At this time of the year, very little in the NFL is as it appears. Is it possible that Reggie and CP mutually agreed that it was best for CP to move on? The Raiders are in a rebuild and need either (1) a young franchise QB, or (2) an iterim QB (at a reasonable price) until they obtain a franchise QB. The Raiders would also like to obtain something (like picks) for Carson. Carson is on the back half of his career and he would like to play with a team that potentially is a contender. If you believe him, he would even accept being a backup on a contender. And in the past he has said that he would like to be on the west coast.
What would be the best way to satisfy both the Raiders and CP? It would be to shop CP in the NFC West. Arizona has a top defense, a quality WR, and a new coach. Larry Fitzgerald will be 30 in August. The Cards could reasonably believe they are in a window where a QB and help in the offensive line could make them relevant. The Niners and the Seahawks both have young QBs and may be interested in a veteran backup QB as insurance for a Super Bowl run. In short, it is possible that any one of these three teams might have an interest in CP if he really is willing to accept a backup role and top backup compensation. The Raiders would be looking for a pick from Arizona or the Niners and maybe Matt Flynn from the Seahawks. Notice that all three NFC West franchises have been mentioned in connection with the Raiders and CP. The Raiders and CP could be workng together to satisf both of their mutual objectives.
