Former Houston Texans quarterback Matt Leinart has been on a collision course with the Raiders for a while. Now it appears that collision will be happening very soon as he will visit the Raiders to work out for the team next week. This was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The in-lines for Leinart and the Raiders are many. Most recently his QB coach in Houston last season was Greg Knapp-Raiders new offensive coordinator. He worked out with Raiders' starting quarterback, Carson Palmer, in Los Angeles last month. He backed up Palmer at USC and took over the starting job when Palmer left as the top pick in the NFL draft.
He would once again back up Palmer in Oakland should he sign, and all indications are that he will.
Though Leinart's career numbers are similar to former backup Kyle Boller, he is seen as an upgrade over Boller as the Raiders' backup quarterback. The team needs a veteran presence in the number two quarterback role.
The team currently has a total of three quarterbacks on the roster in Palmer, Rhett Bomar, and Terrelle Pryor. Teams typically head into camp with at least four quarterbacks.
