How concerned should you be…

After our first preseason game I’d like to get a sense of just how concerned the Raider Nation is with our future after our lackluster performance on Monday night against the Dallas Cowgirls.

Keep in mind that this was the first preseason game, with a new GM, a new HC (and most coaching staff) and new O scheme and a new D scheme. Along with those offsetting factors applying to your evaluation, please remember also that there were a number of starters and some hopefuls that were held out due to injury as well.

With that being said ill get it started here..

1st team O. Promising but concerning. I thought the O line held initially until the sack. I like…no I LOVED the new zone blocking scheme and I definitely see that it favors McFadden and the running game if the RBs can be patient, make a good read on the gap and exercise self control and stick to the 1 cut and up philosophy. The sky is the limit (injury permitting of course). Palmer-looked good until he threw a bomb to our shortest receiver in double coverage without looking off the safety. That was a mistake that a veteran should not have made and it makes me wonder about his judgment. I do appreciate that he has a short memory and is able to shrug those off and return without shaken confidence. Ford-big letdown. Dropped balls delivered on the numbers are unacceptable in any venue. I don’t care that it was preseason, not acceptable.

1st team D. Very pleased with the progress. The interior is going to be a force to be reckoned with this year. McClain made some good plays and seemed to look like he knew what he was doing. He is playing with intensity and actually had some hustle. I was not impressed with the CB play. Bringing in the veteran guys was supposed to improve our play there and I think I was just expecting a little more from them. While we stopped the run effectively and that was a concern from last year, I now fear that we may be getting burned frequently on the outside. In a passing league and with the Denver Manning’s in our division that is not comforting. Although the looks were mostly 4-3 generic, I liked the new pressure and saw some good DB blitz schemes and I like that the guys are in better position to make plays. We just need the guys to make the plays..

Special teams- what can I say. You can definitely tell when lechler is missing. Overall I thought King did a great job. That’s all I have to say on that.

2nd & 3rd team O- Leinart played well I thought. He was a little conservative and had a decent completion %. Most importantly he had no turnovers. I feel comfortable with him as the #2. Streater had a great day and it was good to see one bright spot in this otherwise bland showing. I would have liked to see Criner get a few more balls thrown his way as he seemed all but absent. It was almost as if Leinart was favoring Streater. 2 and 3 line was just that, a 2-3 string line. Miller did a decent job I thought, and showed that he is durable and moves the pile ok. Pryor lived up to my expectations for someone who has not played a real snap in over a year. He is elusive and shows athleticism, but needs work on decision making. Overall I don’t think his accuracy was too off target for where his should be. I did like him manhandling a linebacker and essentially throwing him to the ground with one hand, which made me laugh and got a rewind and review out of me. I did not like the pouting and him putting himself down so much after the game. Mental toughness is another area where he needs growth. In this league you need a short memory as a QB and resilience will not be obtained if you are constantly throwing a pity party for yourself and stay stuck in the moment.

2nd & 3rd D- not too impressed. Mostly of note DVD was a bit of a letdown. I saw him making the same mistakes as last year not looking for the ball a few times and flailing instead of turning to make a play on it. Ill chalk that up to game jitters and old habits resurfacing under pressure. I think he is developing. The PI flag was unacceptable. I thought it came out of frustration as there were some pretty intense hand battles going on in the few preceding plays. He was clearly frustrated prior to committing the foul. This brings me to my most promising note…

The penalty reduction was phenomenal. Every flag that was thrown had me holding my breath. I was repeatedly given relief from my anxiety as the Cowgirls were undisciplined. That prompted me to do some digging and here is what I compiled after preseason week 1 from NFL.com for penalty statistics throughout the league.

As you can see we ranked 12th overall in total Yards and number of penalties. That is a HUGE turnaround IMO, and I think the guys seem to be getting the message that DA is preaching. Now you might say “its preseason” or there were replacement reffs..To that I say yeah, it might have been preseason, but if there were an abundance of bonehead penalties in preseason I would be worried. I saw discipline and guys playing smart. As DA said “these games don’t count but they do matter”. What you set as the foundation in preseason will carry over. To me, that is the best stat we could have improved on.

So Raider fans, let’s hear your assessment/concerns/hopes for the year(s) to come.
