league is moving towards the notion that it’s easy to replace backs and still have mostly the same success in whatever you’re trying to do provided you do the rest right.

I’m not sure I’m in total agreement with it, especially since running backs put themselves in harm’s way as a definition of their position, and the great ones are able to do it without sustaining injuries that cost them too much time or ability to start. I hope we do what we have to to lock up both of our backs, because I think they’re special in ways that we’ll lose out if we try to replace, at least in the short term, and I’m not down for that either.

Tackles

He always lead the Raider in tackles because the D line and LBs are not doing their job. He could probably be a better run stuffer if the RB was not running full speed through the line.

I know most like him, but have no idea if he is in the plan for the new D. I voted to extend him.

by Mallard Davis on Feb 14, 2012 11:44 AM PST reply actions

Is Connor a FA or do you mean trade? I wouldn’t mind that actually.

by Ray69gto on Feb 14, 2012 4:51 PM PST up reply actions

Connor is a free agent from Carolina who is a backup forced to play because of Jon Beason's numerous injuries.

A lunch-pail workman-type LB improves our LB corp whether he’s a starter or providing depth & leadership. Good call camacho. I voted tag Branch. Let Bush walk and while Dashon Goldston is a long-shot, Laron Landry at free is very possible given his injury history. He may come cheap.

Do Your Job

I know football is all about “do your job”. I think so many players especially on the D are not doing their job so how can you evaluate anyone unless you look at the film.

Give Him a 3 yr deal

He is a excellent safety and will shine under our new coaching staffs scheme(btw i really like our staff) and you may say “you don’t even know the defensive scheme of the team yet” and thats true but i also know for these last yrs our defense has been the most vanilla defense in the nfl.the most predictable.and in this day and age a bit unconventional because of the evolution of the nfl into a speed/passing league as well as the many rules changes and installations…R.I.P Al Davis however with the changing of the guard we will naturally become more modernized/standard in scheme defensively.A player like Tyvon Branch will greatly benefit from this because of his football instincts playing style and he’s effort has never been questioned not to mention hes a excellent athlete.hes a good raider get em some teammates on the d and he may become a great 1.we need some draft picks though.atleast a 2nd or 3rd rounder

OAKLAND D OVERALL LAST SEASON = AWFUL

It’s hard to evaluate players for the things that they didn’t do without having full field game film to study, and studying it. I won’t even pretend to know how Branch did – tackles are a poor measure of success if not measured against opportunities to get tackles; a run minded SS with a poor performing front 7 is almost guaranteed to lead a team in tackles. What I CAN say with confidence is that Oakland’s D stunk on ice last season with players that should be playing at a higher level by now. No arguing it. Penalties up the wazoo and a complete inability to stop anyone’s short to mid range passing attack in the second half of the season. Branch did not seem to be one of those habitually penalized at the most inopportune times, but I can’t confirm, that was just my impression. The upshot of what I’m saying is that I would allow the defensive coordinator to make any roster moves he wants – NO ONE on the Raiders D has earned the right to stick around.

by P. Rathbun III on Feb 14, 2012 2:15 PM PST reply actions

He's one of the bright spots on D, no way Reggie lets him walk

IMO he’s one of those players you build your team around, versatile, fast, instinctive, hard tacker, what else do you want?

No way he hits the open market…no way

by Raider Roy on Feb 14, 2012 2:46 PM PST reply actions

I'm of a diffrent mindset on Branch...

A. I don’t want to loose Branch.
B. You can’t sign Branch and keep Huff that too much money wrapped in 2 players at the safety spots.
C. I still think Branch needs to play Free Safety just a better fit with his speed and decent ball skills he and Gio could be a good tandem at FS.
D. Sadly if he stays at SS he may be to expensive for the net return.
E.Yes he led the team in tackles, doesn’t that mean the LB’s were god awful? Morison used to lead us in tackles before Blowlando McLaime.

With as bad as the D was I think it was easy for Branch to standout when his competition was Jerome Boyd and an injured Mike Mitchell. I would consider franchising him and try to figure it out maybe a restructure before the deadline and maybe a 3 year deal.

Mitchell has been inconstant, but when healthy he does a great job at covering TE.

Mitchell vs Jermaichael Finely… Mitchell is the only player this year that shut out Finely
MM 4 tackles 0 0.0 0.0 0 0 1 pass defended 1 Int 0 0

Likes some others have stated, he was the star on Defense this year. Yeah Gio had his moments, but the season as a whole…no one played better than Branch. He was all over the field and could not do it all by himself. His work ethic alone speaks for itself. He HAS to be retained, period! Remember…the rumors about Huff switching to CB, so we will see how things pan out. I do like Mitchell but he seems a little too inconsistent to be the #1. If the rest of the defense can learn how to do their jobs, then Branch will shine like no other this year…if we keep him that is.

Do what it takes to lock him up. For those criticizing his play need to look at how we're constantly failing to coordinate the defense to put guys in position

he tackles well, covers TEs brilliantly, and generally when it’s his job to cover wideouts he wins the battles. I can’t wait to see what some solid coaching will do to get some of our guys making plays where we’ve failed by not getting consistent synchronicity between the pass rush and secondary and an all-out failure by the front seven to consistently stuff the run. We did pretty good on the defensive line, but all too often lost the battle at the point of attack and the line of scrimmage overall late in the game against the run. If we can get better up there, which I fully expect from Tarver and Allen, it will be fun to watch our safeties getting more involved.

I’d say lock him up for three or four years, and save the tag for now. Dunno what Reggie will do, but can’t wait to find out. I think Tyvon is one of the safest guys in our secondary, but I’d say Chekwa and DVD are also very safe as well. I’d love to see Gio back too, but it’s hard to say where Mac will see him fitting in.

Surely we cannot be blinded by Tyvon’s play last season. He missed a lot of plays and he is always out of position on a lot of passing and run plays. He is at best a nickel or dime back. I say let us sign him for one more season and watch. We need better corners and safety’s as well as DL and LB. LB that can rush the passer and defend against the run. A real pass rusher like Von MIller of Denver who can also defend the run.

Keep him a raider! I watched every game and I personally never seen the guy give up on a play. Wish I could say the same about the front four and linebackers

Don't know

The dude can play safety fairly well. He isn’t an elite safety by any measure though. My problem with him isn’t necessarily his fault. The schemes haven’t really been suited to maximize what he can do, so I don’t think we’ve seen him reach his potential yet. On the other hand, our teams have generally been pretty terrible. Our defense was only ranked high a few times because teams didn’t have to throw on us (thank you to all of our magnificent QB’s ending with Jawalrus). I like him. He’s been here for a while, makes tackles, but he is no game changer. I would like to keep him and see what he can do under a defensive minded coach. He is consistently average or just above average, and I like that if we can’t get a solid replacement for him.

Thinking to franchise tag Branch is the only solution.

Offer Bush a reasonable salary but nothing near the $6.67 mill we are paying DMAC this season and if he accepts good. If not then let him walk & find a cheap replacement. Also the tag prevents Branch from testing free agency and if someone wants him bad enough than we can get compensation for him. Also we get a full season under a real NFL defensive scheme that is supposed to feature a solid SS to measure whether or not he is worth being committed to for the long haul.

I love Bush but I don't know if Bush is worth.

Is he worth 4-5 mil? What would you be able to get in a FA at that price?

I still think the smartest franchise tag may actually be for Reece since FB salary slots are so low and then we wouldn’t get priced out of that race…

Read an article about possible interest in a Colgate university back

a bruiser, though in the Patriot league, he avgs. 5.4 yards a carry and has 53 touchdowns and almost 5000 yards in about 3.5 seasons.

Remember the name: Nate Eachus. If he bests his 4.53 times at his pro day, he’ll turn some heads, and looks to be available in the middle rounds where we’ll have our only picks.

Well put

Branch’s main job was covering up the mistakes made by the DBs and I think he did a damn good job at that overall. Routt wouldn’t be getting this kind of attention from teams if Branch hadn’t covered up a good chunk of Routt’s mistakes. It’s easy to blame Branch when Routt got burned and he threw his hands up in the air if Branch should have been there…maybe, just maybe, Routt should’ve known he was on his own and may, just maybe, he couldn’t handle one on one coverage as good as people say he can. Plus, he’s one of the best tacklers on this team and is great at stopping the run when asked to play in the box.

You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who makes people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.

BW: I like where you are going with this, sir. New York tight ends Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum are expected to miss part of the 2012 season after being hurt in the Super Bowl. Boss is a former Giants’ tight end who the team wanted back. The Raiders could use draft picks and perhaps a trade would help both teams. Boss would likely command a conditional mid-round pick. I could see the fit here. Nice idea." My bad on the “some fan part”.

I would take the $2 mill off the books for this year and take the draft pick instead.

That would help get us under the cap and no penalties due this year. Also we can get his replacement either with a pick for a 1/4 of the price or somebody cheaper that fits the new offensive system and knows the OC. Joel Dreesen is just as good a receiving TE option and with the Texans running the ball better than anyone in the league last year that alone proves his value as a blocker. Also he’s much more durable than Owen Daniels hence why he had to start alot over the past few years or Kevin Boss as proven in his year in Oakland.

Obvious

I think they have to re-sign Branch. He is a vert good safety. With Routt being cut , we already need 2 CBs. We’ll see what Reggie decides about Huff and his salary, may lose him too if he won’t restructure. So there is turmoil enough in the raider secondary, Branch gives it some stability.

you come to such conclusions. We know better. Excited for what this season could bring. Hell, I get excited with every new coordinator because I’ve known we have more speed and talent than other more successful defenses. Cincy is one example that played pretty lights out D this year, and I think if you look at personnel, ours is much better—well, capable of being much better I should say. I think this staff will finally make some guys shine, and Branch promises to be the benefactor mostly I think.

He isn’t the best, but I think he will only get better with age. He might be playing just a little too punchy, his lines aren’t the best. (still remember that titans game when he hit the hole too hard, and missed the big tackle on johnson). Again though I think he is only going to get better with age.

Trevor Scott

He’s never been the same since he got hurt like 2 years ago. He’s lost a step or two at this point and I think being an afterthought on defense now has his confidence low. I’d be fine with letting him walk and getting someone new, cheap, and hungry.

I actually really like Moss as a spark plug off the bench and a situational rotation guy and he came at a fairly cheap price. As long as it stays that way I’d like to see him back but he’s the kind of guy that can be replaced.

I’m never a fan of keeping guys for their STs covering abilities unless they are a great gunner or can contribute in other areas as well. Groves won’t stay just o play STs and Blackstock was a Bresnahan pick and he’s replaceable.

Is he any good? In 2009 he was. But he was terrible in 2010, the last time he was a starter.

He didn’t play many snaps this year but when he did his man looked covered. But you can’t take anything from that since it’s such a small sample size. He’s not a good tackler. If you want someone to shutdown Larry Fitzgerald, he’s your guy. But that’s pretty much it.

It's too bad we didn't end up with Gaither last year

I was so stoked when I read we were signing him until he failed the physical. He looked really good once he took over the LT spot with the dolts last season. Him and Veldheer would be a sick bookend combo. I think the Chargers are going to work hard to keep him now.

Lots of good guards available this year too. Hopefully we give the boot to Carlisle and get a good replacement for him. Carlisle isn’t the worst but he’s getting old and I think his salary is a bit over $3M next year which is a bit much.

You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who makes people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.

I like Branch a lot

he’s needs someone who is good in coverage to play next to him though. Dashon Goldson’s weakness is defending the pass. I’d like to see the Raiders get DeCoud (a free agent) because he’s pretty good in pass coverage and probably wouldn’t cost that much.

i say concentrate on branch and let bush walk. we cant franchise bush and if he wants big money, let him move on. yea he filled in nicely for dmac intil the last month of the season when we needed him most.

Being a Cincy fan, haven't personally watched Branch play much. With his tackle total, am assuming he's more of a run-stopper vs. coverage guy?

From what I've read he sounds pretty tough. You guys have a couple good safeties, I'm sure your looking to lock up Branch early.
