Around SBN: The Most Dangerous Division in Sports

My thoughts on our immediate future, and my plan for evaluating late round rookies.

So the superbowl is over, and now I am primed for the offseason. FAs and rookies are in abundance, but first I want to evaluate where we are at now.

We still need a DC. That much is obvious. Our offense is fine where its at now.

This whole thing of Palmer vs. Campbell, who should be our starting QB.... just stop. Listen, I know that the INTs are what scare people about Palmer, and thats the main reason why we should start Campbell. But in where our offense is going to, Campbell is not the right guy for it. We are running a vertical, attacking style offense. Campbell can't throw accurately beyond 20-30 yards. He would be fine in an offense similar to the pats, but not the Raiders. Besides, with an offseason who knows how good Palmer will be next year. As of now, I will start Palmer with the potential he has in our offense. If he is better than last year, than I see some great things.

Trade Mcfadden? What?! Why the hell would trade this guy. Yeah, he hardly played last season. But that is no way for people to get discouraged about the guy. Next year, he should be healthier since he didn't see the field for most of the games last season, and most importantly, he is a tremendous weapon. If Bush has to go, fine. We have Taiwan Jones in the wings. But McFadden is the playmaker Bush can NEVER be. McFadden adds another dimension to out offense, and he just makes it 10x deadlier.

Now that those questions are out of the way, how about our defense? Dennis Allen mentioned that we'll be a 3-4, 4-3 hybrid. I like that a lot. We'll get Matt Shaugnessy back, which will be huge for our overall DL. When he is back, I see a huge upgrade for next year. I like our rotation in the middle. I think Houston will be fine next year, probably better than last year with an offseason to help him out more as well. In our LB unit, we need improvement.McClain was bad last season. There is no question. I expect him to be better next season though. WImbley should play DE. I like him, but he is a pass rusher. We need another OLB to help contain the edge. If McClain is sucking this season, then we also need another MLB. CUrry is alright. Just wish he got better vs. the pass. Our secondary? SHould be fine. All we need is a FS. I think DVD and Chekwa will be huge additions next seasons. They are young and talented. Even Chekwa can play FS maybe. But we NEED to get turnovers on defense. That is the main key there.

And that's my opinion on the team, and what we have to do next year. Most problems are on the defensive side. We need to look at DE, DT, MLB, OLB, FS, CB. If anything for depth, or for starting. I'll be looking at rookies, and some rookies we'll get based on who there is in free agency. I'll try and get out as much as I can with school in the way.

Tarver.... okay thanks.

How does he look?

If we're running a hybrid 3-4, 4-3,

then their gonna need a nickle back. Their key in that situation.
Your right about about Carson. Other than his ability to perform in the West Coast Vertical game(a Davis creation), he wants to be a Raider. He’s from Fresno, played at USC, and suffered 8-9 years in Crapannati, but still put up 25,000 yds. He was also one of the 3 injured guys that triggered the new QB rules. The guy is home. Shit, he put up 417 in his last game. He’s not even on my worry list.
The DC, Tarver is an awesome choice. He chose coaching over a career as a doctor. A defense with brains. It doesn’t get any better than that.
What’s you reason on McClain’s improvement, just curious..

If you ever wanted to see Boise St play...may be a good chance. Love em or Hate em, they are always interesting; and now, no matter where you live, "They're Coming To Your City"

Rookies usually have sophmore slumps. Plus it hurts having a dumbass for a DC.

Also with Knapp in the fold; the opportunities for Palmer to try to win the game by himself will be limited.

This just means fewer INTs per pass attempt & a higher completion percentage. If we didn’t have somebody out there trying to show how much of an offensive genius he was all the time maybe the shorter passes on 3rd & 4 would lead to more 3rd down conversions than what we suffered through all last season.

Well

Let’s just hope the ZBS experiment goes better this time than it did last time, because that was a disaster. And if the line doesn’t have it down by the start of the season, every week that goes by that they’re still figuring it out, Palmer will be getting killed back there, and the running backs squashed at the LOS.

by rightnasty on Feb 6, 2012 12:26 PM PST reply actions

ZBS has nothing to do with pass protection. The zone blocking is a run blocking scheme only.

Also if I stand corrected our running game with some ZBS the last few years not including 2011 led to our running game being ranked light years ahead of all other statistical categories offensively or defensively.

Yeah

2007 was good, 2008 okay, but by 2009 our run game had dropped off to near the bottom. And if they we can’t run the ball, it’ll just mean more pressure on the QB. Hell it’d be like old times.

by rightnasty on Feb 6, 2012 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

That has nothing to do with what will happen now

We had some bad bad players, and (mostly) now do not. Mario henderson couldn’t excel in a “left tackle allowed to bring a club on the field” scheme

Raiders

The D line is fat and over paid…… Look at the Giants tireless efforts. The Raiders fade in the third quarter every week……………………… McClain is McLost. He should change his name to “Dancing Bear”….. On offense DHB doesn’t know how to catch the ball with his hands. 10 year old kids are better at that. Where are the coaches? Ther was no unity on the team after Campbell got hurt. They didn’t want to play for Palmer. It was way to obvious to watch the little click with Campbell and the receivers on the sidelines. They shouldn’t have been paid to fake injuries and mutaney.I think I.Q. test might just help a little bit before drafting these thugs……

How much do you think Branch is gonna cost?

I wouldn’t give him franchise money at this point.

I think he will get a similar deal that Roman Harper got last year

$25M / 4 years

Hopefully the fact that Weddle got some serious cash won’t have a huge influence but it might.

You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who makes people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.

He doesnt have Weddle's INT #s

Oo back up that kinda cash anyway. Harper seems like a good parallel for determining Branch though.

As per nfl.com

They are listing the Frachise tag value for a Safety at 6.2 million for 2012 down by about 2 million from last year

"Committed To Excellence" Mostly just "Committed" though

by GoldCityRaider on Feb 6, 2012 5:19 PM PST reply actions

that

sounds good, but I rather try to sign these guys to contracts and the deadline for TAG is feb 20

by RAIDER_FAN15 on Feb 6, 2012 7:12 PM PST up reply actions

you can tag someone to secure them and still sign a long term contract

if you sign them to a contract after you tagged them, the tag goes away. That being said tag branch and try to work something out during the season. Bush will be way too expensive to tag and most likely Rice, Forte and Lynch will be tagged. Hillis would be the one most likely to hit the FA market

by dawad34 on Feb 6, 2012 8:37 PM PST up reply actions

secondary looks fine?

we have one good cornerback, an ok strong safety impending free agent, and an over paid free safety who is injury prone.

i would say the secondary is the second weakest group after linebackers.

251.4 PYDS (27th)

This is our defensive passing yardage rank. I’m with you mob… it needs a lot of work.

I just think part of that mostly has to do with our LBs being inept at covering.

Our secondary has been fine covering people, although the FS and #2 CB positions need to be improved. But I believe that a lot of those passing yards come from our LBs.

Both corners were horrible in our last game

I have no confidence in the rooks or Johnson. Too bad we still didn’t have Sterling Moore.

by Raaddad on Feb 7, 2012 1:52 PM PST up reply actions

In our last game they were bad sure. But I look at an entire season.

And for most of the season, they were fairly good in covering. Its mostly the LBs that get passed against.

Also with a new DC we might get some pressure on the QB…we were not that good last year and that puts a ton of pressure on our rookies CB…and that fact they both were hurt…but I do think they both show promis…I don’t want to Tag Bush…sorry but he’s just not a game changer and not that fast and I don’t think he can be a #1 back…I like bush but we can find another RB for cheaper and we need the cash right now…It’s going to be real interesting to see who we keep and who we go after in FA…also I’m sure we are working contracts…I can only hope that our boys look good this year coming up…but I just really want to see Players who are dedicated…I hate the Pats…but man they have true players who play team ball and that shows…

Especially at the end of the super bowl...

Pats win because they cheat…. plain and simple. Ravens should have been in the SB and everyone knows it.

Yea the Ravens are a perfect example of why we don’t get rid of Palmer and keep Jason…so many plays left on the field by Flacco…yes he had better numbers then brady…truth be told that game should of been won easy if Flacco hits his guys that are open…and yes he had 1 great throw that was dropped…but anyway my point is…even with a great D…you need to score points…the Ravens and 40winers are both prime EX of this…

If by cheating you mean the pats simply placed their cameras in a spot where it was legal to place them before 2006

then yeah…. your right. Other than that, no competitive advantage was gained, so I don’t know how it would be considered “cheating.”
