Nation - I have long considered the absolute necessity of trading multiple times until we are out the first round all together, gaining valuable picks in the this deep defensive draft.
That being said, this is impossible to predict and is somewhat rare when impact players are needed right now as they are at DE, CB, LB and DT.
So, I decided to contemplate a mock draft where the Raiders stand pat with their picks and go 100 % on D. This is also very rare, but not as unlikely as all offense when our greatest needs on offense are at guard and RT in a power gap scheme. These are more easily obtained in FA.
Here we go: Oh, this is notwithstanding in reference to compensatory picks of which I see the Raiders getting two.
Round 1 - Dee Milliner, CB - Alabama
Round 3 - Kawann Short , DT - Purdue, Alternate - Sylvester Williams DT - NC
Round 4 - Chase Thomas - ILB - Stanford, Alternate Kwame Geahters (NT - Georgia)
Round 6 - Tyrann Mathieau - CB - LSU, Alternate - Kiko Alonso (ILB - Oregon)
Round 7 - Dontori Hughes - DT - Tennessee
Round 7 - Sanders Cummings - CB Georgia
My explanation for taking Milliner is this. Star is above average, but is not Haloti Ngata good.Plus this is a DL draft in terms of versatility and depth. This draft has one really good CB the area greatest need from a standpoint of lack of talent and the cost in FA to obtain a proven shut down corner. Milliner is excellent in run support as well.
As I believe we will need 2 DT's and 2 LB's I have us getting all positions filled via draft. We will likely have to play Joselio Hanson and Brandian Ross as starters. If Chekwa really wowed the coaches with his late season play - this will affect our draft.
Obviously by taking Milliner we do not get one of the pass rushing DE specialists, but there are plenty of good DE in FA, who we will go after (Freeny, Aviril, Bennett come to mind). Andre Carter and Matt Shaugnessy will be healthy to start the season as well. I know the Raiders are also high on the developing Jack Crawford.
One last note: I tend to undervalue picks rather than overvalue. Players never seem to go as high as they are hyped - except for QB's and DE's. So it may be we had to trade back, and or trade up to these players where I have them.
Enjoy!
