The NFL's 77th Annual Draft takes place Thursday-Saturday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The Raiders aren't set to make a pick until the end of the third round but how the draft shakes out will affect them greatly.
And although it seems unlikely, it is possible the Raiders could trade into one of the first two rounds. But at the moment, it appears they are set to be spectators for the first day and most of the second day as well.
Here are the draft days and times:
Round 1 - Thursday at 5 p.m. (PT)·
Rounds 2-3 - Friday at 4 p.m. (PT)·
Rounds 4-7 - Saturday at 9 a.m. (PT)
Here is the breakdown of the Raiders' picks in this draft:
Round 3 - 95th overall (Compensatory)·
Round 4 - 129th overall (Compensatory)·
Round 5 - 148th overall
Round 5 - 168th overall (Compensatory)·
Round 6 - 189th overall
There are a lot of reasons the Raiders have these picks. Three of their five draft slots are compensatory picks. Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.
The compensatory picks are positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. The Raiders were the only team to be awarded a round three compensatory pick in the draft at 95th overall.
Here are the free agents the Raiders lost and signed to receive these picks:
Lost: Nnamdi Asomugha (PHI), Robert Gallery (SEA), Bruce Gradkowski (CIN), Zach Miller (SEA), Thomas Howard (CIN).
Signed: Kevin Boss, Stephon Heyer
The Raiders traded away all but their round three, five and six picks in this draft. Here is the breakdown of where all the Raiders' 2012 draft picks went:
Round 1 (17th overall): QB Carson Palmer-Part of trade with Bengals during last season.
Round 2 (48th overall): OT Joe Barksdale - 2011 third-round selection from Patriots and RB Taiwan Jones - 2011 fourth-round selection from Patriots.
Round 3: QB Terrelle Pryor - 2011 Supplemental draft pick
Round 4 (109th overall): QB Jason Campbell - from Redskins before 2011 season.
Round 7 (225th overall): LB Aaron Curry - from Seahawks during 2011 season.
