As I usually do during Raiders games, I scroll through the game thread on my iPad while watching the game. The theme of the comments were either "lynch offensive coordinator Greg Knapp", "Same old Raiders", or "Wow we suck". These comments are quite ignorant. I'll explain why after the jump.
Even though the offense did not put up as many points as we would hope, there are so many factors to consider. First of all, Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore were both inactive. Both add a dimension to this offense that Streater, Hagan, or Criner cannot replace. Everyone was wishing for the Raiders to air it out deep. It's very difficult to do that when you don't have the personnel or the time in the pocket. It's not Greg Knapp's fault that the offense is still adjusting to his offense. This will take many in game reps. The same thing happened to the Saints with Steve Spagnoulo's defense. They got torched because the defense is still adjusting. Remember, the Raiders actually matched the Chargers in total yardage for the most part.
Another comment I often saw was "Same old Raiders". This is not the same old teams from 2004-2009 that would win anywhere from 3 to 5 games and be competitive in less than half of them. This team will be competitive, that is easy to see. McFadden is a beast, Palmer is an above average QB, and when fully healthy they have weapons at receiver. Defensively, they proved they were solid tonight. The score doesn't tell the full story. They forced the Chargers to settle for FG's multiple times where the "old Raiders" would have let them walk in. Special Teams was awful but as long as Condo comes back that will be fine.
Also, I ask you guys to please stop being so reactionary. Right now everyone is depressed, thinking there is a 6-10 season on the horizon. If we had won, everyone would be thinking there is a 10-6 season on the horizon. I got news for you. One game hardly matters. It sucks to lose to a division foe; however, it's going to be very interesting to see how this team reacts next week in Miami. That's the beauty of football. As bad as one day may be, the next week can pick you up just as fast.
In summation, put away your pitchforks and torches for now. Give this team some time. Unlike last year, this team will play its best football towards the end of the year when they get used to the system in place. Win, lose, or tie we are Raiders 'till we die!
