Raiders sign Free Agent safety Usama Young

US PRESSWIRE

The Raiders have added another free agent for the secondary. They have signed free agent safety, Usama Young.

In case you thought it was just Reggie McKenzie who was bringing in former players, Dennis Allen is reaching into his Super Bowl past and plucking members of his former secondary while he was defensive backs coach for the Saints. Today the team announced they have signed free agent safety, Usama Young.

Young was most recently with the Browns. He was cut from the team this off-season and immediately upon his release, the Raiders became a very likely destination. The Raiders released starting free safety Michael Huff on the first day of free agency and had yet to replace him.

Young is...well, young (27), he is a free safety by trade and his ties to Allen made the reunion a distinct possibility.

The 7th year safety spent the first four seasons of his career with the Saints where he was the backup behind All Pro safety, Darren Sharper. He spent the last two with the Browns. He started a career-high 11 games last season and collected 3 interceptions and 52 tackles (36 solo) from the free safety position.

The 6-0, 200 pound defensive back is listed on the Raiders roster at strong safety which means either he backs up Tyvon Branch and the team starts someone else at free safety or the Raiders start both. Or it could mean they just haven't pinned down exactly where they want to put him.
