Nnamdi Asomugha will announce his retirement from the NFL as an Oakland Raider

Doug Pensinger
There have been a handful of Raiders fans that have wanted the Raiders to bring back Free Agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha and now they will receive their wish. Sort of. Nnamdi is returning to Oakland where he said hello to the NFL for the first time but his purpose this time is to say goodbye. Nnamdi Asomugha is retiring from the league and he will announce it tomorrow as a Raider.

Friday December 27th, at 3:00pm PT Nnamdi will be at Raiders headquarters to officially announce his retirement from the NFL. At the age of 32 he will end his career after playing 11 years, most of which were with the Oakland Raiders after they drafted him with the 31st pick of the 2003 draft. He also played 2 years with the Philadelphia Eagles and then part of this season with the San Francisco 49ers.

It is startling to see how quickly his career path changed after leaving the Raiders in free agency back in 2011. He signed a 5 year, $60M deal with the Eagles as one of the most sought after cornerbacks to ever hit the market but now less than 3 years later he is retiring.

He leaves the NFL with 3 Pro Bowls (2008-2010) and 2 first team All-Pro honors (2008, 2010). He had 15 interceptions and 80 passes defended in 143 career starts, 124 of which he started. His best years were in Oakland so it is the right thing for him to return home to announce his retirement.

Nnamdi will be joined at his retirement by fellow defensive back legends Willie Brown, Lester Hayes and Charles Woodson. It is only fitting that these three are there to celebrate the career of one of their fellow Raider greats in Mr. Asomugha. Also there will our very own Levi Damien to cover the event to remember.

Nnamdi was the very definition of a shut down corner as a Raider and one of the few bright spots in some very bleak years for the Silver and Black. Good luck and well wishes to him on his hopefully long and happy life after football.
