CONFIRMED: Oakland Raider Cornerback Stanford Routt Gets Released

(Editor's Note: This news has been confirmed from multiple sources and from where I am sitting I see this as a shot over the bow to players who were overpaid by Mr. Davis. Stanford was our best corner last year and definitely had some trade value, so I am curious to know more about his structure )

The official Facebook for the Oakland Raiders just posted:

"The Raiders have released cornerback Stanford Routt."

Confirmed by Official Raiders Site: http://www.raiders.com/team/transactions.html

Star-divide

So far I don't see this news listed anywhere else but if it's legit it just goes to show that this team is in for a HUGE shake up this off-season. I can't say for certain whether this is a good thing or not. What we saw from the secondary this year was less than spectacular, but we've already been hard-pressed to find good corners, so to release our "star" corner is definitely an interesting move.

I'm confused

He was our only solid corner albeit extremely overpaid. Maybe he refused to restructure his deal? Guess were gonna be big players in FA

by footballfan2577 on Feb 9, 2012 2:45 PM PST reply actions

Lot of penalties

and he did get burned a decent amount for a corner that was suppose to be our Nnamdi replacement. I think this wasn’t a decision made lightly but I just don’t know. I’d be very worried if we don’t find some solid CB’s to add this off-season.

by raiders797 on Feb 9, 2012 2:47 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed ...

He did get burned way too much

I only make sense when nobody's listening.

Thats what i thought

Routt probably refused to take a pay cut. I would like him to be on our team, just not for 10 mil. Maybe for 4 million at most+ incentives.

Now we can probably go after finnegan and porter or maybe someone in the draft

Routt is a solid number 2 just cant justify his cap number vs production

This is what I love about fans

First it was "Routt is just as good if not better than “the False Raider”’ or whatever the hell people started calling Nnamdi to convince themselves they were ok with him leaving.

Now everyone is coming out saying oh this makes sense, he’s only a #2 CB anyway.

Not sure

But it bugs me too. Though I will say that I was never a big Routt fan. I was pretty upset that Davis decided to give him and Huff huge contracts instead of trying to resign Nnamdi.

Didn't tell you to think anything

Just think it’s funny that after we gave Routt that ridiculous contract last year and basically sent Nnamdi packing that everyone was pretty excited about Routt’s incredible “burn rate” (which is by far the worst statistic I’ve ever seen used as a measure of competency).

This season he was still cheered as a top CB by most on here, and now he gets cut and he’s suddenly “only a #2 CB anyway.”

by Terps12 on Feb 10, 2012 8:02 AM PST up reply actions

After the contract I was at least hopefull he would hold up to what he was being paid for.... Fact is he didn't.

After the play on the field you can’t pay him number 1 money. If the net yield of his body of work was as awful as it was… therefore some decisions have to be made.

Most people in the league view him as a 2nd corner so why is that so shocking?

Al Davis the Greatest Raider of all times... You will live forever in the hearts of true Raider fans...RIP

by samiam2112 on Feb 10, 2012 8:37 AM PST up reply actions

My shock was more that anyone got hyped for him as a #1 to begin with

It may surprise you, but I was never on the Routt bandwagon haha. He cashed in on a contract year. We got stuck with the average CB play for insanely above average money. I’d say he’s a #1, but not a top tier guy. Maybe in the 25-35 range.

I don’t necessarily agree with cutting him (unless he was refusing to restructure). Secondary was the weakest aspect of the team and he was definitely not the weakest aspect of the secondary. Unless the front office thinks they can lure two strong CBs in free agency with that money, I think this move makes us weaker.

by Terps12 on Feb 10, 2012 9:31 AM PST up reply actions

And again, I don't have a problem with you

I responded to your comment because it was one of the first I saw to say Routt wasn’t a top guy

I follow college basketball recruiting pretty heavily and the same shit happens with that. Anytime a recruit eliminates Maryland from his list, immediately people resort to “well he has a bad attitude”, “no thanks”, or “$$$$” implying the other school paid him. I think it’s weak to act like you don’t care about a player who left/got cut/chose a different school when you had previously liked him. Not saying this is you. If you soured on him during the season that’s fine, but its all too common for this site to turn on someone at the drop of a hat.

by Terps12 on Feb 10, 2012 9:40 AM PST up reply actions

Tough to be a top guy like this.
He allowed nine touchdown passes and led the league in penalties with 17.

17/120 defensive penalties 14% supposedly a league high but I can’t confirm it.
19 passes defended and 4 picks ranked 13th in this category

I don’t dislike Routt or blame him for the contract he signed. I also think he tried just sometimes things don’t work out… Rumor is they are not looking to resign him.

this reminds me of last year when the packers released AJ Hawk

They intended to keep him they just wanted to not pay the signing bonus. so instead of restrucring his contract they are waiving him and trying to draw up a new contract?

by dawad34 on Feb 9, 2012 3:01 PM PST reply actions

could be

He doesn’t seem cut out to be a number 1 CB, and there’s no way his contract could be justified so that could be the plan. Make a more reasonable contract. But lets face it, new management, new coaching, they may be cleaning house.

by RdrsNeedaStablerQB on Feb 9, 2012 3:04 PM PST reply actions

idk

He did severely under-perform, and given the situation with almost entirely new staff, this may be a matter of cleaning out players they see as detrimental to getting the team in top form.

by raiders797 on Feb 9, 2012 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

Let the chaffe blow away...

For better or worse, Routt was burned during key situations and on some occasions, the Raider reputation was the impetus for trigger happy referees to pull out the yellow flag. He’s a good player but I had the impression, our team expected more out of him. Some of his mistakes revealed a lack of intelligence in his play which left our defense vulnerable. I would have hoped that Coach Woodson would have had a larger impact on players such as Routt.

First shoe to drop in terms of rebuilding the defense

Too many overpaid guys on defense for the lack of production. Routt had a good year in a contract year, but struggled with consistency this past year. If he refused to restructure his overpaid contract, then I trust the team did the right thing here. With the lack of depth on defense across the board, keeping one overpaid guy limits at least a couple other positions of depth.

by S Jay Bruin on Feb 9, 2012 3:13 PM PST reply actions

Two ways to look at it

On one hand, this could be a move to pay Routt less. I think they released him and may resign him at a lower pay wage. I mean seriously, for what he was paid there are no excuses for that many penalties. On the other hand, the Raiders just said fuck it and cut their losses. I wouldn’t blame them either way. Facts, Routt was over paid, committed far too many penalties for an “elite” corner, and his pay was hurting our cap. I like Routt, I think some of those penalties were bullshit, but most were good calls against him. He needs to have better discipline then he has showed so far in his career. I hope he resigns under a reasonable contract and earns back the status many felt he was about to achieve. If its true and he’s gone, we are pretty much screwed at corner. He was the best we had. So lets see how this plays out. Interesting off season so far :P

by lakers007raiders on Feb 9, 2012 3:14 PM PST reply actions

Or another way to look at it.

The Defense is going to change. Not looking for “man corners” suggests the 3-4 will be in effect more than usual. Steelers don’t have a CB that would make another teams roster, but have a good defense. If the pressure is there on the QB and the run is stopped at the line of scrimage, the DB’s will look a lot better than they are. Look at the NY Giants. Everyone said Tom Brady would do this or that to their secondary. It seems like the front four had something to say about that. Especially in the fourth quarter. Looks like they have a Superbowl winning secondary now. Hmmm. I wonder…This is where we need to be.

Everyone has a plan 'till they get punched in the mouth.

I think almost any dynamic young coach will not be predominantly any single alignment, and expect to see they hybrid he sells

it will be interesting to see what personnel is retained to indicate just how much, and I feel Allen is kinda like Hue was with offense, who will use your personnel to your advantage, as they did with Von Doom. I think we’ve had guys that would benefit from some 34 for awhile, and even let some great guys go, so it will be nice to see and if it emerges as a strength and turns weaknesses into opportunities for us to make plays, I won’t mind if we go full time that way.

At least Routt can tackle, and cover (albeit with a large sum of penalties). But I can’t see keeping Huff and letting Routt walk for the same pay

by TD Rader on Feb 9, 2012 4:33 PM PST up reply actions

Makes sense

Routt, like too many of our defensive players, was getting paid too much for results that weren’t worth the money. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Huff released too.

by Chris2814 on Feb 9, 2012 3:18 PM PST reply actions

A rebel

I think his attitude is what got him canned. He has a lot of maturing to do, but could be a great CB if he actually tries. I do not think he was happy in Oakland. I talked to him a few times via private messages on Twitter. He is a really cool guy, but misunderstood. I do not think he takes criticism too well n likes attention. When your back is against the wall and a mob is screaming to chop your head off….how would you react? He has a short temper and playing in Oakland is why he had so many penalties. I’d say he would only have ~10 penalties if he was on another team. If he can translate his short temper into smart decision making rather than committing penalties he will be a force to be reckoned with. If a team can pick him up fairly cheap and they have someone work with him on his attitude…wow, it will be like Charles Woodson all over again.

by DelawareRaider on Feb 9, 2012 3:44 PM PST reply actions

He's no Charles Woodson

I’m not saying Routt can’t be good, but nothing I’ve seen from him is on the level Woodson is or was back in the day. I’d be perfectly happy having Routt on our team, just not for the money he was being paid. And that’s not even his fault.

And I do agree that on another team he probably would have fewer penalties called against him.

by Chris2814 on Feb 9, 2012 3:54 PM PST up reply actions

Some 2012 Cap Numbers

Seymour 15 million
Palmer 12 million
Wimbley 11 million
Kelly 8.8 million
McFadden 6,7 million
Curry 5.7 million
McClain 5.5 million
Huff 5.5 million
Henderson 4.7 million

These are just Cap numbers listed through spotrac.com for the 2012 season, don’t know whats bonus or garaunteed or base. Some big numbers that could possibly be reworked or removed considering what we have seen today. The numbers below Henderson are all 2.5 mil and below quickley dropping to below a million a year. This also doesn’t account for the 16 or what ever FA’s on the team.

by GoldCityRaider on Feb 9, 2012 4:01 PM PST reply actions

IMO

Seymour is worth the money. Still is a stud with attitude and commands the double team.
Palmer is the QB, and it should be the highest paid position.
Wimbley was over paid. He is an edge rusher, no more
Kelly is paid too much at 9 mil, but he did come on as of late. Needs a restructure for sure
McFadden, worth the dough… Pay him a little more for some better damn shoes too would ya?
Curry at 5.7 mil is too much. He was traded fro a 7th round pick. This deal has to be redone.
McClain at 5.5 seems a bit too much too. He regressed last year, and does stupid stuff off the field
Huff at 5.5 is a joke.
Henderson at 4.7 also seems high for a situational player. seems way too high when you add up the money to Jason and Tommy and John and see what they are paying for DTs

by TD Rader on Feb 9, 2012 4:39 PM PST up reply actions

No way Seymour is worth 15 million

You know our Defense had a ton of flags the past two season. Seymour was getting just as many flags as the rest of the team. teams don’t play oakland and say the only way we can win is if we double seymour. The same goes for Palmer no team is afraid of Palmer we have too many over paid player on this team. When you are paying the type of money we are paying you can’t lose 4 of 5 no matter who the DC is.

Seymour isn’t Double most of the time its Kelly. When you look at long runs McClain has to feel holes the size of a Truck. I am not saying thats all on seymour but since Seymour has been on our team we still haven’t stop the Run. Seymour playing end still doesn’t put fear in a OC. All you have to worry about when playing us is the bull rush. Seymour is a good player But he isn’t a 15 million dollar player

I believe the new regime will be much more in line with much of what you've argued for a long time

and this is the first of many moves to be an indicator of what’s to come. Wimbley, Kelly, Seymour, and Huff will be the next to either restructure significantly, accept what’s offered to them, or be waving goodbye.

Curry? nahhhhh

He played with some intensity while he was on the field this past season. And an important factor, he was making tackles. Too many of our players were making poor tackle after poor tackle, but Curry would land some hard hits and get after the ball.

I still can’t believe we didn’t keep a hungry CB like Sterling Moore, yet look at our CB roster. Didn’t make any sense. Makes me glad the team is under entirely new management.

I've never had a jersey problem

Because I won’t wear a shirt with another man’s name on the back of it. The few I have bought for gifts to my son, no longer play for the Raiders, so it’s a waste of money. Players I thought that would be on the team for awhile Like TE Miller and a couple of others. My Son has 3 Raiders jersey’s hanging in his closet of players that are no longer on the team and he don’t wear them, two are authentic jersey’s to boot.

You want to be safe about a jersey? Buy a throw back players jersey.

Our OC is a heavy run type of guy.

Doubt DMC will be touched. But i don’t think Reggie would give up bush either. Bush can play every down where DMC can’t. But the draft is where players like DMC maybe gone, His injury has caused us a fortune of games and the game where we have a chance to play in a potential playoff game he doesn’t play? Jacoby did, and so did Moore. Too me imo, i would believe we can turn any RB into a star with our line. Dmac is exceptional but w/o him, i think we can get a player out of college with explosiveness as well. If Dmac stays then i’ll be happy as well. Either way im fine, just matters who we get for him. If not we still have one of the best RB’s in the league.

this is what most GMs league-wide would do, and would've done all along

I think finally you can say we’re not a team that is always bucking the system with a move. Then, Al was always trying to be the genius and see things no one did. He was still occasionally right in the end, but the head scratchers got even more puzzling, and it was more miss than hit. I still miss him, but look forward to going down this new road.

Darren’s a stud, and love it if we could keep him forever, but in the business league that it is, you have to believe McKenzie will act as many other GMs would when you have a guy who is healthy for half the games in the season. It sucks, but it’s a reality.

Great, I Liked Routt

While he once again held opponents to a low completion percentage (47.4 percent) and allowed less than 6 yards per pass attempt for the season, according to STATS, Routt was credited with allowing eight touchdown passes — tied for the second-most in the NFL - and led the league with 17 penalties committed, according to STATS. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d826d1780/article/routt-released-by-raiders-one-season-into-threeyear-contract?module=HP11_MYNFL

It could have easily been fixed with a defensive minded coach which we have. Routt has the size and natural ability to shut down WR’s. His aggression and that was his biggest downfall, those P.I’s are bs, and if you watched you can clearly see fighting for position but but we get called for it. Because he is so aggressive, refs tend to look at him more and won’t be hesitate to see any pulling by him. I hope he gets resigned, he just needs tweaks thats all, but after only one year? and cut? Give the guy a chance. Now we are fucked at the CB position. And don’t expect huff to be #1 because then that will be even worse.

I'm so sick and tired of the "THOSE PI FLAGS WE BS" argument

The reason Routt drew so many flags is because he has horrible technique and always throws his arm over the shoulder or gets beat and ends up grabbing the receiver. Thank god I don’t have to watch people make excuses for his poor play any more.

This is a sign that Huff is moving to corner

RM and Dennis must have thier eyes on one of the top FA’s to go along with Huff.

WOW

Reggie ain’t fucking around.

Don’t really agree with the move personally from what I can gather it only saved us $1.25 million this season anyway as his cap hit is still $5million but I will reserve definitive judgement when I see the plan unfold in its entirety.

It's worth keeping an eye on

As long as this move isn’t the start of a true salary dump, but is just the start of a true restructuring and rebuilding of the defense, it can work out. If it’s the start of a salary dump, we could be in for a rough transition.

I read someplace

That the 5 million salary was only against the cap if he made the squad according to his contract. The other 5 million was a bonus due tomorrow if he was still on the team. I’m thinking we saved quite a bit in cap money on this guy. I’ve read so much about this in the last couple hours my brain is going into overload, thats what I get for not going to Thirsty Thursday.

seems like a good hire. hopefully he can help coach up roro

Read the tea leaves fellas....

Why keep and continue to pay for expensive niche players when the whole salary cap system has been adjusted. Rookie minimums/ Veteran max. Now look at what we need. FS/SS, CB, OL, LB. Theres alot of FA talent at CB this year. Nixing Routt could of opened the cap to sign CB McFadden, CB Carr, CB Finnigan, FS Porter,CB Carlos Rogers, CB Ladarius Webb, SS Laron Landry, CB Brent Grimes or possibly even two at that money. You have to admit that any two of the above is better than one CB Routt at that amount of money. Now dump DT Henderson and pick up DT Solani from the Dolphins. On O-line we can make offers to T Ryan Harris, T Joe Staley, G Ben Grubbs, G Deuce Lutui, and C Matt Birk. Heck, throw LB Curry or LB Wimbleys money at Super Mario. Money well spent.

correct. might be hard to recognize us pretty soon, but that might be a good thing and a necessary thing to make it work

make no mistake. The new regime will start off right—with a new team, one that our new coaches and staffers have settled upon.

Gonna be tough to be patient and endure it all, and a bit sad on many levels, but all in all, it’s a welcome change that’s been a long time coming in Oakland. RIP Al. I can sense a lot of rolling in the grave in the near and distant future!

Cap hit for routt is 2.2 mill check your guys shit.
DT John Henderson is due $4 million base salary in 2012. Prime candidate to be released. No way Raiders paying that much.

Free safety Michael Huff is due $4 million base salary in 2012, as well as $4 million roster bonus in mid-March.

Linebacker Rolando McClain’s base salary for 2012 is only $970,000. DT Richard Seymour is due $15 million, of which $7.5 million guaranteed.

LB Kamerion Wimbley set to earn $11 million in base salary in 2012. Guaranteed most of that amount. Might be targeted for restructured deal.

Other players at risk of being cut by Raiders: DT Tommy Kelly ($6 million), CB Chris Johnson ($3.5M) and G Cooper Carlisle ($3M).

There’s more, this is funny: They still owe him a fully guaranteed $5 mil roster bonus left over from the March 2011 deal.
My understanding is the Raiders will not pursue signing Routt. So time for the younger CBs to compete for more playing time.

I'm not too familiar with him

But the few times I’ve watched him play he’s always come off like a major hot-head. And if that’s the case then I don’t think we need him on the team.

Not at all. He's a solid corner who'd thrive in the right situations

nothing taken from what he’s done in Tennessee. Huge heart. No one can fault him for the situation against Andre Johnson. That was some physical football by both sides, and they got heated. No more, no less.

Horrible move that does not bode well for our future

By cutting the one decent corner we had without having a surefire replacement was a bold, and stupid, move. If we are unable to acquire a top prospect for corner we are looking at CJ (assuming his is retained) and DVD or Chekwa all three of which should be, at best, third or fourth stingers. This could be the start of a complete overhaul that is going to take several more years or losing season before this is corrected. Effing RETARDED!

I wouldn't rush to call it stupid before we've had a chance to see how this all plays out

It’s not like our secondary was good this past season. Only the Vikings gave up more passing TDs than we did, so it’s not like we can get that much worse. At the very least releasing Routt might make it easier for us to shop around for good FAs.

Guys relax. This is the start of the first quarter in the offseason game.

We saved money because Reg found a loophole in the Davis contract. Now he’s going to see if he can undo some of Al’s other mistakes and also keeping Al’s good picks. (Branch, and Bush) Then will add some of his own ( Landry, and Cortland) Then allow Allen to coach up a good defense.

by raiderfan21 on Feb 9, 2012 11:25 PM PST via mobile reply actions

I don't agree with the last part and even if he was our best that's not saying much.

That’s like being the smartest kid on the short bus with the way our corners covered and tackled. His contract is what did him in mainly but I’m sure the penalties had a hand in it along with the new defensive philsophy not wanting to make man to man coverage a priority.

Stanford was our best corner last year and definitely had some trade value

Thing is

People have been throwing out names to replace Routt, etc. but it’s not like these people are just on the shelf at Walmart waiting to get bought. IF their respective teams let them go, it will still be a bidding war for their services if they’re any good. And if they come cheap we can expect to get what we paid for.
