This is not a post about whether or not McGloin is our starting QB, nor is it a post about which QB we need to draft or look at. This is a post about the expectations when drafting a QB.
Most fanbases, when looking to see about drafting a QB in the first round, tend to think that the QB would be very good, or be the missing piece the offense needs.
Do fans here think that drafting a QB would make a difference for this team in the first round? Maybe those who don't like the QBs currently on the roster sure, but.......
I'm looking at the teams who draft a QB in the first round, and unless that QB is drafted in the top 10, normally that QB doesn't end up working out. We think drafting a QB will end our worries, but what are the chances we get a franchise guy in the top 20? I don't think they are good.
On the other side, I remember a post from a Jet fan who looked at QB drafted in the first 10-20 years in the NFL (this was about a season or two ago). The majority of franchise QBs are taken in the 1st round. A heavy majority actually.
So do we draft a QB in next year's draft in the first round? Well if you think there is a franchise QB sure, but I am personally so hesitant because the chances of getting that franchise guy who ends up no more than an average QB are high, and it's risky.
Do we see what we have in Tyler Wilson? McGloin? I'd like to see how this season plays out, for if we are to make the decision of drafting a QB in the first round, that is a BIG decision to make. It's one that can put the franchise into the playoffs, or set the franchise back. How can it set the franchise back? Because you are INVESTING in the QB to be good.
I personally would wait to see what Wilson and McGloin has to offer, and see how free agency plays out. For now, I think McGloin can be a good QB, and I think we need a #1 WR, OL, or Pass Rusher mostly. But who knows? By the end of the season I could change my mind, and would want a QB.
