Lamest HOF Ever! Tim Brown Denied...

Just got done reading the HOF selections. Not happy....pretty damn disgusted and am of a mind that the whole system for selection is bullshit. It just boggles the fucking mind. What little there is of mine after 2011....

I just dont undertand the criteria for choice. Obviously, being one of the premeire wide receivers and punt returners in the modern era doesnt count. Or is it just being Mr. Raider? Please express yourself, o brothers and sisters of the Nation....

I agree, got to be second best reciver of all time and best Raider reciver ever, of course I`m a little bias but definantly should be in HOF by now

by BikeRaider on Feb 4, 2012 6:14 PM PST via mobile reply actions

i got to agree

do not understand why tim brown can’t get in the hall of fame. i think curtis deserved to get in, i mean, he has the 3rd most rushing yards of all time. some people that should get in just don’t can’t get in, and brown is near the top of that list

I don't remember where, but I recall watching some NFL insiders talking about the HoF

And how it’s a really messed up system determining who does and doesn’t get put in. They basically said it’s something of a joke because no one really know what the criteria is or how these 40 individuals (whoever they are) make their decisions.

The worst part about this year? Cris Carter and Andre Reed made the top 10 finalist list (don’t ask me why they bother whittling it down from 15 to 10 in the first place), but neither of them made the HoF either. Since Brown didn’t even make the top 10 it can be assumed that he’ll be denied next year (at the very least) until there are fewer WRs on the list.

Seriously, it’s something of a travesty at this point. I get increasingly pissed off about Brown being denied the Hall of Fame with each passing year.

I'm not complaining about this

Tom Flores
Ken Stabler
Jim Plunkett
Cliff Branch
Ray Guy

after they get in then I’ll complain they are at the top of the list of HOF snubs IMO…

I do agree, Branch should go in before Brown,

Everybody just wants to look at numbers. There great for evaluating a player at the time, but you can’t compare stats, unless the players played during the same period (within 2 or 3 years of each other)
Take Branch & Brown, both great, but stat wise, Brown looks more impressive. But look closer, and you might not be so convinced;
1. Branch played before the pass happy West Coast Offense became popular, Brown after
2. Brown had well over twice as many rec, but his other stats were not twice as much
3. Branch did more after he caught the ball @ 17.3 ypc opposed to 13.7 ypc for Brown
4. Branch played when cheap shots were the name of the game, Brown when they were frowned upon, and penalized
5. Brown played 16 games, while Branch played mostly 14
6. Brown has a lot of catches, Branch has a lot of Super Bowl rings
7. IMHO, their both pretty equal considering all the different variables.
8. So all being non comparably equal, Branch has waited longer, so he should go before Brown.

I love Branch, too

But one thing I will say for Tim is that Brown rarely had the talent at the other receiver positions—Branch played on better teams if memory serves. Tim was THE quality Raider on a lot of his teams whereas Branch was a star alongside a bunch of other good players that played together as a team.

by worldblee on Feb 5, 2012 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

I hear what your sayin,

But when you say that, it reminds me that Cliff wasn’t used near as much as Tim was. Cliff was almost a clutch player the way I remember it, which makes his numbers all the more impressive. They used to pop one out to Branch on 1st down, either down field or 1st down worthy, but when that didn’t go well, they would use Shell, Upshaw, & Lawrence to open holes, then blast Mark van Eeghen in the hole for 3-4 yds a shot until they got another 1st down. Then again, hit Branch or someone else ect, ect… Tim was like the new age Mark van Eeghen work horse. Tim & Cliff were equally both awesome, just in different ways.

According to Wiki

Tim Brown is 4 on there alltime list behind Cris Carter
1094 Receptions
14,934 yds recieving
13.7 yards per reception.

Pretty sad when Superbowl winners and great name players don’t get in the HOF. God only knows how the hell they make the choices each year. I will say one thing for sure though, some really goods players didn’t get in this time.

Would be funny as hell to have a Raider Nation Occupy the HOF. Better check the Blue laws for alchohol purchasing and consumption in Ohio.

Well considering that the votes are polled from former players and coaches...

it’s pretty obvious how they make their decision, they vote their franchises’ players in and fuck over whatever franchise they spent their career hating. Several HOF voters have blatantly come out and said they will never vote in a Raider, it’s a pretty retarded system to decide who is worthy of the HOF.

I get pissed when I think about a blowhard, like Micheal Irvin, getting in first ballot and another year goes by and guys like Tim and Cris Carter get snubbed. 1000+ catches, 100+ TD’s, over a decade as high level players doesn’t count for shit, these days. It seems the only numbers that count are the amount of rings you’ve got. Irvin and Lynn Swann, for examples, numbers pale in comparison to Timmy’s, but they’re in. SMFH. Of all the Raider greats, that aren’t in, the snubbing of Tim Brown irks me the most.

One could argue...

that it was harris on the offense. Plus it wasn’t like Swann was a first ballot hall of famer. He retired in 1982, was eligible in like 1988, but didn’t make it until 2001. So it took the so called media darling like what 13 years to get into hall of fame. Plus it wasn’t like Swann didn’t have some good seasons. 3 time pro bowler, super bowl MVP, 1 x AP 1st team selection and 2x AP 2nd team selection and a member of the NFL 1970’s All decade team.

by bslack32 on Feb 5, 2012 10:02 AM PST up reply actions

It would be a better argument

Swann only played 8 seasons and never had a 1000 yard season just some Rooney favoritism and rings…

PS Branch has 3 rings and better numbers than Swann

Al Davis the Greatest Raider of all times... You will live forever in the hearts of true Raider fans...RIP

by samiam2112 on Feb 5, 2012 10:17 AM PST up reply actions

Not saying

Branch doesn’t deserve to be in the Hall, just saying that Swann deserves to be there too. And you would think that Branch would have better numbers considering that he played like 5 more seasons. Plus if you take the numbers for the first 9 years of Branch’s career and compare them to the entire career of Swann, while Branch still has more receptions and yards, it isn’t that much better. Plus Swann has 4 rings. But still if Swann was the media darling, shown so much Rooney favoritism then why wasn’t he put into the fall of fame sooner than he was. Why did it take 13 years? This is like saying Bush’s parents bought him his grades in college and then laughing at the fact that he was a C student. What his parents didn’t love him enough to buy him a couple of B’s? Swann was so much of a media darling that it took him 13 years since he was first eligible to be inducted. Also it wasn’t like Branch exactly was a 1000 yard receiver every year, he was only a thousand yard receiver twice. And in the same period of time of 9 seasons, Branch only averaged 100 more yards than Swann. If you compare the averages of Branch’s entire career yardage with Swann’s, Swann comes out ahead.

Rooney favoritism then why wasn’t he put into the fall of fame sooner than he was. Why did it take 13 years?

Look it up there are far more Steelers in the Hall than Raiders yet they both were very dominant teams in the same era… If you don’t think the Rooney’s are favored you’re delusional!

Al Davis the Greatest Raider of all times... You will live forever in the hearts of true Raider fans...RIP

by samiam2112 on Feb 5, 2012 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

Here is the problem with your...

argument. The Raiders were established in 1960, while the Steelers were around since 1933. 12 of their 25 total HOFers played before the decade before the Steelers won their first 4 super bowls. Also it isn’t far more, the Steelers have a total of 25 HOFers while the Raiders have 20. I’m counting Woodson for both sides. So I don’t know what you consider far more.

Now if you compare Swann’s numbers to the great receivers who played in the past 20 years, the Tim Browns, the Jerry Rices, the Cris Carters, the Andre Reeds, then yeah his numbers would look average, but so would Branch’s. Like someone else said in another post, you have to look at when they played

Al Davis the Greatest Raider of all times... You will live forever in the hearts of true Raider fans...RIP

by samiam2112 on Feb 6, 2012 1:56 PM PST up reply actions

One of the accusations

against Bush was that his parents not only bought his way into the colleges that he went to, but that they bought his grades too. Yes I love Bush so much that I voted for him a total of 0 times. I love him so much that I didn’t vote for him to be president. I love Bush so much that I personally believe he is one of the worst presidents in US history. Yep what can I say, mad love there.

So because I don’t have a problem with Swann being in the hall of fame, I love Swann? I never once said that folks like Branch doesn’t deserve to be in the Hall. I just don’t have a problem with Swann being in the Hall. I was also making the point that if Swann was such a media darling and shown so much favoritism because of the Rooneys, then why wasn’t he put into the Hall much sooner. Am I upset that folks like Brown, Branch, Plunkett and Flores aren’t in the Hall. Yeah I am, but I’m not going to be some whiny little bitch about it, screaming oh it’s a conspiracy. There are great players from all teams that deserve to be in the Hall of fame, some that have been waiting for a long time. So it is a conspiracy there? Cris Carter isn’t in the hall of fame and he was never a Raider. Is there a conspiracy there? I just believe that eventually all those guys will get into the hall. The only person I don’t see going into the Hall is Ray Guy and that isn’t because of any damn conspiracy, it’s because of the position he played.

And finally, I’ve always been a Raiders fan and I was never a Steelers fan. But I do have some respect for them. As a Michigan fan, I don’t like Ohio State, but I do have some respect for them.

Tim Brown has basically been deemed not Hall of Fame worthy based on the lousy Raider teams he played on.

Thats all bullshit whether Brown played on a 2-14 Raiders team or a 14-2 Raiders team stats are stats and statistically Brown is one of the greats, he shouldnt be punished because the Raiders at the time were unable to get all the right personnel in place.

The Raider organization needs its own Hall of Fame, Friar Mark Davis Tuck needs to get started on it asap. We have to many great players that are not in the HOF and probably will never be, sadly.

by Raider08 on Feb 5, 2012 12:03 AM PST reply actions

apparently these people never watched football

Tim Brown should have been in on the first ballot he was eligible for. I don’t understand the selection process, his stats aren’t going to magically get better for next years selections, so what would make him more eligible next year? This is typical media prejudice against the Raiders.

by Scrivley on Feb 5, 2012 12:13 AM PST reply actions

Thats right he should have made it his first year eligable,

Though i was okay with him not going in the year Jerry Rice did. To be honest i think he has less of a chance making it next year than he did this year. Shame

by Raider08 on Feb 5, 2012 12:26 AM PST up reply actions

The biggest problem with the HOF is the committee itself, a bunch of non-ball players!!!

Look, Cris Carter, Tim Brown, & Andre Reed, were to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th all time receivers behind Jerry Rice when they retired. Charles Haley has 5 Super Bowl rings, more importanly when he left the 49ers and went to Dallas there was a clear power shift and Dallas won 2 more Super Bowls…And Aeneas Willams, CB one of the best ever at the position, he just played for the worst team in the NFL most of his career. There is Not one Hall of Famer that will deny any of these guys!!! And I will just say it Ray Guy…I got into it with Peter King , Sports Illustrated about Ray, he told me well Ray is the 75th rated punter statistically, I told Peter, look he did not have to kick the ball 60 yards a punt, the Raiders were primarily just outside field goal range and Ray would pin teams on their 2 to only face our Defense… Had Ray needed longer punts he would have had them, and he would take over games, the hang time, the opposing return yards against his punts should all be considered. The problem with these voters is they’re writers, most never even played Pop Warner. They need a player committee with voting rights as well. I believe every player inducted this year deserves to be in, however, its time to add the above guys, and by the way there is one player that has NO BUSINESS in the HOF that is Jan Stenerud are you kidding me!!! WTF…That is why it upsets me Ray Guy is not in, how do you vote this guy in and NOT Ray Guy… Jim Plunkett two time Super Bowl QB, only QB with multiple Super Bowls not in. Lester Hayes, Cliff Branch, all of our guys deserved to be in that dominated in their era.. It is really time for a change in who is selecting and committee of HOF Players should be included…

by Rodney Sacramento on Feb 5, 2012 4:10 AM PST reply actions

My stance on Guy is simple you have to look at how he changed the game...

Game changers effect the game on a grander scale and the stats don’t always tell the story.

I think they get in before Timmy. I don’t think Timmy gets in for a few more years. It is total bullshit as Brown is in the top 10 receivers of all time IMO. I’m bias as a mother fucker though so I won’t continue to sing the man’s praises. No question

His numbers are good enough, but I think over a career Tim Brown was better. Martin was very multi-dimensional but he suffered from the same thing Brown suffered from, teams that didn’t win the big dance. His career with the Jets and Patriots stand out and merit HOF status, but not yet. His rank amongst all time backs is more debatable. Brown’s is not. Over the career and with their respective ranks within their fields (WR and RB), Brown deserves it more than Martin right now. I won’t fault them for taking him in, he deserves it. But respectively, even against some of the all time great Raiders, I would argue they deserve to be in before Martin.

Tim deserves a nod no question...

Even though I’m not a huge Tim Brown fan he deserves to be there his career has everything but the ring.

When you look at Martins productivity and durability those are the things that stuck out to me. No back seems to be able to hold up to the pounding anymore. 1600 yards at age 31 that’s amazing!

RB is a tough position

Mainly because the Defensive players are becoming athletic freaks. If these guys were around during Jim Brown’s days, RB’s would be fucked. You’ve got linebackers running a 4.4 40 that weigh 260-270 and are giants. Times have changed. I was curious as to why the Bus didn’t get in either? I think I noticed the change when Terrell Davis wore down after that 2nd Super Bowl. He was fairly young too. Eddie George as well. That kind of hard nose style just doesn’t work in today’s NFL. Martin reminded me more of players like Marshall Faulk. They could catch, run hard, and played hard all the time. Maybe that’s a factor in this HOF stuff, the value of a RB. I’ll concede that end. Still, as for players, even Chris Carter is getting screwed. And I think the Tuna got rejected right? The NFL is funny that way.

All of the names mentioned will get in...

Bus will get in Carter has to wait because of his first few years there still a lil stink on him.

But the defensive freak factor is big the increased impact as larger masses collides with mass and a greater speed equaling a destructive force at impact.

Yup. Fuck 'em all

""The massive Raider Nation is beyond doubt the sleaziest and rudest and most sinister mob of thugs and wackos ever assembled."--Hunter S. Thompson
"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and fuck -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get fucked. Someday, the Raiders will be strong again, and they will dip the ball in shit and shove it down the throats of the wholesome, white, heartland teams that pray together and don't deliver late hits." - George Carlin.
