Oakland Raiders starting middle linebacker, Rolando McClain, missed practice on Wednesday. He suffered a concussion against the Dolphins last week and will have to undergo a series of tests throughout the week before he is cleared to play in the team's week three home game against the Steelers on Sunday. He is also still having some issues with the ankle injury he suffered in the opener.
Last week long snapper Jon Condo went through the same series of tests leading up to the game in Miami. He cleared tests from doctors each day up to the day of the game when he was finally cleared to play. The Raiders signed free agent long snapper, Nick Guess, in case Condo was unable to go. In the end, Condo was cleared, Guess was inactive for the game, and then released the following day.
If McClain can't go, it is less likely the team would sign an insurance player. Travis Goethel is the backup middle linebacker and he would be spelled by one of the others in that case.
As inconsistent as McClain has been for this team, he remains the best option at the middle linebacker spot. Last season, while he was injured, the team started Darryl Blackstock instead and the drop off was significant. Then again, Blackstock is now back in the UFL so that may have been it too.
Cornerback, Coye Francies also missed practice with a concussion.
