Reality Bites: Trading back in Oakland

There’s been a lot of speculation about the Raiders draft options in the 1st round this year. The consensus seems to be that the best option is to trade back and acquire more picks. There are a few who hold to the belief that we need the kind of impact player that you can only find in the top 5 picks but for most, more picks seem to be the way to go. I also agree with this philosophy of getting more picks.

Ideally, we would find a trade partner in the top 10. Arizona and Buffalo could be potential trade partners. I would be willing to trade back inside the top 10 for a 1st, 2nd and 5th. Wouldn't it be nice? We’d be active in all 7 rounds and have lot’s more opportunity to trade back and acquire more picks. There is a problem though; I don’t see a possibility to trade back in the 1st round.

The biggest question is whom a team would trade up for. The problem as I see it is that the draft is loaded with ton’s of solid talent but no true "can’t miss" talent. Outside of Joekel, Geno and maybe Milliner, and all three of these guys are stretches, there isn't anyone who a team would give up a load of picks for. Additionally, I don’t think there’s a team inside the top 5 who wouldn't be willing to trade back for more picks.

That being said I think the Raiders are stuck with the #3 pick. It’s not all bad though. We will have the opportunity to bring in a very solid player. My hope is that we address the DL or the OL with the pick and there are plenty of guys who could dramatically improve the play of each of those squads. At the end of the day the battle’s are won in the trenches.

Now, for the good news. There are still plenty of opportunities to trade back and acquire more picks in the draft and we are poised to be a prime candidate for trade backs in later rounds. As far as the 2nd round is concerned, I think the only way we are going to get back into it is by trading future picks. A 3rd and 5th or a 4th and 5th in 2014, depending on where in the 2nd, would buy a pick in the 2nd round but man that’s pricey.

The 3rd round and beyond is where I think McKenzie will have the most opportunity to load up on picks. We are poised at the top of every round except the 5th and McKenzie should be advertising the fact that the Raiders are looking to trade back for reasonable offers. Personally, I expect at least one trade back in both the 3rd and the 4th. I hope that these trades will get us back into the 5th and replenish our picks in the later rounds.

Well, that’s my take. The 1st round seems like a long shot to trade back in. The 2nd round seems too pricey for us to trade into. However, the 3rd round and beyond seem like the perfect opportunity to start wheelin’ and dealin’ picks. If we were able to turn our 7 current picks into 10+ picks I would be very satisfied with the draft. Of course, that depends on whom Reggie picks. We shall see.

P.S. This is purely speculation on my part.
