Years ago Al Davis would sign free agents to huge contracts. This didnt just affect the Raiders salary cap but every salary cap in the NFL. Teams would struggle to sign their draft picks or free agents because Al would drive up the market price at almost every position. The Jets woes at re-signing Darelle Revis? 100% because Al gave Asomugha an astronomical contract and Revis wanted a bigger one. There are countless stories about how Al would affect the salary of players league-wide.
But now that Reggie McKenzie is in town the players are noticing the palpable affect of Al's absence on the market. There have been less huge contracts and more and more are we seeing veterans getting signed to the league minimum for 1 year "prove it" contracts. We all know that McKenzie is a fan of this type of contract.
So while Reggie's way might be better at building a team long term, the players who signed huge contracts years ago all had Al to thank for being one of the most generous owners in the NFL.
