Not getting into McGloin vs. Pryor as I don't think either is really franchise QB material. McGloin seems like the better piece moving forward, though. At worst, he's a very good backup which is something every team needs in the league.
Rather, I wanted to talk about how we can finally get our franchise QB.
With Bridgewater assuredly going #1 and the Raiders probably picking in the 5-8 range the only franchise QB we'll have a shot at is Mettenberger/Hundley/Carr/Bortles. And that's IF they fall past all the QB needy teams in the top 5. In fact, isn't it fair to say a big reason they're in the top 5 is because they need a QB? That just goes to show how important the position is. Personally, i want nothing to do with Carr or Bortles. To me, Mettenberger is the only other QB other than Bridgewater that'd i'd draft in the top 5, and while i like Hundley too, he probably needs to sit a year to get the nuances and speed of the game. Not that there's anything wrong with that... I just have a feeling people aren't going to be very receptive to the idea of waiting another 2-3 years to see something happen. Least of all Mark Davis.
Given that pass rush is another huge need and the draft is pretty well stocked in quality pass rushers, what if we were to take one in the first round (or whichever other position/player you want) and trade for a QB?
Specifically, i'm thinking Kirk Cousins. Captain Kirk was an excellent QB for Michigan State and absolutely tore up the senior bowl. He was far and away the best QB on the field, and that featured guys like Russel Wilson and Nick Foles. Somehow all these guys didn't get drafted until the 3rd round though, with Cousins lasting until the 4th. I remember screaming at my TV for RM to draft Kirk who was somehow still there and then watching him take Bergstrom (siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh).
With RG3 geting benched this week and probably for the rest of the season (millions of reasons floating around) Cousins is getting his chance to show what he can do. He's already shown quite a bit in the preseason and spot duty when they were collecting RG3's body parts off the field, but this will give a better chance to evaluate just how good he could be. If he checks out... i'd go hard for him. Much like the Chiefs spent a second round pick on Alex Smith, i would be more than willing to use one on Cousins. For the record i HATE the very idea of trading draft picks, but in this case you're looking at getting franchise QB and in this case, it's well worth it.
That's IF he shows he can do at the pro level what he did in college and at the senior bowl. But if he does, what do you think?
What route would Raider Nation prefer when it comes to getting a franchise QB?
