The overwhelming complaints I hear week in and week out is Reggie Mckenzie's "lack" of talent evaluation,or his lack of "knowing" when a critical player goes down in a contact sport and why its "his"fault. I hear nay sayers, shit talkers, know-it-alls, "future" NFL Gm's on this very site act and pretend like once your granted access to the GM's office your ignited with the power to for see the future and potential that no one else can see. Why is it that a first and second round pick falter in regard to injuries(which can occur everyday, if anyone on here actually played football especially with grown ass men would know) we attack our GM and criticize his drafting, we bash and hate on the man that regardless of the bashing is still in charge, whether you give your stamp of approval or not. In this "article" I'd like to try and sway some of the negative nancy's that feed more skepticism than optimism. Please minimize if you can't handle the truth and face opinions in which you have no problem dishing out.
In 2012 Reggie Mckenzie was highly referenced from a lot of great football minds with a lot of football experience, more so than the 99.9% of us on this site I may add. In RM's first year he was so fortunate to not only be cap strapped with an aging Seymor, Palmer and overpaid Routt, Wimbley and Kelly but wasn't even allotted his first draft pick until the third round of the NFL draft in April. WIth his first pick RM selected Tony Bergstrom a massive OG that would be opposite from his one and only "big" free agent acquisition, Mike Briesel. In 2012 RM was openly admitting the task at hand and that it wasn't it a quick fix knew it would be a tough opening to possibly bigger turnaround for our beloved Franschise. RM brought in a young fiery coach(sound familiar) to kickstart to a new mindset in Dennis Allen. A first time head coach at any level(sound familiar) someone who ultimately demanded respect from every player in that locker room. Personally I'm a fan of what DA has done, he has made scrubs compete at a high level better than any team that has been fielded since 2002, but I digress ask Dr.H apparently hes got the qualifications on hiring a head coach in the NFL.So in our GM's first year we had injuries to pretty much every FA that was brought in to try and help this team compete with an underwhelming 4-12 record, the boo's came and they never stopped, fire DA they said, do it this way they said, blah blah blah right? But correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure Reggie didn't promise an AFC West title or Wildcard or even a winning season, he announced he would put 53 hard working football players together, and he did the best he could. But hey its sooo easy right, GM's have there crystal ball they know all and if they miss once they are to be hung and burned at the stake and lets start all over again! Yea, genius, again I digress, fast forward to 2013 shall we?!?
In 2013 the Oakland Raiders weren't much better off in terms of cap space and/or draft picks with our 2nd round pick going to Cinci for a QB thats no longer on our roster, but hey thats RM's fault right? Anyways moving on we got a first round pick ,3rd overall, the possibilities are endless! Rm's going to draft the next best player of all time who will never get hurt and will instantly be dubbed the GOAT! Well thats what we expected right? A perfect prospect that we can ride off into the sunset with right? Lets be honest the second we traded down to reacquire a second round pick we all knew we finally had the right guy in charge, someone who knew not just one player will change this franchise we needed cornerstones at every position on the field. DJ Hayden was RM's guy and I loved the safe secure solid pick that could possibly bolster much needed heart into the Raiders secondary. "Fuck DJ!" "wasted pick, again!" outraged raiders fans of course lost their minds when Hayden was not intercepting every pass and giving up receptions weekly! shame on you DJ shame on you! Then DJ was IR'd fans were outraged and cynical! But hey RM's a professional GM he should know if a player will be slated to be an IR candidate! OK this is sounding redundant right? Why would a GM draft a player if he knew it all, as far as talent and heart DJ was the perfect pick, overall talent no one honestly saw Star being the freak he was, (hence why he dropped...off topic), but we just expect for Reggie to know it all, right? Moving on we could talk Manelik Watson or we could talk Tyler Wilson we could talk every player imaginable and who we would pick and why was he drafted and all this but the forth coming truth about is, Reggie is a man, Reggie is only a man who has scouts and has gut feelings, not a crystal ball. And most of the time it works, its PHYSICALLY impossible to nail every player, bring in the next DPOY, rookie or MVP every year its a give take business, based solely on film and personality, not Madden ratings.
Look at what pieces of talent he's kept and brought in, Miles Burris,Nick Roach, Sio Moore, Andre Holmes, Mychal Rivera, Rod Streater, Marquette King, Rashard Jennings, Matt McGloin Resigned players like Condo, Jano and Marcel Reese, bringing in guys with as much talent as heart, guys the Oakland Raiders can be proud of, if that isn't Talent evaluation I don't know what is. Key pieces every franchise wants and needs. And yes you all can bash him for Flynn, or Briesel fuck people hate him for Jano now so why such high expectations, why do we all expect after a decade of failure a year of rebuild is its finally Super Bowl time!? Reggie promised to compete, promised to have players that will give us, as fans a reason to watch, and to be honest how hasn't he done that? in the 12 games the Raiders have played this season we've been in 10 of them, when I say in I mean leading or loss in the final seconds of play. I cant say thats even been remotely close in the last decade. A team filled with wash-ups and an outstanding amout of UDFA's at nearly every skill position. Instead of positivity and facts we rely on one spoiled trait, not good enough, RM needs to be fired! Really? why? please why!! As a man who's literally doing his job above and beyond why!? ok heres a task for every single one of you I want you to go to the store with 50 cents buy me a six-pack and Im talking Heineken, none of that Natty Ice bull shit! Go and I want to throw the best party in the world year after year with that 50 cents, do it and tell me how easy of a task that is. Do it for two full years with everyone at your party talking shit, and mocking your every move, get all the people that expect you to provide to do it and do it at the highest of level. In reality thats exactly what "fans" want they want instant rewards with the most amount of criticism and bitching as possible. This obviously goes hand in hand with the man he appointed to lead this crazy journey, he may be ugly and southern, he may rock a red pen and all black, but hes also a fighter and hes never laid down once he and Reggie have instilled a winning vibe back in Oakland, its only a matter of time until it it shows on the score card. While Reggie can't predict the future he can continue to grow with DA creating that environment that we all miss and loved prior to the last decade.
