It appears that with the signing of Andre Carter, people are thinking 3-4 now. I don't know why exactly.
The one time Carter was in a 3-4 he didn't produce anything. the Redskins were playing 4-3 for much of his career, and he produced, but the one time they switched, he didn't do anything.
But then we have the notion that Curry will be back. This also, seems to have people riled up about the 3-4. I am here to say, that I don't think it will be our base defense.
Just to toy around with the idea, I would like, if we WERE to run a 3-4, our LBs to be (from right to left): Burris, Wheeler, McClain, Curry. With Wheeler's ability against the pass, and his instincts and vision, he should prove valuable in the middle, while we can use some blitz packages for Burris and Curry.
However, I still believe that Curry coming back will not have us switch to 3-4 just like that. imo I just believe that Curry would more than likely play a role in the defense. Lets face it, McClain and Wheeler are starters. So that only leaves Burris. I think that DA will have Burris and Curry switch off at the LB position (and if wheeler needs any rest, switch with him too), and at some points have Burris or Curry play 4-3 End on passing downs. Have Andre Carter be on the other side, and put Houston in to replace either Seymour or Kelly at the Tackle position.
There will be some for of rotation going on, and DA always stressed about versatility. Once Curry gets back, I expect even more versatility to commence.
Another reason though to not expect 3-4, is because I do not feel that we have had any extended practices in the 3-4 enough to make it our base. I already seen some 3-4 alignments against Pitt, but to make it our base already in the regular season will probably be unwise.
No doubt however, that DA will still play some 3-4, 4-2-5s, 3-3-5, etc. We are a multiple defense, and perhaps we should be more patient and think more realistically before we just jump on a base formation because we like to see that change. Not yet folks, lets just have the players play in a defense they are more familiar with now. :)
