Raiders Release Routt

WTF was my initial reaction. Not even a trade. Just released. I will look for a link but this is not good unless they are going to bring in a couple shut down corners. I got this from The Oakland Raiders Facebook page. This might be the start of a whole new defense with all new players. Who is next? Seymore? McClain? Was this a cost cutting move or the start of something good?. What is your guys reaction?

It is not a good move

Anger at players creates dumb thinking, so many peopel happy about it, what we had to do was re-structure, maybe he refused that is my only guess. Or maybe we will try to sign him for cheaper after Friday, who knows…..but he was a pretty good corner when used the right way, Suck Chuck didnt use him well….he was top 5 in burn pct the 2010 season too

by RaiderPride20 on Feb 9, 2012 3:07 PM PST reply actions

That's because Nnamdi was the number one
he was top 5 in burn pct the 2010 season too

Routt is not a number one corner… he’s a decent number two being paid number one money and he was due his $5 million salary if he was one the roster as of today.

It’s a new era of getting paid for what your worth and Routt simply wasn’t worth number one money and probably wouldn’t restructure…so he’s gone.

Up next … Kam Wimbley, then Huff, Seymour, Kelly, McClain and anybody else who isn’t playing up to their contract…. Time to do what’s right for the team boys! or get out and we’ ll find somebody who will.

"Now I know what your thinking, did he fire six shots or only five. Ive forgotten myself in all this excitement, but being that this is the 44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and could blow your head clean off, you have to ask your question. Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk!"

He was due a bonus

so maybe they will keep him. Maybe they just released him to get them out of a bad contract and not pay the bonus like what the packers did with AJ Hawk last year. IMO they need two solid CBs. So its either Routt plus one more solid CB or two new CBs through free agency or trade but there are no draft picks to trade. If they wanted to get rid of Routt why not just trade him? The only thing I can think of is so they wouldnt have to pay an upcoming roster bonus

by dawad34 on Feb 9, 2012 3:11 PM PST reply actions

Maybe after Allen started watching film of Routt, he made a decision.

Allen is a defensive minded coach and I think he, McKenzie and Tarver are starting to evaluate certain players and also certain salaries, and as stated, bonuses.
Routt may just be in the wrong place at the wrong time…or….after he is just not what they want in a DB.

Wimbley's contract is 29 million guaranteed

And at this point we’ve only paid $5 mil. That’s a huge cap hit for someone not on the roster, IMO.

Holy Crap 29 Million!!!!

Wimbley should redo his contract, but release him? Hell no, he is a beast pass rusher. As for Richard Seymour? We have matt shaugnessy, so if he is cut then we have a replacement. Probably not as good as RS but he is on the rise.

He was not much of a beast this year

but cutting him has to be a last resort.

this why I came here

I’m really curious how raiders fans would react to this… as an outsider, I don’t like this move because I think it sends a message to other players that the team isn’t true to its contracts, I understand that this is a davis move that they are getting rid of. But again as an outsider who doesn’t know as much of your team, what do I know.

by JetMet on Feb 9, 2012 4:27 PM PST reply actions

i think it sends a message of were not here to mess around

either you buy into the team and play your ass off or your gone. they want to build a winner but they cant do that without any cap room and a bunch of bloated contracts. so some guys may feel they are not being true to the contracts but those guys will prob be cut. Im sure they want more guys that feel like i will do do anything to make the team better. Restructuring contracts usually pay the same amount just in a different fashion and over different periods of time. So this is def intresting and the new few weeks will tell us a lot of what direction the team will be going heading into FA and the draft

by dawad34 on Feb 9, 2012 4:41 PM PST up reply actions

oh so did Routt not play well last year?

Im asking this seriously? … I really am not sure as being a jet fan. Does the team have a different player that can fill in at CB?

by JetMet on Feb 9, 2012 4:44 PM PST up reply actions

he was pretty solid in coverage

except he had a lot of PI and illegal contact penalties. Most people think its cuz he was frustrated from the defensive meltdowns. He and seymore showed it more than anyone else IMO

by dawad34 on Feb 9, 2012 6:09 PM PST up reply actions

gotcha... thanks for the info

he kinda sounds like cromartie, every jet game it seemed like you were expecting a call or two on him.

by JetMet on Feb 9, 2012 8:32 PM PST up reply actions

Penalties

He had the most in the NFL at 17 for holding, pass interferance, illegal hands and a personal foul. Almost the same amount as the entire Packers Defense. To much money for a person that didn’t live up to expectations.

"Committed To Excellence" Mostly just "Committed" though

by GoldCityRaider on Feb 9, 2012 6:29 PM PST up reply actions

thanks for the info

Cromartie from the jets seems to have problems with that too

by JetMet on Feb 9, 2012 8:33 PM PST up reply actions

Ok.

W/o Routt, were are definitely worse in the secondary. Yes we were bad last year, but as a stand point now we are wose. If you are a Raider fan and think that Dvd & Chekwa can start at 1 & 2 then you don’t know football. Honestly, you can see the struggle but that is what rookies do, and to not having playing time in they’re 1st year, and with a new coach, that still makes them rookies. A fresh slate without there best veteran. In a way it helps us with $$$ and space, but this actually leaves all our options in the FA. We need a star CB to take on the #1 WR. Now we are left with 2 rookies, a old veteran, and a FS converting to CB.

5 yrs 54mil and underacheived , huff maybe next , we got no picks , we need cap room to get what we need in free agencey , secondary needs an overhaul and so does our cap

wimbley is safe , but if were movin toward a 3/4 they may move some d line salary though well have too many 3/4 end types and no nose tackle , seymour or kelly could be on the block , to make room for someone like garay

by aa420 on Feb 9, 2012 8:18 PM PST reply actions

Huff wasn't playing in his position

Chuck is an idiot and decides to put him as a CB. At FS he ends up saving us from the texans. From then on injury plagued this year but honestly Huff is a ballhawk, just let him play where he needs to play then the numbers will show.

A number of reasons but one major one is that he was a first round pick...

He hasnt lived up to a 1st round status…and he was also an Art Shell pick. Shell talked Davis out of taking Matt Leinart at 7 then, who may have been a good fit in Oakland instead of a shitbird in Arizona.

1st round picks period are overrated.

you make like every 1st rounder is destined to succeed. The guy is good nuff said. Salary cap is another thing but to blame him on production? Cmon, we all know he got skills.

Theyre paying him too much.

He was, for me, a disappointment, and I wouldnt care where he was taken in the draft. Skills yea, but not #1 skills.
I make like every first rounder is destined to succeed? Dont know where I said that. I mentioned it as a possible reason people may not like him. He was taken at #7 and I dont think that wad a good pick.
So, what can you make up what I said now?

"He hasnt lived up to a 1st round status"

hmm? 7th in the first round? Wasn’t he our 1st rounder? Im not saying the 1st pick of the draft. By saying he hasn’t lived up to 1st round status? What the hell does that mean? It sounds as if your saying 1st rounders are far more talented then anyone after that. All it means that they are really talented in college, but it doesn’t mean there isn’t farves, or tom brady’s in the draft group who get picked after. You put the " 1st rounders " on a pedestal by saying 1st round status? What status?

Why are you angry?

It must have really gotten to you. Btw maybe you should learn how to read and understand "You put the " 1st rounders " on a pedestal by saying 1st round status." MY POINT is about how you said in the earlier post about " He hasnt lived up to a 1st round status. " You said that? or you didn’t? So He, means your talking about Routt right? And your comparing him to not living up to a first round status ( Meaning your putting these 1st rounders on a pedestal by saying there is some kind of talent they should be at.) Don’t get all butt hurt about it, the one who can’t talk like adults and saying names is usually the person who can’t talk period, and that’s what you call a twelve year old. Ohh wait i’m not talking about you though, because i didn’t mention your name.

He's not hated

just overpaid!
The guy has never become the player he was drafted to be and the only team in the NFL that would give him as much as he got is the Raiders of yesteryear.

Those days are over and if you’re not performing up to your contract you either restructure or get out.

It might cost us some losses in the short term, but we’ll be the better for it in the long run.

People need to stop looking at it emotionally and look at it from a business standpoint, as McKenzie and company are

it’s what needs to be done, and unfortunately, some guys contracts will find them unwilling to accept what we will have to offer going forward. Sometimes, it will simply be a matter of said guy not fitting into where we’re headed. Take a step back, take a breather, wait for it all to happen, and if at that point you’re still upset, then go with it. Until then, games have yet to be won or lost over this or any move that has happened this offseason.

I voted, new D… not necessarily all new players, but it might as well be, because it will be a whole new team. Like it or not, that’s how it has to be to succeed going forward, and McKenzie is fully aware of it.

it's a trip having honesty and straightforwardness from a man in the GM position for a change for sure

but yeah, I think we can expect that to be the norm from him. He said that we’d resemble most of the other teams in the league in those aspects.

Woodson was a tough one, and incidentally he matured after leaving. Pretty excited for the new environment. Can’t believe another draft is already around the corner.

before routt was on the team were getting penalized so releasing him for being a physical corner is skeptical. whos gonna replace him?

beig paid to have holding calls is unheard of. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

the money we spent on routt, should have gone towards keeping namdi. it still boggles the mind why we let a good player go

You mean Nnamdi as the "good player" in the statement right?

another few million a year to Nnamdi and let Routt go last year… at least we’d have a better corner and one that can make a TD saving tackle against the run!

Great Move!

Routt was garbage. I held my breath every time the ball was thrown his way. Several holding calls and for some reason he just couldn’t figure out how to turn around and play the ball….bye bye Routt!!

so with routt gone who would you guys want to see as our starting cb's next year

I personally dont think huff will be one. He is either going to be a safety or gone. With him making 8 mil a year it looks like he will be gone

by dawad34 on Feb 10, 2012 10:22 PM PST reply actions

Routt was mediocre at best

Never saw another back of a jersey more on TD celebrations. PPL think he’s alright because he was fast and almost made some plays. But never materialised into a #1 DB. Too expensive to keep. Peace out stanford, Good luck elsewhere, hopefully in the AFC

by qwazilla on Feb 14, 2012 5:34 AM PST reply actions

word is that the chiefs are making a strong push to get him

good news is if they sign him they will be out of the carr sweepstakes

by dawad34 on Feb 14, 2012 11:30 AM PST up reply actions

Raiders have no starting corners

He is one of the best corners in the league. Also, the second fastest. He played for years for peanuts. What nobody realizes is that he can play WR just as good or better. This was his first year as the #1 corner and I don’t think you can get a better corner in free agency and definitely not in the draft. He didn’t cover as good as Namdi but he did tackle and hit better. He did not play like a $10m corner is the problem and the GM is making Salary Cap moves.

The Raiders have a very big problem now that they do not have any starting corners in a scheme that plays man, very hard to do. CJ was MIA last season. Routt will do good where ever he goes. Hopefully he gets a coach that lets him play a little WR too.
