Oakland Raiders 2012 Draft: Trumaine Johnson, CB, Montana

Piggybacking on Levi's news that the Oakland Raiders may have 3rd, 4th, 5th (2) and 6th Round draft picks in this year's draft, let's take a look at one player who MAY fall down to the Nnamdi pick. (Projected to be from 97th-100th)

I could not think of a better player to take that mantle than the 6'3 , 210 pound cornerback out of Montana, Trumaine Johnson. Below is some video of Trumaine:

Born on New Year's Day 1990 in Stockton California, Johnson would be a steal if he were to be had with the Raider's 3rd round comp pick.

In four seasons at Montana, Trumaine asserted himself as a force on defense. through his forst three seasons he broke up 23 passes and finished his career with 15 interceptions and two touchdowns.

By the looks of his profile picture on Twitter, he definitely has a "Raider Body".

What do you guys think?

Hmmm

CB, FS, LB - Maybe DT/DE

This is what we are taking in for our first 3 picks. With those high picks…Reggie will have to take a look at the Big Board and see what talent has dropped, AS WELL AS, see what positional needs can be filled by the talent available.

I’ve seen TJ play for Montana a couple of times. I follow UC Davis and even as a true freshman he was making plays against a pretty stout FCS, Pro-Style passing game in Davis. Johnson had 3 picks in the two games I saw in person, one almost returned for a touchdown. He has great size and is very gifted, but I wonder what kind of learning curve he will have once in the pros. He has skipped the E/W Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl…he should be there for the Combine, but that’s just for the Athletic Matrix…he’ll have that luster on him because of his size, and the success at Montana, which is essentially, a BCS style program on the FCS level…however, there’s only so much game tape of him against top tier talent, try and watch the @ Tennessee game from the 2011 season.

Mayock and Kiper Jr. are not the end all for evaluating talent. He could drop, but teams with tons of picks will likely take him earlier than #96…likely. If he’s available, Johnson will be hard to not select…and he’s a NorCal kid.

Stockton Native

The video only showed a few things about him. I like that he is from STOCKTON!!! WOOOO!! And I like that hit he made and then picked the receiver up. Class!

But I wish more videos came up for him. I’d like to see more.

Big Time

Trumaine will not make it to the 3 round. I blead silver and black. The Raiders getting Tru is like hitting the lottery. loseing Standford Rout we need a all around player. Tru will be perfect for that spot. when the ball comes his way he tranforms from a CB to WR running that ball back. its like getting two players for the price of one. now thats a steal that wont make it to the 3 round but I have my fingers crossed that he dose make it to the Raider Nation.

At 6'3", he's very tall for a Corner. I would switch him to FS.

to be quicker than receivers you have to be, you must be, smaller. Darrelle Revis is only 5’11".
While it would be nice to have this guy against the big receivers out there, he may not have the agility to man up against the small guys like Welker, Bess, LLoyd, etc.

I would draft him and convert to a FS.

These days it's all about size, strength, and speed at the position. It holds especially true in our division

with all the “trees” as Nnamdi used to refer to them. Will a CB be the first order of business in the draft? I don’t know, unless of course he’s the best player available. I’m still leaning towards lb. But I wouldn’t be mad at a pick like this kid, but might prefer we let him fall to our second pick or even later. I think another linebacker and hopefully a game changer is what we’ll need.

First post on S&BP, but have been following the site religiously for a while now...

Johnson is solid, but I agree with the others above- highly unlikely he will last until we pick. Definitely would take him if he was available though! I also like Nigel Bradham as a backup OLB if he could be taken in the 4th or 5th round (possibly too high for him, but the later he is available, the more valuable I think he becomes)..

welcome aboard, sir! good to have you join

can’t believe we’re so close to combine and then draft time again. Checking out Bradham now…

impressive on tape

you see a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage with a great nose for separating the guy from the ball, and it’s not easy to see a weakness in his game. Could be a solid pick, especially in the fourth or fifth round. I think we need several linebackers really, and won’t be surprised if we don’t go that route, for a change.

We have to get him if avaiable he's from the 209! Lol

In all seriousness tho I’ve never seen him play before but looks to be a hard hitting football player that’s pretty much all u could see from that video and has great size I’m sure he would be the biggest corner in the league ! Imagine him against the bigger receivers ala Brandon Marshall and megaton. I would love to have this kid on board!!!

Beast!

I go to Sac State and have seen Johnson play many times…the guy is a flat out beast. I think he would be a great fit for our D but i doubt he falls to us that late.

Another mid round CB?

Raiders already used two mid round picks in Van Dyke and Chekwa last year. Should the Raiders do it again? I hardly doubt Johnson could jump right in and start in the NFL and make an impact like the Raiders need being short handed at CB. Raiders better target a veteran free agent CB like Porter or Finnegan to help the Raiders secondary. The Raiders should try to find a starter with that compensatory 3rd round pick, maybe along the lines. Or maybe even a Power RB if the Raiders lose Bush.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Johnson as a project CB, but can the Raiders afford to take him and let him develope with their first pick, when they already have Van Dyke and Chekwa, that’s above the level of Johnson? Simply because Chekwa and Van Dyke now have some experience.

I thought Chekwa was playing fairly well before he sustained a season ending injury. Maybe the Raiders can pair Chekwa up with a good veteran CB and be OK at the corners. Or maybe even Van Dyke.

If McKenzie follows the same process as the Packers drafting strategy? He’ll draft a offensive or defensive lineman first. That’s what the draft is all about, finding starters in their first year, in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds.

never seen the kid play, but unless we go after a vet db, then we definitely need some help in that department. i agree with a previous post he may be better suited as a safety, but thats just an idea. personally, from what ive heard about him, he wont be there when we pick.

Regarding Cliff Harris

No maturity whatsoever…he learned nothing in Eugene and got kicked off the team, all the talent in the world without any focus. If we somehow land a 7th round pick then I’d do it…but I think after he interviews Cliff Harris will become an UDFA…you can’t invest on what that kid presents himself as. He’s going to have to earn his paper the hard way, because that’s the path he chose the minute a relatively laid back program like UO kicked him out. I’ll say one thing though, he could be a dynamite punt returner in the NFL, and the Raiders do need more talent returning punts…I don’t want to see D. Moore back there ever again.

by Matt Henry on Feb 19, 2012 7:53 PM PST reply actions

UDFA only for Cliff, if he has even worked out he lost so much speed between 2010-2011 he doesn't appear to work on his game..
