A Look At Jason Tarver, Gruden's Young Doppelganger

If the word out there is true, then we are in for some good times, Nation! Word on the Tweet Block is that the Raiders have hired Jason Tarver, the Co-Defensive Coordinator for the Stanford Cardinal. This guy brings it to practice every day and there is no quit. Here is some of an article by Tom Fitzgerald of SFGate.com:

In 2001 Jason Tarver had finished three years as a graduate assistant on UCLA coach Bob Toledo's staff. He had a master's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology.

He could have gone into drug design or research, or to medical school. He had thought about being an orthopedic surgeon after shattering his knee as a high school safety.

But there he was, sitting at a conference table at the 49ers' headquarters. Bill Walsh was there. So was Steve Mariucci, then the head coach, along with others.

"Why the heck do you want to be doing this?" they asked.

He's been asked the question quite a few times over the years in a career that led him this year to become co-defensive coordinator at Stanford. He and Derek Mason guide a unit that leads the nation in run defense.

Tarver had gotten his interview with the 49ers through the coaching network. After a long talk, they offered him the keys to a club van and told him he could either take them, go to his father's home in Livermore and come back to work - or take a job he had been offered with the Green Bay Packers. He said, "Give me the keys."

Here's all you need to know about his skills as a coach: He was hired by Mariucci, then retained by Dennis Erickson, Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary. Counting Jim Tomsula, who coached the 2010 finale after Singletary was fired, he worked for five head coaches in one organization.

Jim Harbaugh would have kept him, too, but David Shaw offered him a key position at Stanford.

He's 37 now, and still gets asked: "Why coach?"

This is definitely a refreshing choice and just what we need.

Raiders got themselves a real scientist
Tarver, 37, and a Phi Beta Kappa, has a B.S. degree in chemistry, a master’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and twice received the departmental prize for distinguished teaching at UCLA.

Jason Tarver:
1996–1997 West Valley College(LB/DB/ST)
1998–2000 UCLA (GA)
2001–2003 San Francisco 49ers (OQC)
2004 (asst. RB) San Francisco 49ers
2005–2010 49ers (OLB)
2011 Stanford (co-DC/ILB)

Played “D”-n-"ST"s as “P” 2 seasons
Coached “D” 10 seasons
Coached “O” 4 seasons
16 seasons total

Ya think maybe his time as “OQC”-n-"RB"s coach might have added to his ability to understand how to stop the run???

you know this guy retained some nolan/singleterry

knowledge about true old school hard nosed defense’s that stop the run and tackle hard, then took it to stanford and helped pump up that D. now he’s gonna bring it back up to the highest level. inspiring hire!

I like his philosophy with them Stanford Beasts

If he brings that mentality to Oakland, I like our chances of a turnaround. Still, it would be ridiculous for him to turn this team around in a season. You don’t go from worst to top 10 very often. Takes a special coach and some special players to do that. I am getting a bit more excited though. 2012-13 Raiders a defensive team????? Hmmmm, sounds good :D

by lakers007raiders on Feb 5, 2012 8:36 AM PST reply actions

You can do it the other way around

You dont go easily from no.27 raniked D to something decent, but you dont go from no.11 to no.27 very often either, with pretty much the same players. All we need is decent coaching, I like the chances dor Tarver. I am more concerned with the offense working under Knapp than the D working under Allen and Tarver.

Btw he does remind me of Gruden is some way

Only that he has a defensive background instead of offensive.

I like the fact that he is an ILB Coach:

He worked directly with Willis and will probably not stand for McClain’s buffoonary

Goodbye to Plain Vanilla Defense

We know we won’t be playing a regular season game and have Collinsworth say again, "The Raiders defensive sets…they look like what most other teams run in the first week of training camp, before they really install anything."

Sounds like a solid young guy for the job

I like him better than any of the other names mentioned so far, and I also like the idea of our coaching staff being a bunch of young up-and-comers. Sure it could all go terribly wrong, but whatever. I’m on board if this guy lands the job.

If you could have asked me what the opposite of Chuck Bresnahan was...

I couldn’t have thought of a better name than Tarver! But man am I bummed about Saunders leaving. Our offense was riddled with injury and were still nearly able to carry a Bresnasuck defense to the playoffs…

Nice to see Allen thinking outside the box

This is much better than Manusky. I didn’t know much about Tarver but the guy is smart no doubt and seems to be a great teacher.

You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who makes people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.

Sounds like a very exciting hire

then again, I was very excited for what Biekert might bring. Then again there, I think it all lands on Bresnacan’t.

I love the things he preaches, and watching it in practice. Our team needs that, and I think I can see what the staff is bringing.

Man i have always thought science was a huge part of football

I’ve actually wondered why we don’t see more football players that were science majors. I remember seeing an NFL films episode on a tiny corner that played for the Cardinals where he just laid people out. He later became a science teacher and had always just looked at the angles scientifically when hitting people.

Figure between Allen and Tarver

a wealth of badly needed new input on defense.

We still need DBs and LBs coaches though, don’t we?

Yes we do

I wonder if Biek or Woodson get interviews…

Saunders not being hired means he still a coach of the Raiders at this point

He emphasizes tackling.

That would be a good start for this defense.

After watching our guys taking bad angles and not being able to wrap up opposing RB’s and WR’s, this should get guys to at least think about tackling.
We shall see if it actually helps.

Oh yeah the Pats lost haha

My pre- playoffs prediction came true, Giants SB Champions…

I was watching the celebration and kept thinking: that will be us celebrating on that stage soon….

I’m excited about our new coaching staff and GM, can’t wait for free agency and the draft…everyone’s talking about rebuilding around here but I expect this team to get to the playoffs and make some noise pretty darn soon….we’ll be dangerous my friends, we have the talent, Dennis will bring discipline and make them play as a REAL team…we’ll take the NFL by storm! And it all starts 2012…

All I know is.

Tarver wasn’t Allen’s 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th choice to run the Raiders defense. Slim pickings is why Tarver is in Oakland. Will he be any good? That remains to be seen. I can’t call it an successful hire by watching a 5 minutes video. I’m more intrigued with the fact the Raiders are switching to the 3-4 defense, than the hire of Tarver.

Tarver does seem like a bright coach. In others words, I don’t feel dumber after listening and watching the video above. Wish I could say the same about Reggie MCKenzie.

by Captain Chaos on Feb 6, 2012 4:49 AM PST reply actions

I must have missed something. Where was it said that we’re switching to 3-4?

by TrashyRambo on Feb 6, 2012 7:59 AM PST up reply actions

I would love to see multiple fronts.

I think we will mostly be a 4-3 team because we have the personnel for it and coach Allen is a 4-3 guy – but sprinkling in a little 3-4 wouldn’t hurt.

I see that Tarver and Knapp coached at SF at the same time

I don’t see any career overlaps for Allen and Tarver. I wonder if he was a Knapp recommendation.
