Geno Smith: Reggie's Backup Plan

Ah my beloved Raider Nation. How are you today? Have you been mulling the offseason as much as I have, sparing no amount of time to ponder the depths of our troubles, the solutions and above all the possibilities of courses of actions? Of course you have, what football fan has not beaten themselves over the head relentlessly in any offseason with speculation? Fear not, I am here to add to your thoughts and hopefully produce new perspectives and insight! Alright, let's begin shall we?

The Raiders are in a precarious situation. They have been projected to be over the cap by about $5.5 million to $7 million. Restructures, pay cuts and outright cuts are knocking at the door for many players. Yet there is one in particular who holds the future of the Raiders in his hands now.

Perhaps you've heard of him? His name is Carson Palmer and his decision will affect the draft of 2013. Mr. Palmer now dictates the future of the Oakland Raiders, and he will adversely affect the outlook of the 2013-2014 team.

Dennis Allen has spoken glowingly of Palmer. He has publicly announced that he wants Palmer to be the starter of the 2013-2014 season. However, as much as Allen would like to believe that whatever he says goes, it is really up to Palmer and if he wants to be an above average salary player or an Oakland Raider.

Undoubtedly, Reggie McKenzie is planning or has already asked Palmer to take a pay cut. When we find out whether Palmer has taken or rejected the pay cut that is when the draft will finally come into focus.

You see, Geno Smith being drafted hinges heavily on whether or not Palmer takes a pay cut. Should Palmer refuse a pay cut he will be cut and you can expect the draft to proceed something around these lines (Trades and compensatory picks will not be included here, I think the reader can only handle so much speculation per article)

Round 1- Geno Smith

Round 3 - DT/DE

Round 4 - CB

Round 6 - best available

Round 7a - best available

Round 7b - best available

Now let's look at if Palmer accepts the pay cut and remains the starting QB for 2013.

Round 1- DT/DE

Round 3 - CB

Round 4 - OT

Round 6 - Best available

Round 7a - best available

Round 7b - best available

As you can plainly see, scenario 2 will go more towards addressing the holes we have in the defense. That round 1 pick is pivotal in starting a solid rebuild and re-energizing the defense. Should Palmer not take a pay cut, it will set us back a season in terms of getting back to respectability and playoff contention, as we will have to have the competition between two unproven QB's.

Reggie is no fool though. He would not be arrogant enough to believe that Palmer will accept the pay cut with no hesitation. He has though of every avenue, every possibility for every player on the team. He has plans for each of them. Of course, that is his job. This could be just one of many plans he has. Whether it is or not, I could never answer for you. All I can say, this seems like a good back up plan.
