Next week we go Philly with a real chance to be at. 500 at the midway point of the season. TP has already ready reached that point being 3-3. I'll take .500 for the midway point of Kafkaesque season like this. With backups of backups anchoring the line and a Velcro RB and a Ford that's healthy enough to fumble.
I will also take a Raider setting an NFL record within his first ten games. Especially if the margin of victory is less than 7points and the record involves tds. Good start since a lot of good names didn't get there first. That should be obvious to all of us but some of us have been playing with dolls the last 10 years, perhaps out of boredom with losing or the advent of Madden.
When I was a kid, the rookie QB was platooned on the bench while the geriatric kicker backed up the Mad Bomber. Talk about Kafkaesque! And the margin of victory was many times by a FG that Blanda would kick after leading the drive. These wins were ugly. There's a reason more teams didn't pick up on this method of QB rotation. And it was from that era that we embraced the notion of "just win baby". It ain't a beauty contest, it's a football game and its ugly.
There are multiple goals at play for RM and DA. They have to pursue a course that accomplishes as many goals as possible.Focusing on defense at the expense of the O line is paying dividends. Everyone is looking bad as o lines fold around the league. Take a gander at the one in Philly next week. Our defense is taking advantage of that and we''re winning games. There's a price but 93 yard dives in 20 seconds keeps the O line fresh.
The coaches and management have put a competitive team together given the expectations. Tied with the Jags, really? Miscues? Sure, but only within the context of certain goals and not the overall plan. The Ford-Olson issue that came up this week is an example. Taking out the discussion of health, you're left with Olson not wanting Ford on the field.Seems about right. Now, reinserting health allows for either a trade or cut or return after a suitable time in purgatory. Great,win.win.
Even after shooting craps with the Buffalo backup,we ride into Philly with a shot at. 500 midway through the season. And while I didn't like the trade, I understand it. Just like the Wilson pick. Because this isn't Madden. This isn't dolls. Real players, a real team, real coaches.
Confidence has been hard to come by in recent years. The direction of this team is positive. Given the changes in personnel on D, it's truly amazing how good they are. DJ and Sio are coming along and we are light years away from Bres and Ryan. By the end of the year there's a good chance we will have answered many of the questions regarding our future. But more importantly, we will have done it while remaining competitive.
I have many concerns as a fan but they are not like the ones in past years. I'm not wild about DMC right now but it's a big decision for the team despite what fans think. Because they're not dolls, they're players. And there's a reason why Barnes keeps hanging around years after some called for his head (I was one of them) .Same with TP. Now that he's in, we move to winning the game as the focus for fans. This Debbie Downer shit needs to stop. Minor criticisms about the game is one thing but when we question the significance of a record setting performance after a win, its time to put down the dolls, put down the pad and act like a damn fan. Its chess not checkers.
