Lamarr Houston was one of the few bright spots on the defense last year. Houston is a smart player who can feel pressure, tough performer, Is an instinctive guy who can find the football, and he Possesses good power. Houston is 6'3 & 300 pounds typically that is the size of a defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme. Houston played defensive end his first two years in Texas before switching to defensive tackle, and he played the last three years at defensive end.
Here's what scouts had to say about Houston coming out of college "Houston is a short, thick defender that has natural power at the point of attack. He can anchor the middle of the defense when playing with good pad level but can be inconsistent in this area. He has strong hands but again doesn’t always use them effectively to shed blockers. Houston feels pad pressure well and can restrict running lanes effectively. He shows good power to push the pocket as a bull rusher but needs to expand his moves and counters to contribute more as a pass rusher. He needs to be more disciplined and anticipate the snap count as he will jump off sides too often. Houston has the size and athleticism to be an effective interior defender at the next level and will likely fit best in a 4-3 scheme."
I feel like we should move Houston inside to a defensive tackle at the 3-technique because, of his size, and he isn't a pure pass rushing defensive end. I think Houston's pass rushing would be more effective if he was at defensive tackle because, Houston bull rushing ability would help disrupt the pocket more. Houston is very versatile and can move all over the line I like him lining up at defensive end at times but his main position should be defensive tackle.
If we do plan on moving Houston inside expect us to draft a pass rusher with our 1st pick. If not then I like us getting Star Lotulelei because, he can play in multiple fronts. Dennis Allen spoke of utilizing multiple fronts on defense but that never truly came to be no thanks to the personnel he inherited in his first season.
