Half of the preseason is behind us, and so far we've seen the first team offense struggling. Part of this can be attributed to Palmer throwing a pair of interceptions to end two promising drives. While there are obviously other important factors, such as dropped balls, play calling, and simply being unused to a new offensive system, the play of the quarterback is definitely one of the most important parts of the offense's ability to execute.
On the other hand, the second team offense lead by Matt Leinart has looked pretty decent, and with fewer weapons. Of course, the argument will be made that they're facing second string defenses, and that's the reason that Leinart looks impressive. On the other hand, Leinart has moved the ball without the benefit of McFadden or many of the other great players we have in the starting lineup.
Because of the way the first team under Palmer has been struggling and the way the second team has been looking with Leinart, I'm of the opinion that we should have him get some time with the first string offense and maybe even start against the Seahawks in two weeks. If nothing else it would give the starters some time with Leinart in the event of Palmer having to miss a game or two.
Now I'm not suggesting that Leinart should get the job or that trading for Palmer was a mistake, but I feel that he's played well enough to get a shot at earning the job if he is in fact capable.
