Forget Bush; Raiders signed Lanyae Miller
Lanyae Miller is from Fresno State. He was a College backup running back on a talented Fresno State squad. He ran a 4.43 in the forty and weighs in at 232lbs. Holy moly, Batman!
Miller is known for long runs and power and speed when backed up against the goal line. He's faster than Bush and also a younger man than Bush. He will come cheaper too. Miller is a shrewd pickup that hasn't gotten a lot of attention. But it seems that McKenzie is using his magic to load the team with depth. There is no reason why the Raiders can't provide depth behind their superstar lottery picks.
Recently, Lanyae Miller learned blocking assignments during Cowboys camp as reported by ESPN.com.
Lanyae Miller along with the other free agents the Raiders signed this offseason are a start of something great. They recently signed several defensive lineman, a nose tackle, defensive backs, and a quality backup quarterback round. Look them up.
Missing from the list are linebackers. Because the Raider are going from a 4-3 to a 3-4, in terms of roster turnover, the Raiders, or any team with a 4-3 roster, have too many lineman and too few linebackers. The Raiders already picked up a few defensive lineman, so they are increasing the likelihood that they will target quality linebackers in the draft. Just my feeling for now. Things may change of course as we get closer to the draft. Free agents will be available and so on. Go Raiders!
There is so much to say so little time.

I like Miller
Watched him play over here in Fresno. He’s a decent back, nothing special but he plays hard every down. Good workman like ethic. He backed up Ryan Matthews for a time over here. He’s been around some decent football. Good pick up in terms of depth. No replacement for Bush though, Bush is still a better back.

Bush is a beast no doubt
His caliber may have dropped. He hasn’t had any of those long runs he used to get.
thats mostly due to other teams stacking the box when DMC went down
and Boller was in and Carson was still adjusting. Teams knew they were going to run and stacked it. By the time CP was getting his groove back Bush was worn down. Bush is a good second back but i dont think he can handle a full workload
I a have been looking at his measurables as well.
Another versitile back that can man the FB position also looking at Rashawn Jackson I say tag Branch and let him play for a big contract while we groom a replacement if he walks and let our under the radar players hungryc for their shot at relevance rather than a pay check provide us a little spark while we rebuild with youth like our relatively young coaching staff. Please do not pay Bush big bucks. I know he thinks he is a feature back and some might, but to me this season proved other wise. He is a good situational back who can help in pass catching, but not pass blocking. I’m sorry but that game where he could not punch it home on the one three times cancelled his franchise tag.
I've been critical of Branch
but it seems I may have overlooked him. What if he is great is a 3-4.
What has Fresno State ever contributed to our cause?

a back up at college will not translate into a Bush replacement
this guy may be trying out for the spot, and may get it for financial reasons…. But lets get serious. If he is that good, he would have started, not rode the pine in a college that is lower on the division I totem pole than most california schools
Exactly
Also, where is the certainty that we’re going to 3-4? I haven’t heard Allen say anything about going to a 3-4, he just said we’d use multiple formations.
@WorldBLee
mulitple formations means 3-4
lol jk. Everyone is quick to assume but if I were to give my two cents I say they stay a 4-3 but use a lot of 3-4 looks. Like Ravens hybrid
they just need to add one more lb in FA or late in the draft
and they will have enough linebackers for multiple. Plus they can bring branch ior mitchell in to line up as a lb then drop back in coverage or blitz
Huh?
How many Safeties play linebacker in the NFL?
They don't play LB.......
They do go up in the box though.

Alot of people have forgotten
Bush was one of the top Heisman candidates his last year a Louisville and then broke his leg like the first week of the season. The guy was never a backup we stole him in the 4th round and let him heal up….

He was a back up to McFadden.

Well then you know that backups in college have turned into nfl starters before.

I think Arian Foster was a backup in college. He did go undrafted.
There is Felix Jones, and someone mentioned Barry Sanders as a backup in college (although I don’t think he is).
In any case, to make a judgment because “he was a backup in college” is foolish. Yes, we shouldn’t expect him to be just as good as Bush, but we CAN expect him to contribute. He will most likely be the 2nd punch to McFadden’s 1st, and he has the size and apparently some speed, to do something in this offense. We’ll see what happens. I’m willing to give him a fair chance. He could be better than Bush, just as much as he could be worse than Bush. We don’t know until we see him on the field.
But if Bush leaves, I like that we got a big RB to fill in the void. For cheap too.

Sometimes sarcasim is a lost art... I'm aware of all of those references
Matt Cassell didn’t even take a snap at USC or NE and he’s a starter. there will always be anomalies when the human factor thus why it can never be an exact science just a giant guessing game…

Oh heck no. I have been here since 2009 I want to say (I used another username back then).
You forget Matt Cassel DID actually start for a FULL SEASON in New England (with a few snaps in the regular season before that when the pats have a considerable lead) in the 2008 season.
Also use the
sarcasm font
You use the @ symbol at both sides of your phrase. Its pretty difficult to detect sarcasm with text if you didn’t know.
Also, I understand the idea of the guessing game. But to guess how a player will do based on him only being a backup in college is foolish. Here is what we know: He has great size, and apparently speed for his size which is a plus. That’s really it. I will say that for those who are saying that this guy will replace Bush EFFECTIVELY, needs to be more patient. We truly don’t know how he will do, but if Bush leaves, and he becomes our #2 guy, then that means the coaching staff has enough confidence in him, with his size and speed he COULD be a worthy replacement.
But we don’t know. But we shouldn’t base our assumptions just on him being a backup.

Priist Holmes was an undrafted free agent
so was Arian Foster.
Bush has miles, and he is slower than he was four years ago.
Bush was a backup to McFadden. Lets not forget that.
You have to give backup’s a chance first. Lets give him a him a chance instead of judging quickly that he wouldn’t be a good replacement based him being just a backup. RBs have went from being backups to good starters before (look at felix jones).

I think we need to focus FA on Defense and the Draft on offense.
Obviously we need the bpa, and any member of any staff will tell you they do that regardless.

with our mid-late round picks we could pick up a pretty good back and/or sign a veteran for cheap.I like Bush but he will be too expensive.

what about vick ballard out of miss st?
Height: 5-10. Weight: 2157
Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
Arm: 31 1/8. Hand: 9 1/2.
Projected Round (2012): 4-5.
1/16/12: Ballard started out the season very strong, but he ended up with only two 100-yard rushing games against a conference opponent. This year, Ballard totaled 1,189 yards and 10 touchdowns for an average of 6.1 yards per carry. To end 2011, he ran for 180 yards against Wake Forest after totaling 144 yards against Ole Miss.
Teams sold out to stop Ballard and make Mississippi State beat them through the air. He has a nice combination of size and speed. Ballard could be a good sleeper running back on the third day of the draft.
8/18/11: The junior college product Vick Ballard had a solid debut for Mississippi State last season. He ran for 968 yards on 186 carries (5.3 average) with 19 touchdowns. Ballard was instrumental in sealing their 10-7 road victory over Florida. He is a physical, downhill runner who is capable of logging a large amount of carries. The Bulldogs are a program on the rise, and Ballard figures to be their workhorse back in 2011.
wouldnt mind him
played against good defenses in the SEC, but id prefer Tyler(probably because im a USC fan lol)

Hey guys, what's the general consensus from Raider Nation about re-signing/tagging Bush vs. letting him walk?
The guy is a beast, no doubt….and you’ve got McFadden coming back as well. Am a Cincy fan and am interested in our perspective……

he will most likely cost too much to keep
rbs are high paid so tagging a backup will make no sense. He will be making more than DMC. So unless he is willing to take a hometown discount he will most likely look to start on another team. So unless you guys are willing to let cedric benson go you prob will not land him either. Dont forget hes 27 so much not tread left on those tires
I'm not for signing him personally, kind of split on our site about that subject.
We have two holes to fill at both our G spots, so to me it doesn’t make any sense to sign a big money RB before taking care of that problem. He is tough though and will be 28 when season starts too I believe.

i was
a big benson fan a few years ago, i dont know what his deal is but he only thing i can think of is he doesnt want to deal with a running back committee and wants more touches
That's exactly it, he looked like a school kid who just got put into time-out last year when he would come out.
Then he would start publicly criticizing play calling, etc. He had a couple really good years in 08-09, but between 10-11 really has been on the decline. He’s really worn out his welcome with most Bengal fans now.

Agreed there, but we already kind of have a LJ in Bernard Scott.
We just need more of a pound it between the tackles guy who can get 20-25 carries. From what I’m hearing, sounds like Bush isn’t really the “bellcow” type back.

Yeah, remember that out of L'ville.
I think with his age (going to be 28) and price tag, I’d just assume let someone else roll those dice. McFadden is a real beast, hopefully he can stay healthy for you guys next year.

no offense but bernard scott is not very good
he had plenty of chances and couldnt do anything with them. he is not a game changer and no DC fears him
Scott is ok, we just really haven't utilized him the way I think we could.
I see James and think he reminds me of Scott. Change of pace guy, not the featured back. Especially with his size.

if you let benson go for bush I think that will be a mistake
Benson showed that he can handle a full workload. Bush is a very good rb 2 where he pounds the defense after after they are tired from chasing the speed back around but i dont like him when he gets a majority of the carries
I would tend to agree from what I've heard.....
I think (and hope) we are looking at bolstering the line during FA and grabbing a RB in rounds 2-3 (if Richardson is gone of course).

Okay, I think it's a little premature to start thinking a Fresno st. guy can be a Mike Bush at this level
but I agree it’s looking more and more like McKenzie will go the route similar to that of how they approached it in GB and look for young and hungry guys who come cheap and are looking to earn money.
For every hundred guys like this kid who come into the league, maybe 15 make teams and get time, and maybe 3 become guys like Mike Bush. If you only look at statistical performances you’ll miss that this guy carried us through a tough stretch of McFaddenless schedule and we became extremely more one dimensional as the season progressed without a spell back, without the ability to take the extra guy out of the box, and without Ford/Moore to make the defense respect the flats and perimeter enough to not just wait for Mike Bush all the time.
Michael Bush is a special talent with rare hands and blocking ability and we’ll miss him if he goes… maybe more than we will McFadden, whom I love when he’s playing, but it’s only half the time. MB played sixteen games.

with all due respect to Bush, he is only here because he was drafted
now that he’s a free agent he doesn’t care where he plays except for the fact that he wants to start and make good money. I don’t think its about sentiment.
Agreed
Bush is a strong back and we need reliability with McFadden.

I agree!
Bush is a warrior and should garner that type of respect…

No Disrespect to Bush
In a perfect world It would be nice to get Michael Bush back and have him and McFadden through out the season working in tandem to put a stomping on the rest of the league. I don’t know if the Raiders can do that, hope so. Lanyae is probably not the answer for sure.
I would like to see a college back up get a burr under his saddle and just take off and show some true talent that has not been seen or expected. It does happen, look at Arian Foster on the Texans, he was on the practice squad when he figured out that practice squad guys can make the team and that was all it took for him to get the motivation to make the team, Look at Sterling Moore, a walk on undrafted free agent that our HC could not see as a talented player who didn’t give up and ended up as a starting rookie in the Superbowl.
My hope is that our new staff has the ability to see possible talented players and not see them as just a backup in college. Lanyae has not given me any reason to believe he is going to be great or even good, but I would say he has the speed and size to show some hope. Time will tell
"Committed To Excellence" Mostly just "Committed" though
The more
the better, competition is a great thing in training camp. I hope we retain Bush, but we need serious depth with McFadden being injured so often.
"We can't stop here... This is bat country."
If Reggie is a talent evaluator like they say he is?
Reggie shouldn’t have a problem finding a power RB if the Raiders lose Bush. There’s always some good RB’s found in the later rounds, even undrafted ones. Well see how good Reggie is at being a talent evaluator with the Raiders lack of draft picks.
They say RB’s are a dime a dozen now days, and just about any RB can look good behind the right offensive line. Raiders have a pretty damn good offensive line when it comes to the run, so lets see if Reggie can strike gold with only spending a dime on a RB. If Reggie can’t? He’s not cracked up to be what has been advertised. And if he’s smart, he won’t pay Bush big money.
Raiders better focus in the defense first and foremost. Getting a replacement for Bush shouldn’t be hard to do in today’s NFL.
You guys ready for this....
Sign Branch long term. Tag Bush and trade him….to the Patsies for a 2nd rounder. their gonna lose Green-ellis, Woodhead is crap and Billichek knows it. I hate the thought of it too…. but we have been trading and dealing with the Pats the past couple of seasons. The Pats also have another stock pile of picks this year in the 1st and 2nd. $8 millie is too much for a backup for 1 year. I love me some Bush too….but we really have to get some talent on defense!
I believe the Giants have long coveted us for Mike Bush too
and if there’s any truth to rumors they’re interested in Boss again, they’ll be working hard to keep their championship squad intact—on of the most difficult challenges for Super Bowl victors in this era of football.

oops.
and that makes them interesting trade prospects as well, as something packaging these two looks possible.
If it’s not already clear, I don’t want to trade Bush or McFadden, but think McKenzie will be a shrewd GM in this aspect, and if an offer is one we can’t refuse, he won’t.

They won't.
They got talent at RB through last year’s draft with Ridley and Vereen. Both look promising.
Reason I think that I doubt they’ll let go of Green-Ellis is because he has been so damn dependable. Not a flashy back, but he never fumbles, usually gets positive yardage, and has been a good blocker. =/
