When I evaluate players and coaches in various sports, I try to break down different aspects of the game to see how I rate their performance or abilities. For instance when it comes to basketball I'd look at both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. A guy like Steve Nash would get very high marks for shooting and passing, but very low marks for his individual defense. When I look at Dennis Allen I try to remove our record the past two season and stay as objective as possible in evaluating him. My question is how would you rate Allen based on what you've seen and what you expect? There are several categories we can use but I'll just go with the first few that come to mind. Team Preparation: How confident are you in his game plan heading into a matchup? Discipline: Do the inmates run the asylum? And are their consequences across the board for selfish plays and stupid penalties that affect the team's success? Optimization: Does he put players in the best situations to succeed based on their abilities and weaknesses? Half time adjustments: When things don't go our way in the first half does he do a good job of changing the game plan to take advantage of what we've seen in the first half? Game Clock management: Does he know what he wants to do ahead of the result of a play or is he deciding what he wants to do after the play is finished while precious seconds tick off the clock. Does he know when to stop the clock on defense in order to get the ball back for the offense yet not give the other team time to get down field. Confidence: Does he look shell-shocked when he gets punched in the mouth or is he able to maintain his composure and lead his players by example. Leadership: Is he on the same level as the players, or do they respect and have reverence for him? No player would question Belichick, they'd just follow. But when you think you're smarter than the coach, there's a pause that happens when it comes to following his lead, which sometimes leads to mutiny. Responsibility: Does he just hire coaches and act like he's delegating responsibility or does he have his hand in everything making sure he get's maximum effort and efficiency at all times? How do you feel about Dennis Allen in these areas?
