So for the last few weeks I have been reading the comments on just about every post that Levi does and all I see are the same arguments over and over. So I thought to myself instead of posting repeatedly on different threads we will just make one to clear up a few things that people are getting wrong out there.
Lets start with the argument that the players arent as bad as it looks and we should have won more games. Lets break this down and make it simple so people can understand it. Lets say the 32 teams are all contractors building houses on a block and the goal is to build the best house possible and everyone has the same amount to spend for materials. Now some of these people will get lucky and find great materials at a discount price thus making the house better than the neighbors and some will swing and miss and end up with substandard materials. Now lets look at the Raiders in this scenario. Not only do we have to get lucky and spend wisely we also have to do it with roughly 55% of the money that the other teams have. To use the house theory they get oak we get balsa wood. Yeah we put a team together with that cash and yeah they looked ok for a bit but the lack of cap space and depth have caught up to us.
Next lets look at the defensive play calling since people love to bring that up. Better yet lets look at the one everyone bitches at the "soft zone". I know we have some people on the blog that have played or still play football so they should know the purpose of the zone call. Basically your keeping everyone in front of you and you make the play after they catch the ball. Thats it easy right? They need 7 yards for a 1st down you set up the zone to have them sit down 4 yards deep and make the tackle after the catch. Dallas game they had witten set up perfectly on that 3rd down play to force the punt and the players wiffed. Titans game they had 8 in the zone and no one could tackle. Thats execution not scheme. If the play call forces the offense to throw short of the first down and has players in position to make the stop then the call worked as its supposed to its up to the players to make the stop. Now I know im going to get " stay man to man it was working" but people dont realize that man to man is where most of the big plays happen. Player gets beat and no help over the top easy TD. You run zone when you want to burn clock and trust your players to make the tackles and ours havent been.
Last point Ill make in this post the whole clock management thing and this is mostly due to the titans game and not stopping the clock on that last drive. So they are driving to try and win with no timeouts left and clock under a minute. They have to run no huddle and have a limited amount of plays they can call because of that. They also have to hope to get out of bounds on each play to stop the clock and maximize their chances to win and some people wanted us to stop the clock for them??? Sure that makes sense lets let them get a play in on 2-5 on our 40 with 55 sec remaining ( just an example). Better yet lets give them an extra 30 seconds to plan out a play to beat us with. Now the argument that we should have saved time if they did score so we could try and come back sounds great after the game has ended but forcing another team to run a hurry up with minimal time left and no way to stop the clock is usually how mistakes happen. Look at the lions last night. Hardly any time need a score and stafford forces it and a pick. Lets face it at least for the titans game if the clock ran out it would have been a great move but they scored so it looks like a dumb decision. Now before I get blasted the only point im making here is that hindsight is 20/20. Has there been clock missmanagement hell yeah. But people like to throw this example out there as an example and truth be told would rather force them to score with the clock running down then try to drive 40+ yards with no timeouts (would have had to burn them all to save any amount of time) in less than a minute to get into field goal range and then hope jano wasnt on the left hash mark and could hit the kick.
Now for the positives. Remember guys we have a full cap next year for the first time in god knows how long. High draft pick and 65 mil plus to spend sounds great for our future but we have holes to fill. Now is DA the guy to give all the toys to?? Hell I dont know. I do know that if your going to tear it down again now is a good time since the new coach would be able to get his players in free agency and draft but everyone that says dump DA remember your also dumping the other coaches most likely. Yeah they might be retained but it Gruden ( just thowing a name out there ) came in you can bet he would want his guys in OC and DC and they would want their guys as position coaches so there would be no guarantee of keeping any coach. Still dont know what to do with DA but im sure MD and RM will do what they believe is in the best interest of the team after the season is over. GO RAIDERS
